Preface

The goal of this AAR is to shed a somewhat historical light onto the importance of the lesser nations in WW2. I specifically chose Mexico because of the exceptional skill that was shown by their men that served in that war. The Mexican Navy was a vital ally to have around for big brother America in the north, and the Mexican Air Force served with dignity and honor in the Pacific. Over 200 Mexican planes and personnel would join Americans in liberating the Philippines. The 201st Mexican Air Squadron, nicknamed the "Aztec Eagles", would only suffer 5 casualties while flying many successful missions.

While it is important to note that this AAR obviously won't be completely historical, I will try to keep many squadron and ship names the same. The major difference here is that I will also send troops to the Pacific to participate in the island hopping techniques along with the USA. I will also probably station troops in Australia to strike around Singapore if Japan were to take it. One last important note, I love history and I am an Economist by profession. If I get too dry about economic analysis of the state at the beginning, please let me know, though I do think some of it is integral to the story when talking about buildup. This is my first AAR and I'm quite nervous about it, so with that said, I'll post some of the game photos tomorrow. From there the story will begin.

Chapter One - Reconstrucción de la Nación (Rebuilding the Nation)

Mexico in 1936 was, like the rest of the world, striving for answers that would lead them out of the stifling grip of the Great Depression. President Lázaro Cárdenas after his election in 1934, has carefully been searching for avenues from which he could find those answers. To the north, America, who is our biggest trading partner had been implementing a series of policies and economic reforms under the watchful eye of President Franklin Roosevelt known to the American people as "The New Deal". Small but noticeable gains had been made after the "Deal" was implemented, though it turns out it was incredibly unpopular. President Roosevelt did not last long enough in office for the American people to realize the benefits of these reforms, and was replaced by the ever defiant General Douglas MacArthur.

Out with the old, in with the new

President Cardenas was determined to reform the old Mexico that was run by dictators parading as Presidents. To win the favor of the Mexican people, the first thing he did upon his election was cut his Presidential salary in half. His reasons for doing so remain private, but it was looked upon very favorably by the people. Cardenas wished to combat his image as the old revolutionary General that he was, and implement policies that would help the common people of the Mexican Republic.

Mexico could not afford Isolationist ideology anymore

An economic philosopher by the name of Keynes had introduced some theories about why governments needed to involve themselves into their nations economies or the Depression would just continue to be self perpetuating. The economies of nations run mostly on the consumption of goods by their respective people, but with unemployment so high, the people did not have enough money to sustain growth. The idea would be that governments could "fill the gap" by increasing their own spending until industry picked up and unemployment reached a desirable level.

This is where Cardenas stepped in and started a six year plan that would implement a massive overhaul of the Mexican economy. In order to insure against further loss of employment, he nationalized key industries such as oil and returned large tracts of land to poor individuals in order for them to be able to develop it. The key parts of this plan included again, the giving of land to poor individuals to insure that it did not get purchased by corporations, a large education initiative to provide an educated workforce that would provide benefits far into the future, and the creation of unions in order to combat low pay and unemployment.

Education was seen as important tool to increase our research power

These reforms proved to be very popular in Mexico, and Cardenas benefited from increased popularity and fame. The question now being posed to the Mexican people... was how much they wanted to come out their isolationist policies and join the world stage.

A question for folks that have done previous AAR's... I would like to make the photos in my story bigger, so the audience does not have to click on them to enlarge them. Any suggestions so as to remedy this problem would be much appreciated. I'm good with math, but not with computers, thanks.

Don't attach your pictures as thumbnails. Instead, find a picture hosting site, upload your pictures there, then use IMG tags to display them here. The resulting pictures will be larger than what you see in your post. Photobucket and ImageShack are two free sites I use, and they're no-fuss sites that are easy to use. I'm sure there are others out there, but those are the two I use. Photobucket has a bandwidth limit, so if your AAR is popular and too many people view the pictures they can cut you off until the start of the next month. ImageShack doesn't have such limits, but depending on how you link to the pictures you upload there people viewing the enlarged pictures can be flooded with ads. Regardless of what you do, the forum itself scales your images to a certain size, which is why you may want to make your pictures be click-able.

What he said.
In addition, what images I have that are more than 800 pixels wide get compressed down to that width when displayed on the forum. I have not noticed a length limit though.

