Prologue - One eye to the Turk and one eye to Athesia

In 1716, the Seventh Ottoman-Turkish war came to a close. Venice had emerged from that war victorious. Though everyone knew that was because both she and the Turks were beaten and bloodied and unable to fight anymore. Though Venice was beaten, bruised she was still standing. She emerged exhausted but with her territory intact.

Out of this war came the dividing issue of the century, reform and modernization. there were always reformist tendencies in Venice, however many within Venice started to realize they were falling by the wayside. They only won the war because they survived longer then the Turk did. The Venetian navy needed modernization, as did the Venetian army. What became divisive issue was political reform.

Venice broke into three large camps, Reformists, Conservatives and Moderates. The Reformist thought that the Republic itself needed to be reformed. It had ossified as an oligarchical republic and could not meet the demand of the populace. The Conservatives believed that change to the political nature of the Republic would damage the very fabric of the republic. After all has not Venice had lasted over a thousand years as a republic the conservatives cried. There is no reason to change it now they said. In between both of them were the Moderates. some of them did push for some reform though no whole scale change but otherwise like the Conservatives felt that things were fine as they were. For most of the 18th century it was the Conservatives and the Moderates that dominated the political discussion in Venice.

[native Athesians fighting Seminole in the everglades]

While Venice modernized and kept one eye to the Turk, she kept another eye west to what is now known as Athesia. As one war ended in Europe and brought Venice peace at home, abroad war would be the central talk of the 18th century. For the Plantagenet kings of the Dual Monarchy of England and France sold the Peninsula as they were tied of war with the native Seminole tribes. Unfortunately for the Venetians it just meant that they had to deal with the Seminole tribes and they soon became embroiled into a war that would not end until 1785.

The Seminole Wars were a brutal gorilla war between the Venetians and the native Seminole. It was not fought like the European wars but a Guerrilla style of war. The main fighting took place in the everglades fighting in the swamps. The old walls of Rialto and Port Dandalo were built during this time to keep out the Seminole and be prepared for an attack should they come and assault the towns.

However by the end of the century Venice had emerged victorious from the Seminole wars. The Venetians brought harsh judgement towards the native Seminole in victory. Many were sold into slavery often being sold to lands outside of the Athesian Peninsula; either for the islands of Eleuthera or elsewhere in either Arcadia or Ameriga. The rest were forced to accept Venetian customs and culture. This did however bring serenity to Athesia and the Venetian towns and cities grew and prospered.

Venice in age of Revolutions

Venice in the second half of the 18th century saw it self as a bastion of Serenity and Peace while the rest of Europe engaged in bloody war. Venice kept neutral, armed neutrality that is. This was perhaps the main thing that all factions in Venice agreed on be they reformers or conservatives. This had the major benefit for the republic of boosting the economy after it had come to a halt due to the previous war with the Turk and modernization programs. While the Europeans fought over the throne of England-France, the trade in Venice prospered.

Domestically there was conflict between reformist and conservatives as always. In 1784 the reformist candidate Andrea Memmo was elected Doge. This did give great hope to reformists and the reformists in the republic to push for reforms and modernization. Of course the Conservatives fought back tooth and nail against every reform.

The most famous of the laws passed under Memmo's Reign was the emancipation of the Jews. While it did not give full rights for the Jewish people in the republic. It did however ease up many of the old burduns upon them and help to integrate them more into Venetian society.

[German Revolutionaries executing nobles via the Guillotine in 1792]

However as the 18th century started to come to a close, events in Italy and the Holy Roman Empire would light the world on fire in bloody war. The First came from the German states of the Holy Roman Empire. The Venetians at first largely ignored the revolution. In fact some in venice, particularly among the reformist faction, actually liked the revolution and was in support of it.

However, they changed their tune in 1792 when the German revolutionaries began to execute aristocrats via the guillotine. Venice's structure as of an oligarchical republic, and such a slaughter of the nobility was abhorrent to the republic. Even Andrea Memmo the reformist doge was shocked by the German revolutionaries and openly condemned their activity.

The republic breathed a sigh of relief when the German revolutionaries were defeated at the battle of Leipzig. However, when shortly later the Great German War began when Scandinavia and Bohemia went to war, Venice kept a close eye on the Situation. They had no desire to be dragged into a war in the north. Particularly a war that they had no desire to join.

[Clashes between Revolutionaries and anti-revolutionaries during the Italian Revolutionary War in Bologna.]

