Are you honestly saying a game with content equal to that of Tetris would stand a chance against the games today?
*Cough* Pop Cap *Cough*
But, the trick is to know your market.
Pirates is what you would call a "fun" game featuring a bit of each style and can't realy be compared to EIC.
Yeah it can. There complexity is about the same (the actual elements are different - but pitched at about the same age group I think... maybe... might have to fire Pirates! up again for the yearly memory jogger...?)

...
I'm not complaining about the naval battles I like those, but they're not enough to build a game on.

Personally, I think there is a market 'niche' here.

Nice summary.
Bit of generalization... but in a good way.

So, which do you think EIC is? Time intensive or started and dropped easily?
Or maybe a bit of each?

At this stage a bit of each, but I haven't tried the beta yet. The pace and intensity of the two aspects of the game lend themselves to either, tactical battles to MP strategic map to SP.

However, the naval battles are the main object of the game and those are easy to set up and play on a head to head match in MP. The strategic side of the game is very abstracted, from what I've read.

Come to think of it, because of its many abstractions on a strategic level, this game might be a suitable MP strategy game with the main object of engaging in fleet actions while producing the cash to maintain those fleets is made easier by the game's approach to trade. If it was as complex as Patrician, then I wouldn't see MP as a viable option.

In conclusion, if the game isn't fully MP now, I'd expect a patch to allow that in the future. Won't see the Beta till this weekend. I hope this game lives up to my expectations.

Interesting debate :D

I would say wait until the game comes out and everybody plays it before we pass judgement. It will either be like EU, CK and HOI, or it will be like EU Rome, and Diplomacy. We shall see. I own all of the Paradox games and I have learned that you got to play it to jugde it and I haven't played it yet. As long as it allows me to trade and fight sea battles I'll be happy.

Tetris, Pirates, Colonization?
Are you honestly saying a game with content equal to that of Tetris would stand a chance against the games today?

Well, you took it the wrong way but yes, games revolving around select few solid innovations still find their audiences on a daily basis. See for example what role indie devs are playing in modern business: portal was a good game based on a different perspective to the genre, so was left 4 dead.

Pirates is what you would call a "fun" game featuring a bit of each style and can't realy be compared to EIC.

Can't really be compared? You didn't elaborate why it couldn't. Because it was not being 'serious'? I think you are on a wrong lead if you think EIC is trying to be a serious simulation of the trading world of that time. It is not. But it's still not lacking because of it, except in your personal expectations.

I've never been a fan of the Amiga so I can't say much about Colonization, I'm sure it was a great game, Sid Meier's after all. But praising EIC for having more content than a 15 year old Amiga game, well.. Big achivement there..

Then you haven't followed your time. Col was remade using civ4 engine and sold as a new game not long ago. The game still works like a charm and got decent reviews.

You point out the game being balanced, well yeah of course.. Every nation is identical except for the flags and their position on the map.

Compared to the crying over ETW's dummy campaign AI in the launch, people should be well treated in EIC.

You also point out "plenty of choices", what choices? Trade.. Build.. Fight.. and since trading is basicly automated and there is barely anything to build, all that remains is fighting. I'm not complaining about the naval battles I like those, but they're not enough to build a game on.

Have you even completed any campaign?? You can't win the game with bare auto-trade and without using diplomatic negotiations.

I dont know what you guys are talking about, This game is alot like Empire:Total War, it even looks like it. Not that its a bad thing, the design of Empire is pretty solid and the purpose of this game isnt Total War, which makes it alot different in some respects.

I tired the Beta, I have to say i like this game, the tactical naval combat part seems better than Empire:Total War (I like E:TW, but the AI, at least the campaign AI, of that game is pretty dumb at launch, I need to rely on mods to have better gaming experience). EIC has a different focus, I agree that a more robust economic/trading/production model would be a plus (like those in Port Royale or Patrician). But so far, it's en enjoyable game. I do hope there would be improvement in exspansion/sequel to give us more things to do in the game. Anyway, I'm looking forward the full game.
