Conquering divisions vanishing during annexation

Situation: I'm playing the USSR, and the Axis powers declare war on the Comintern in 1940. In addition to the usual suspects, Latvia has joined the fascist team, and the Germans and the Spaniards are using its territory to conduct bombing raids to Mother Russia. Naturally, I want to take Latvia out, and as it is mainly lowlands, I go in with two groups of tanks and mech. infantry.

Soviet tanks blow through Latvia like a hurricane. One task force blitzes to Riga, another secures the border province just east of Riga, and panicked Latvian infantry divisions bounce between these provinces. The only Latvian key province is mine, so I go with total annexation.

A fraction of a second before I press the 'annex' button, the demoralized Latvian troops hit Soviet-occupied provinces and start a battle which should be a pushover. I click 'annex', and Latvia becomes a Soviet Socialist Republic. The armies of independent Latvia disappear -- and so do the conquering Soviet troops which were doing battle with the Latvians.

Good question. I didn't have the presence of mind to check. It was getting late, and I had an autosave that was only a week old so I just quit.

However, I don't think they should go to the force pool either, especially if at some future point there will be a partisan threat in newly-conquered provinces.

yes, of course, but we need to know if they completely vanish (= BUG) or go into the force pool (not goin into the force pool would be a ENHANCEMENT then) :)

Right. This one shouldn't be impossible to reproduce; I'll see what I can do when I get home.

OK, reproduced it, and found out a couple of things that might be of interest...

I did the same thing again, blitzed through the Latvian province to the east of Riga to Riga with one armored group, sent in an other to arrive an hour or two later to mop up. However, this time the units in the eastern province didn't retreat to Riga but fled South, so I had to send an infantry group to kick their asses in yet another province. So, this is what I had when I paused the game and annexed Latvia:

1. One armored group in a Soviet-controlled Province A (East of Riga), pretty soon no Latvians in this province.

2. One armored group in Soviet-controlled Riga, a Latvian group fleeing Riga but still in the same province, running and waving the white flag. As far as I can tell, no group is trying to attack Riga.

3. One infantry group attacking the Latvian infantry division in Province B (South of Province A).

Result:

I get two message windows: first, a message that Latvia accepted the annexation proposal, and on top of it a message saying I lost control of Riga to Latvians.

Group 1. stays put, as does group 3. Group 2 goes to the force pool, along with Field Marshal Zhukov who was in charge of them.

I tip my hat to Maximilian I, he asked precisely the right question here. If I may speculate a bit, it appears as if the fleeing Latvian infantry somehow caused the disappearance of Marshal Zhukov's tanks. (Contrary to what I said in the first message, I now believe that in the first run my divisions didn't have time to actually fight the fleeing Latvians; I got messages saying I lost province A and Riga to Latvians, but I'm pretty sure that I didn't get a "Latvians are attacking" message.)

I've seen this happen as well. It appears that if there are opposing forces in a province who are not actually fighting, the phenomenon Kekkonen describes will occur when you annex the nation.

As Germany I was conquering Denmark. Somehow or other (and don't ask me how, and I'm afraid I have no save from there), divisions of both Germany and Denmark ended up in the same province; not fighting, neither side fleeing, just both standing there. I had control of the province, however. When I annexed, I got "You have lost control" (although I actually hadn't) along with the annexation announcement and both forces disappeared.

When I reloaded from a save, I had to move a different force into the province occupied by both sides and eliminate the Danish force. Then annexation worked properly.

They do go to the force pool when you get the message "we have lost control of provice X"

They're ready to be deployed in 2-3 days usually.
I've been playing a big blitzwar with Germany, annexing the whole of mainland Europe (including Italy, Turkey and France yes) and each time, it happened that my army is in a province together with a fleeing enemy army, I click annex, and the enemy army is totally gone, and my army goes to the force pool.

Also, sometimes enemy forces just stay in the province, without a white flag, standing there, doing nothing. When I click annex, they disappear, and so does my army standing there, to the force pool.

so far I have yet to lose a single unit, perhaps those who lost their troops should check the bottom of their force pool again?
At least you dont really lose troops, would that still make this a bug ?