As an example, do a 'reply with quote' on this post to see what I pasted in to get the following image:

This is a straight paste from the 'Links to Share your Images' page on Imageshack.

Interesting AAR idea by the way, I look forward to the rest of the series.

"La guerra en invierno!"

I guess I shouldn't do many puns, especially in a language that I suck so badly in...

I agree with both Brom and bugwar, as thumbnails are the biggest enemy of the reader, at least in the graphics department of the AAR ;)

Thank you sir, I've went back and fixed the old post.

I've fixed the previous post with photobucket, I'll Imageshack to see which one works better for me, thanks. Glad you are interested in the idea. I like playing as small nations to see just how much I can really do in the context of history.

I'm a little confused on why a Rooseveltcentric America at that time would oust a, for all intents and purposes, popular president and replace him with the commander of the Philippine forces? Is it just your personal beliefs or is it just to spice up the AAR? However, I like what you are doing so far playing as a minor allied nation. Keep up the good work!

As far as that move was concerned, I was just playing with what the game randomly decided. I was in the middle of building up some forces and clicked over to America and noticed that Roosevelt had been replaced. Not sure why it happened! What is really amusing about it is that in the 1940 election, MacArthur lost and went right back to commanding the Philippine forces.

Dolor de Crecimiento - Growing Pains

The spring of 1936 dawned upon a Mexico that was still mulling over the new policies that had been implemented by President Cardenas. Growth was slow and predictably so. The Mexican government was happy to let the people think on those things, while it attempted to address its own problems. The members on the cabinet for Cardenas had to be reevaluated for their positions as a top to bottom cleansing was occurring. The revolutions of the last fifty odd years were still fresh in the minds of the Mexican government. No one could be trusted and corruption was completely out of hand. These situations had to be dealt with delicately, or more rebellion would certainly be in store for the republic. A scapegoat was needed, an event that would warrant a shakeup of the leaders that were in power.

The nation definitely needed some new leadership

People from the old guard still held too much power, as Cardenas who was a revolutionary himself knew all too well. The policies that were implemented by him showed a clear diversion from his previous ideology, and the rest of the government had to follow. A robust Central Intelligence program was created by Cardenas in order to solidify domestic policies without the intervention of foreign governments having influence. The new intelligence wing had but one objective in the early days of its creation, find those who wished to use their power in the government for undesirable activities, and bring those activities into the light.

The agency via an "expert reporter" captures its first prize

While the new intelligence agency was working towards finding corruption and boosting national unity, the military was undergoing its own scrutiny. The Mexican army was incredibly small, almost to the point of irrelevancy, even though manpower was quite high. The navy was literally nonexistent and the air force consisted of a single squadron of fighters that should have been retired before Cardenas was elected. A period of unprecedented buildup in the military was about to begin, but the moment to begin had to be selected at just the right time. Rumors of the great global powers and their ambitions started to stir, and Hitler, the self proclaimed Fuhrer of Germany started to give particularly fiery speeches about the plight of the German people. Granted the inflation that was present in the Germany economy was too much to bear for any state, so some of this talk was to be expected from leaders to motivate their respective peoples. Cardenas himself had given a few speeches that were quite passionate when he was trying to pass some of the more controversial policies of his economic plan, but there was a different air around Hitler, for better or worse. The option for Cardenas to initiate the buildup of the military happened in early May-August 1936....

The Mexican people were all too familiar with revolutions

The Spanish state had devolved into a realm of chaos. This was a blessing and a curse for Cardenas and the government. The blessing of this event was that the Mexican people were completely aware of the kind of revolution that was happening in Spain right now, and they would give their full support for Mexican intervention in the conflict. The curse is that Cardenas was dear friends with leaders of what was now called "Republican" Spain. Mexico had to decide whether it wanted to continue to sit on the sidelines of global events, or establish itself as a leader in the coming years. In response to this predicament, the first move of Mexico was to embargo Nationalist Spain, and open all trade routes possible to our besieged Republican brothers. While it was never openly said, it was a well known fact that Hitler's Germany was supplying the Socialist movement in Northern Spain. This fact would certainly lead to increased tensions between the two countries in the following years. Cardenas used these events as a catalyst for some new laws to be implemented.