However in 1807, conflict would come to the Serene republic. In the Italian principality Florence underwent its own revolution, transforming it self into the Etrurian Republic. Venice had no desire to go to war, but Venice also desired to remain intact and not fall victim to the chaos. Moreover there was a practical and pragmatic reason for joining. The Eturians were seeking to unify all of Italy and were turning age old monarchies into revolutionary republics. Venice had no desire to see that happen to herself and thus joined with the Aragonese in combating the revolutionaries.

Venice's army was sent to fight and its navy which had been modernized with friggets and manowars would prove a valuable addition for the coalition forces in the Italian Revolutionary war. The armies of Venice fought in many of the engagements of the conflict. Proving a useful force against the tide of revolutionary fervor sweeping europe.

Venice though was a lukewarm participant in the wars. Where others wanted to put the house of Valois-Medici back on the throne. Venice was mainly fighting to keep itself free from foreign influence, particularly of the Eturians. They did not care if the republic of Etruria survived or not. Venice was putting her own interests first as she always did and was happy when the conflict came to a close in 1814.

[Venetian Marines landing in Athesia]

While Venice was fighting in Europe, in 1804 an uprising happened in Athesia. A number of Athesians had seen the independence of Vinland and The seven republics and started to agitate for their own independent republic. They had little help from the motherland and they had done much of the major fighting in the Seminole Wars.

Notably, the Athesian politician Antonio Capello was the main supporter and advocate for Athesian Independence. He famously raised a new flag for Athesia over the city hall in Rialto. Two stripes of blue with a yellow stripe in the middle and yellow star in the upper left. There was greet cheer and acclaim at this during the moment.

However Venice had no desire to see its colonies gone, and the Kingdom of Plantagenia had no desire to see an independent republic on its southern borders. Thus began the Athesian revolt of 1804. Of course, not everyone in Athesia or Eleuthera supported Capello and his plans for an independent Athesia. It is telling that the Venetian Marines that Landed on the Peninsula were drawn not from Venice proper but Eleuthera and Port Dandalo.

This revolt was a short lived one. But it did ask the question of where Athesia should go. Many had no desire to join in the revolt, but many others did. The revolt was a failure but to many that supported it, the idea of an independent Athesia did not die but only get set back.

The reformists are not radical enough! But for the time being I guess I will have to be satisfied. Defeating Etruria did at least preserve the republic.

One thing I'm curious on though, is if there are any notable differences in policies between the conservatives and reformists concerning Athesia. Are both factions opposed to more autonomy?

Fallschwertmaschine it is :p

Otherwise a good summary of the early 1800's. Next is the opportunism of the Ottoman Civil War I guess :p
Yup next comes the Ottoman Civil war. After that I want to touch on the Politics of Venice to give more information on just how the Venetian Republic is organized and the politics of 1836.

and I didn't know that the Guillotine had a different name here. :p

:p

Yea, there are differences between the Reformists and Conservatives regarding Athesia. I will explain that more when I get to the Venetian Politics section. :)

Not enough guillotine... or Fallschwertmaschine :p
Aristocrats regardless if they are monarchists or republicans don't like angry mobs executing them :p

It makes sense though, as it was named after Guillotin, and in this timeline I believe a German invented it.

I think there was a discussion about this in Unione,Forza and all the different names that were invented for it :p
Ooh, I will have to take a look at that. Perhaps there should be a thread or a post in the main Divergences on name changes from this timeline?

I don't think there are a lot of them unless you also think of places. Then the list would be long indeed.
Also what should be called the Christian Socialist Party of Venetia you wanted ? Only lacks that one at the moment.

well not places but things; also the invention names should be updated IMO, but that is for another thread.

As for the Christian-Socialist party, I was assuming that would be the Social-Liberal party, unless there is a separate ideology for christian-democracy.

Don't really see what you mean here but if you want explain it on the DVG thread

I always put Christian-Socialists as a Socialist PArty until now since it's tied with Liberation theology.

The not so Sublime Porte

The Ottoman Empire, The Sublime Porte had stayed out of European Affairs for the most part in the 18th century. Since the defeat of the 7th Ottoman-Venetian War, the Turks had slowly but steadily modernized. In addition, at the turn of the 19th century, the Ottomans did not suffer any major upheavals. There was a fear in Venice as they prepared to march into the Italian Revolution War, that the Turk might attack them.

