Over the last month I have become once again very immersed in my HOI3 tfh world.
I absolutely love this game! The HOI3 series is without question the best developed and supported game I play. Kudos to all responsible in working toward this tremendous result! I receive much satisfaction and fulfillment in my, perhaps quirky, personal attraction to complicated detail, WWII history, war in general, and the ability to emulate a general or national leader.
I have been playing since the original HOI. I have purchased every upgrade and most DLC. I will most likely continue to do so. I am not extremely eager in anticipation of HOI 4. That is only because a learning curve will be required. This game has so many features and detailed aspects that there is a significant amount of learning time involved to master a major overhaul. I still have much more I have not learned about HOI3 than I have learned. But in the converse sense, the reality that so many new features and significantly improved fundamental aspects of the game are overhauled in such an extensive manner is tremendous! I know that Paradox will not just make minor aesthetic tweaks to a largely unchanged engine and interface rolled out as a "major upgrade".
I have no doubt there will be many well thought out huge differences between HOI4 and HOI3. I also anticipate that every one of these changes has been envisioned, designed, and developed for my satisfaction based on user feedback, as well as a more intimately informed vision of what I'd probably like, which I, myself, have not yet begun to ponder.
Most game developers are seeking the path of minimal effort offering maximum revenue. This is the reason I have eventually moved away from several previously loved simulation game series. The Paradox approach is the reason I will remain a die hard devoted loyal fan of the HOI series! I will blindly purchase every upgrade, DLC, or other offering, because the quality of such enhancements have never been deficient.
If I had 3 times as many hours in the day, I would be able to immerse myself in Victoria and Europa Universalis, which have proven to been created in similar high quality fashion.
HOI offers features, complexity, detail, easy to use high-level summary interface, modability, openness of game internals, and user-developer interaction, which is at least ten times more substantial than any other game I have played. Civilization V and OOTP Baseball uniquely offer a similar approach, but come no where near the overall substance Paradox has created!
I remember stumbling around, then abandoning the original HOI game a few times. Because I was not able to become quickly as familiar and comfortable as the hex-based predecessors. However, once I learned to crawl in the Paradox world, I never looked back to those substandard game systems.
I have created several mods for HOI3 tfh in the last few weeks. What a wonderful modding opportunity which seems to continually evolve with well designed improvements! The depth and breadth of moddability is truly astonishing!
In the past few days I have been running case studies, comparing alternate approaches to German 1936 buildup to war. The wonderfully detailed control over the huge number of message settings is extremely helpful. The ability to tweak and save message setting files, in itself is just plain super! I have the ability to plunge forward for years without being bothered by any messages. Or I can meander through a fantasy word, pausing with each subtly important message presented. As I complete each individual case in my studies, I began gathering the data from which to base my comparisons. The amount of detailed information which is both significant to me and readily available for my viewing is a treat! I can see very detailed information about each individual brigade, which is also carried up to theater and strategic command. These are appropriately tied and balanced relative to technology, diplomacy, politics, economy, and other aspects important and relevant in real life operations of what the game simulates.
The amount of information available in the forums, which frequently includes significant interaction by developers, is extremely helpful.
I could write volumes of praise. But I'd rather go play the game. And I'd prefer you developers get back to work on the next generation of a superb product. Thank-you very much! The results of your efforts are greatly appreciated! Kudos!
I honestly wish the entire software and application development industry would follow the example of Paradox. It may be just a game. But the approach to design, development, and support is unparalleled.