It only took a month after the Spanish conflict began to initiate new wartime laws

With the news laws recruitment of new troops and the building of the navy would begin in earnest. The winds of the world were shifting, and Cardenas was adamant that Mexico be ready for whatever that might mean...

As America saved Britain, so to must Mexico save Spain! Adelante!

Adelante, rápidamente!

El Estado de la Nacion - The State of the Nation

The summer of 1936 went by in a blur as Mexico was now utilizing it's full economic potential in an effort to aid our republican brothers in Spain. Besides the unprecedented buildup, the only notable event that occurred for the nation would have been the Olympics in July and August. Bronze medals were won in basketball, boxing and polo.
Our Olympic winners provided some relief from the news in Spain, and were a huge source of national pride

While this was exceptional news for the people (especially the polo team beating heavily favored Hungary), the government was focused on the ever increasing spy network and the build up of the military forces. Education had been a top priority of the government for a few years now, but the fruits of that labor would have to wait. For now, technology research was focused on our infantry divisions and the Armada. Close ties with the Americans have paid off in this area, as they have been kind enough to send some of their commanders to train a new wing of the military, Infanteria de Marina, or the equivalent of the US Marine Corps. Naval presence was viewed with an ever increasing importance as Mexico sought to become economically and militarily viable.

(Left) Spies were sent to friends and foes alike in attempt to pry away valuable intelligence for technological research, (Middle) A parade in Mexico city of a Mexican Cavalry unit before they are dismantled and reassigned, (Right) The new Infanteria de Marina are seen here doing amphibious landing exercises in Veracruz

With recruitment of military personnel and the production of Mexico's first naval vessels under full swing, 1936 drew to a close. With the coming of the new year, the republic had several things from the past year to reflect on. The first and most important was the belligerent actions of Japan in the Manchurian provinces of China, and most recently the conquest of Ethiopia by the Italians. These countries were part of the major powers in the world, and their actions could very well shape its future. Mexico's plans to counteract the perceived threat from these countries included at the very least increasing the number of Infanteria divisions from 4 divisions of 3 brigades to at least 15 active divisions of 3 Inf/1 Art, 3 divisions of Marines, and a few tank brigades (thanks to the Americans) initially in the event that a conflict would involve our attention immediately.

Our military had a long way to go to reach initial goals.

The entire year of 1937 was spent putting technology to use in the form of upgrades, continuing recruitment and production, and slowly but surely watching the supported Republican Spain annihilate the revolting Nationalists. Spies in the Nationalist occupied territory were informing us of lowering morale and exceptional encirclement tactics that the Republican generals were using in order to end battles quickly.

After a year of fighting, the Nationalists only held onto one major Spanish city

The events unfolding would be watched closely, as the power of our spy network was always growing.

Sorry for the brief update folks. I've played ahead a little and with the war starting soon the thread should get a bit more interesting.

Nice!

I'm only thinking - are you just thinking of helping the US or are your going to make a empire of your own? Any way, good luck!

This is some very good stuff. The story fits together really well, you approach events as if they really happened and give proper explanations for their happening. That, and your brief explanation of Keynesian economics was hilarious ;)

Well the plan is to help the US in a much more forceful way than Mexico originally did in the war. I fully intend to carve out some territory from my enemies when the time comes. Not sure how or where it will happen.

Glad you are enjoying it so far, I've read your Fall Blau AAR and found it quite exceptional.
Hmm, I'm curious, did you get much tech with those spies?
Not much initially, but 1937 was very kind to me, especially on the naval side of things.

I have to say, even if I'm not what you'd call a patriot, as a Mexican I'm a bit pumped about this particular AAR. It's really cool! :D

I subscribed, of course. Also, if you need names for your armies just let me know. :D

Excellent :), I am on an indirect campaign to raise awareness about the help that the Allies received from a lot of the smaller countries. Mexico isn't actually a bad country to play as in this game either if you direct your research correctly. It has pretty high manpower for a minor power, so it has the potential to take over some area. With regards to the offer of help for army names, I could always use some navy names. Also you could check my Spanish as well. I speak English (obviously) and Chinese fluently, but my Spanish is rusty.

A side note to other readers or followers, I am on a visit to China working on improving my 中文和汉字 skills. As you may know, the internet is sketchy here, but I intend to post an update while i'm here. I have all the photos and an idea that needs refining. Hope all are having a great time around the holidays that just past.
