GENERAL ISSUES

  1. Achievements are not working!
Achievements are only available in Ironman games. Also you cannot have used the Ruler Designer on this game.

  2. Cannot run Ironman mode
    - must have the default checksum, no mods that alter the checksum are allowed
    - Steam Client must be running and in online mode
    - must enable Steam Cloud Sync in your Steam client - both overall and for this game in particular.

  3. If you get black flags or shields:
Go to Documents/Paradox Interactive/Crusader Kings II. In there, delete the folder called "gfx". Note that this is NOT the /gfx/ folder under Steam/SteamApps/common/CK2 .
Now restart your game, it will recreate that folder and fix the problem.

  4. Large screen, high resolution, fonts are too small
The fonts in the game do not scale at all. Either reduce the resolution as needed, or try one of the font mods available in the Steam Workshop.

  5. I subscribe to mods in the Steam Workshop but they never download
Enable Steam Cloud Sync in your Steam client - both overall and for this game in particular.

  6. Localisation text has numerous errors in the Steam Polish edition, even when played in English
    http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum...ot-working&p=15564273&viewfull=1#post15564273
To fix right-click on the game in Steam, Properties, Language, and set to English, not Polish (or if English already, set to Polish - wait for update - then set to English again) - wait for Steam to download the new localisations. Note this is not the same as changing the language within the game.
UPDATE: temporary fix provided by Cenega is attached to this post.

WINDOWS-SPECIFIC ISSUES

The published specs for the game are:
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 or ATI Radeon X1900, 512mb graphics memory required

  1. Launcher gets stuck in bottom-right corner of screen, can't start game
Probably you have your Windows fonts set to 150%, which makes the launcher's Play button go off the screen. Either set them to 125%
    OR
right-click on ck2game.exe and and select "Properties". Click on the "Compatibility" tab, and under "Settings", check the box next to "Disable display scaling on high DPI settings".

  2. I get weird map graphics (fog of war/terra incognita/terrain textures)
    View attachment 87735
    • Update your video driver - especially Intel ones older than 2013, which are notorious for this problem. Get them from the update site of your laptop vendor or Intel itself; do not bother with the Windows driver update check or the Steam one, they are worthless.
    • It is quite common that a laptop has two graphics cards. In some cases the drivers fails to determine the correct card to be used and the game ends up using the one with low performance. Please make sure that you set your settings (check your graphics control panel) to use the graphics card with the best performance.

Sometimes it helps to remove your entire settings.txt after updating drivers/changing to use of the correct graphics card.
    • Navigate to and open "Documents\Paradox Interactive\Crusader Kings II\settings.txt"
      Change "force_pow2_textures=" to no.

  3. Whenever I start the game in fullscreen I get a black screen and after a few seconds the game crashes
Navigate to and open "Documents\Paradox Interactive\Crusader Kings II\settings.txt"
Locate "refreshRate=0" and make sure it is set to an refresh rate your monitor supports (60 Hz is common)
    Ex. refreshRate = 60

  4. Failed to start game (missing executable)
Run a Verify in Steam, then restart Steam. Make sure ck2game.exe is whitelisted in your anti-virus app (Comodo in particular)

  5. Error message: [MSVCP100.dll (or similar) is missing.
    Solution: install this: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=5555 then
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8328

  6. Error message: d3dx9_41.dll (or similar) is missing.
    Solution: install this: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8109
The difference between error messages for 3 and 4 is that the latter usually contains d3dx somewhere.

This fix can also be required even when this error message is not shown by Windows (this particularly seems to happen in Win8). Check for d3dx9_41.dll and d3dx9_43.dll in your c:\windows\system32\ directory. The symptom is that the Launcher lists no DLCs or Mods, and if you hit Play the game does not start. Can often be the case after installing the game on a new machine or after a Windows re-install.

  7. The game does not start:
Right click steamapps/common/Crusader Kings II/ck2game.exe, set compatibility to run in 640 X 480, then start from this .exe. Adjust your resolution through the in-game options and exit the game. Remove the check from 640 X 480 box and start the game from steam library.

  8. To stop the 'installing for the first time, c++ etc' messages
Get rid of the 'installscript.vdf' file in your 'Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\common\Crusader Kings II' folder.

  9. Countries show as Zxx instead of the actual names
    - Find the file "converted_countries_l_english.yml" in C:\Users\<username>\Documents\Paradox Interactive\Crusader Kings II\eu4_export\mod\<savegame>\localisation
    - Open it with Notepad++ and "save as", and make sure it is using UTF-8 encoding

  10. Comodo anti-virus software falsely identifies and quarantines ck2.exe (the main game file) as infected.
If ck2game.exe is not present in the CK2 directory this is the problem, you will get a JIT (Just-in-time) error as seen in this thread. You will have to rescue ck2game.exe from quarantine back to where it belongs, and flag it with Comodo as trusted Files.

  11. Avast! anti-virus software has been known to cause miscellaneous crashes and other such issues.
The solution is to create specific exceptions in Avast! for ck2game.exe, and importantly the whole Documents/CK2 folder so that writes to it are unimpeded.

LINUX-SPECIFIC ISSUES

The published specs for the game are:
ATI Radeon HD 6750 / NVIDIA GeForce 320 / NVIDIA GeForce 9600 or higher, 1024MB graphics memory required

  1. Countries show as Zxx instead of the actual names
    - Go to your ck2 directory: cd $HOME/Documents/Paradox Interactive/Crusader Kings II/eu4_export
    - Got to mod/<your-save-name>/localisation dir: cd mod/<your-save-name>/localisation
    - To convert run: for file in *.yml; do iconv -t UTF8 -o ${file}.utf8 $file; mv ${file}.utf8 $file; done

  2. No sound in the Linux version
    http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/showthread.php?725495-Linux-No-sound-when-launching-via-Steam

  3. Display Tearing fixed

  4. How to use alternative graphics card on Linux
    http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum...How-to-use-alternative-graphics-card-on-Linux

  5. Strange black/grey graphical artifacts on the map
Especially towards the top-left corner. This is a long-standing unfixed bug, just disable Shadows in the game's visual settings.

  6. Alt-tab out of the game then back in, the resolution and interface are broken
This is a bug that has not been fixed for several versions, unfortunately. The easy workaround is to bypass the launcher; in Steam-properties-set launch options paste in

    -skiplauncher

  7. Initial menu animation does not work, no access to game
The buttons panel does not slide up from the bottom of the screen unless you alt-tab in and out repeatedly, or drag the game window around. With the FXAA setting enabled the menu does not appear automatically. To solve it override the game setting unchecking the "Enable FXAA" field and putting the antialiasing at 4x . It is worth to make a specific profile for the game to automatically use this setting once you play.https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/foru...-menu-intro-issue-totally-disappeared.872254/
  8. CFileException crash on new Linux versions (Debian, openSuSE, possibly Ubuntu 16.04)
Install the game on an ext4 partition, not a file system with 64-bit iNodes.

MAC-SPECIFIC ISSUES

The published specs for the game are:
ATI Radeon HD 6750 / NVIDIA GeForce 320 / NVIDIA GeForce 9600 or higher, 1024MB graphics memory required

  1. Borderless mode, isn't.
In Borderless mode the top bar of the OS X window still displays. This is a long-standing bug for which there is no current fix or workaround, sorry.

  2. Strange black/grey graphical artifacts on the map
Especially towards the top-left corner. This is a long-standing unfixed bug, just disable Shadows in the game's visual settings.
