I mean this guy.

20160609230530_1.jpg

So, Jomsvikings hold castles in my lands. Normally I wouldn't mind, but I'm going for Frisian coast achievement and fear they ruin it, two of those being in North Sea.

So I went out of my way to vassalize them. This fool doesn't want to accept because I'm wrong culture and not his de jure liege and a king, not emperor. So I use the power of Google and find out their capital is apparently 303 - Skåne. Thus follows conquest of Denmark and adoption of Norse ways.

He is not impressed.
20160609225513_1.jpg

Not only does he still not consider me his rightful liege, he actually thinks I somehow got weaker (Power +++++/--). And there's limit of how far I go for this overconfident snarker - no interest for empirial title.

How can I get him under my wing? I can just drive them out, 'course, but I'd rather not. They've fought in my wars for centuries now, not to mention their sweet unit sprite. Can someone please help?

As an additional information, they have one barony in Prussia.

Is he really wrong about your culture, Norse is pretty awesome.

If he holds just a baronry, and you own or vassals own the higher counties, you should have a CB to take the baronry.

What do you mean he has only one baronry in Prussia he seems to have more then that.

If he has more then one you can take what you need from him without worrying about him disappearing he'll just hate you for a bit. Attempting to vassalize him is the logical and natural thing to do. But just taking them is any other option.

And if he isn't going to bend the knee anyway him and his opinion don't matter until he does.

Might as well take them now and attempt to vassalize him later.

Was Saxon before that.:p

He holds four baronies, in Gelre, Celle, Werle (all held by vassals of mine) and last in Samland, in de jure Lithuania but held by Swedes. I have no CB on him, just option for expelling.

These are the conditions to vassalize someone peacefully:
  • You need three of:
    • Same culture
    • Rightful de jure liege
    • Good opinion
    • Two or more ranks greater
  • Pass/fail
    • Same religion
    • Target cannot be a king
    • If you aren't the de jure liege you need to have a common border.
Based on your screenshot you're failing the first set of criteria. A holy order or mercenary company is mechanically considered a titular duchy, i.e. one with no de jure counties or corresponding de jure kingdom, meaning you have to be an emperor to vassalize it.

All right... so despite their titular duchy actually having de jure capital, holding it doesn't matter because it's considered landless? That clears it, thanks.

Guess I'll have to evict them 'less I change my mind and form empire at some point.

Actually, unless you, Odin forbid, convert to Christian at some point, they won't be a problem (possibly even helpful). I think last time somebody decoded the requirements for "The Frisian Coast Is Long", it just required ownership of the provinces. (Although there was also a possibility the achievement is simply bugged...)

Now why would I do that? It's good to be Fylkir!:D

Expulsion will be the last resort anyway, if achievement doesn't want to ping up. Thanks for that, too.

Little bit of explanation on the bolded part. What they have right now is a de facto capital barony, not the hardcoded de jure capital of a de jure title (e.g. Vilnius province for d_lithuania and k_lithuania). This is part of the de jure/de facto split in this game.

I'm aware. I was talking their coded capital, as set in landed_titles.txt
Code:
d_jomsvikings = {

   color={ 50 50 50 }
   color2={ 255 255 255 }

   graphical_culture = norseholygfx

   capital = 303

   title = "WARCHIEF"
   foa = "WARCHIEF_FOA"

   # Always exists
   landless = yes

   holy_order = yes

   # Parent Religion
   religion = norse_pagan

   culture = norse

   # Cannot be held as a secondary title
   primary = yes

   # Extra income due to donations, etc
   monthly_income = 2 # (Must be an integer between 1 and 512)

   mercenary_type = jomsvikings_composition
}

303 being Skåne, so figured all I needed was k_denmark.

In practice, d_jomsviking isn't de jure under k_denmark (according to the same file).

Yeah. I saw de jure condition and googled their capital, blindly took Denmark, got confused and made thread. Then @StarSword posted and it clicked to me that titular duchies might not necessarily have relation to kingdom their capital is in - makes sense, as they have no de jure territory and can't get any.

First time in all my hours in CKII that particular fact got relevant...

Grant him a duchy within the kingdom of Denmark, he'll accept vassalisation. If it still says power-, raise a few mercenaries.
You sure that works? I mean d_jomsvikings is supposed to stay primary, and it didn't work with county.

I'll do it though. Pressing fabricated claims seems to work fine, so I can get those back.

ETA: It sure does. Wrapped up rest of the coast and granted them d_skane. De jure block disappeared and warchief happily accepted.