This was not to be. Though the empire looked to outsiders as stable and a highly dangerous threat, the increasing modernization had alienated many though it had just as many supporters. Selim III was a reformer and wanted to modernize the empire. He saw Europe erupt into chaos and knew that if he could just modernize the empire, then he could achieve dominance over them. However, this did not happen. He gave the order to replace the Janissary with a modern professional army.

The Janissaries did not take this lightly. Though they were a slave force, they held a great deal of influence and power in the Ottoman Court and this hurt their power and Influence. in 1807 they orchestrated a palace coup, killing Selim the 3rd and installing his cousin, Mustafa IV, as Sultan of the Ottoman Empire. However the reformers in the empire which had started to see progress being made did not take this lightly. Rallying behind Suleiman II, they began the Ottoman Civil War.

[A painting of the Duke of Nitra(later King of Hungary) declaring that Hungary is independent that hangs in Budapest]

The civil war proved futile ground for Independence movements in the rest of the empire. In Hungary the duke of Nitra declared independence almost as soon as the civil war began in 1807. The Hungarians rallied behind the duke and took fight to the Turk. Soon enough the duke was proclaimed King of Hungary.

It comes to no surprise that as the Turkish forces were focusing on the civil war, that the Hungarian forces were able to more easily liberate the Kingdom of Hungary. Both sides in the Turkish civil war used the Hungarians as propaganda in their own fight for the throne as each blamed the other. though by 1810 Hungary's war for Independence was largely over as turkey accepted their Independence in order to focus more on fighting the civil war.

This caused the Empire of Osmani to erupt into even more flame. The Croatians and Bosnians decided that this was there time to revolt and in 1810, they engaged in a war for Independence. Soon enough the lands were united under the kingdom of Illyria. In the East, Iraq was declared independent by Faisal Jalili who quickly won support from the people of his region. It helped that Faisal had managed to sway the ottoman soldiers in Iraq to his side. By 1814 Faisal had signed an Armistice with the Ottomans. A year later the same occurred in Illyria bringing for the time being an end to the conflict. This just left Mustafa and Suleiman to fight over the throne.

In 1821 Suleiman was rose to the throne and became known as Suleiman the 2nd. He quickly went about implementing his reforms and modernizing the army. The new Ottoman army proved its might over the Jannisaries in 1825 crushing them. This should have ended the conflict, but it was not to be.

[A painting of the Decisive battle of Narovinio, where the combined Aragonese/Venetian/Greek forces triumphed over the Ottoman Turks at Sea.]

The Venetians along with the Aragonese met with Konstantinos Zimisces who had fought in many of the independence revolts in Arcadia and Ameriga. The Venetians backed Zimisces and the Greeks in their fight for independence. Thus began the Greek war for Independence in 1825. After five years of planning, the Venetians and the Aragonese involved themselves in 1830.

The Venetians saw this as a chance to humiliate the Turks. More over, an independent Greece or a Greece under their protection would be a major blow to the power of the Ottoman Empire. The Aragonese on the other hand while seeing the same thing, also saw it as a chance to cut in on the Venetians which had long dominated the Eastern Mediterranean. Though for the time being they both cooperated against the Ottomans.

The Aragonese helped to create the Kingdom of Macedonia, by installing a younger son of the House of Aragon as King Alexander the 1st of Macedonia. The Venetians for their part made Greece as a protectrate under their protection. Both Aragon and Venice cooperated to create an Independent Albania while vying over influence in the new kingdom.

By 1833 the Venetians had forced the Turks to sign a Truce with Venice. Venice was to be recognized as the protector of Greece. This Truce was badly needed by the Ottomans which had to deal with now not just the Albanians and the Macedonians but Mustafa the 4th who rose up against Suleiman the 2nd.

As Mustafa the 4th whom escaped into hiding when Suleiman was proclaimed emperor rallied his forces and pointed to the European involvement as for why the reforms do not work. This reignited the civil war again as Suleiman and Mustafa fought for the control of the empire yet again. Mustafa for his part vowed to retake all the land that had been lost due to the civil wars.

It is of course no surprise that this brought even further revolts in the Ottoman empire, particularly in Egypt and in Syria and the Kurdish region. The Macedonians and the Albanians of course continue their fights for Independence against the Ottoman Turks. In thirty years, the Ottoman Empire went from being one of the most powerful empires in Europe and poised to dominate it to a broken shell of itself wracked with internal and external problems.
