Is it possible to start the game as something other than a king?

I bought the game yesterday on sale in anticipation of CK2. I want to get the feel of how the game works before the new one comes out. Anyway, I wanted to play as a count and try and work my way up to a throne, similar to what many of the crusaders were actually trying to do. I'd love to play as someone like the Sire d'Coussy as the count of Picardy. I'd work my dynasty to dukedom, then challenge for the throne of France.

Did you also buy the Deus Vult expansion?

In any case, yes, you can play as a duke or a count. You can select the ruler tier before starting the game.

Just above the list of Kingdoms there are three shields. The first, which is automatically selected, is a list of Kings. The second is a list of Dukes and the third is a list of counts.

anyhoo, if you want to start out the game on "easy and fun" level, pick the Duke of Apulia.

It's pretty easy and fun to become King of Sicily with the de Hautevilles, and from there, the sky is the limit.
