The balkans should just be gypsy culture and this way everybody would be pleased.

As it looks right now, it will happen in 50 years. The new name for the Balkans will be West Hindustan. I wonder whether they'll still make grand strategy games in North Chad.

I kind of agree on the Netherlands one, but I've never heard anyone complain about Asia. In fact, if anything Asia is the place most people are requesting more content for.

Do actually any maps from the area EU4's based on exist that show the cultural/ethnic makeup of the region? Because I was somewhat surprised to see that Skopje - which seems to make up all of today's Republic of Macedonia - is Serbian and not Bulgarian.
Because in 1444 it was culturally closer to Serbia and even today it is culturally closer to the southern Serbs then to Bulgarians.
And we cant pinpoint when Bulgarian culture even became a thing as Bulgarian history goes that a Turkish tribe Bulgars lead some Slavic tribes to Balkan. So Bulgarian culture formed much later after their arrival. Slavic population in modern Macedonia didnt consist only of those Slavs that came with Bulgars but also of Serbs, and other Slavic tribes that came independently.
And through history control of that territory switched between so many that it is impossible to pin it to only one side.

But before and after the Ottoman conquest modern Macedonian region was part of Serbian Empire and ruled by Serbian nobility, and that justifies why in EU4 it has Serbian culture.

Actual linguistic-culture based maps didn't come up until 19th century. But the data of what people who spoke which language lived in a particular area, at least in almost all of Asia, North Africa and Europe, are all recorded by text. Manuscripts are available everywhere.

In some societies like China or India and their spheres, cultural changes slowed down and almost stopped taking place in the game timeframe and were mostly same as later eras when Europeans (particularly British, French and Germans) created a very detailed analysis and made those detailed maps that are now used as sources everywhere, so it is safe to assume that most places here had the same culture as the one recorded much later.

Not sure about Balkans though. That area is a big mix of various Slavic and non-Slavic cultures, I have little knowledge of them (except for Greeks), and any discussion about who should be where in the Balkans is one big flame bait to the thread. :p

Hopefully, that doesn't happen. The cultural makeup in EU4 should be based on history, not on some absurd fantasy.

There are Macedonian nationalists? On this very forum?

Man, some people are clueless as to the notion of nationalism and independence of culture. When their state and it's name itself is a fake joke, how do people even feel the nationalism for 'Macedonia'?

I have to agree - as long as they don't try to project that identity back to times when it didn't exist, of course. If you decide to create a new identity, you have to cope with the fact that it is, in fact, new.

I have to agree - as long as they don't try to project that identity back to times when it didn't exist, of course. If you decide to create a new identity, you have to cope with the fact that it is, in fact, new.
well they cant deal with the fact that its new thats why my tax money is being spent on some stupid statues to make it look like it was the old macedonia...anyway thats another topic which i dont care to discuss here....my only minor issue which i dont care alot about that either is that albanian falls in slavic culture as albanian its wierd since we almost always at war with them...but i understand that a small province dont matter much in eyes of devs (However since they gave them unique ideas...one text line in cultures wouldnt have hurt)

Because a group of people CHOOSE to feel like "Macedonian" and create THEIR own identity by that name.

Who are you to deny them that?

As @WeissRaben said, it is no problem if they are not linking themselves to the actual Greek Macedonia and the long history of the region. That way they are creating en entirely new identity - a new, Slavic Macedonia.

But sadly, they aren't doing that. They outright claim to be successors of Alexander, and they try to pass themselves off as real Macedonians, and try to impose this retarded false belief everywhere despite knowing they have nothing in relation to real Macedonia. And which is why these 'Macedonian' people and their history (of which they have none), their nation, their state and everything else related to them is a rude, fake joke.

Cultures have been deliberately consolidated into groups since the game was released. It buffs places like Navarra and Albania if they can have some same-culture group cultures to expand into.

Why do you care what they claim? You know that they arent ancient Macedonians, i know it, whole worlds knows it. So let them act out their little nationalism fantasy, it doesnt hurt anyone.

I mean its not like what they are doing is unique. Look at Montenegro. 100 years ago they were Serbs, 50 years ago they were Yugoslavians, and today they are "Montenegrins". They even made a new alphabet, basically took Serbian Cyrillic, added 2 new letters, and made it their own.

I observe it with amusement, i dont try to deny them their thing if it makes them happy.
