Alright, since pagans are not allowed to grab or create titles, would it be justified that I give myself claims on other Finnish tribes territory so I can DoW? Then I would play with same rules as normal Christian countries since they can freely DoW pagans and take their lands.

Otherwise it would be damn difficult to expand since I cant use the inherit tactic because all pagans are have Elective Law and being a Count of two provinces doesnt get you much prestige to grab titles. I want to simulate a quick conquest of the other Finnish tribes by one King.

Unless you want me to wait 50 years to get enough prestige to DoW a single country ;)

And when I need to create title, I just load myself as a christian, create the title and change back to pagan. I also need to swap between christian and pagan when I need to load my savegame. (what a fuss playing with pagan country)

No, Samis were not an Ugric, but Finnic tribe (and still are). Unless you consider the term "Finnic" to represent Baltic Finns of course. :)

The Reign of Väinö I (1066-)
Part One (1066) - Introduction

crusaders20080629173129sm5.jpg

Väinö Hämäläinen, High Chief of the Tavastians.

Väinö Hämäläinen was elected the become the High Chief of the Tavastians at the Tribal Käräjät (Court/Assembly) in 1066 after his predecessor had died. He was a proud and skilled warrior and thus was chosen to be the suitable leader. He married the daughter of the previous Chief, Rauha, in order to mark his succession of his predecessor.

crusaders20080629173139xd6.jpg

Rauha, wife of Väinö.

The tribe of Tavasts is one of the several tribes of Finland and one of the strongest. Their biggest competitors are the Kvens to the North and the Karelians to the East and there are several smaller tribes around.

The Finnish tribes in 1066

Right at the start of his reign, King Väinö showed excellent profiency in warfare. Väinö also realized that futile struggle with the other bigger tribes is pointless and it would wiser to conquer the weaker tribes first. If enough powerbase could be gained and all of Finland conquered, he could claim the ancestral lands of all the Finns.

The Reign of Väinö I (1066-)
Part Two (1066-1068) - The first years

crusaders20080629173129sm5.jpg

Väinö gathered the wisest and strongest Tavastians and several important duties duties were given to the people he saw as worthy.

crusaders20080629183345kb5.jpg

It was noteable that he decided to give the important post of spymaster to his wife Rauha. There were rumors that there were many more capableable person available, but Rauha somehow managed to "persuade" him.

In two weeks' time, happy news spreaded; Rauha was expecting a child.

crusaders20080629185001gy8.jpg

Now, after having the comforting news that he had someone of his own blood to succeed him, Väinö decided to make his dream of Finnish Kingdom true; he decided it was good time to attack the weak tribe of Satakunta to the west. So he gathered 812 strong warriors and in the spring of 1067 he made his move.

crusaders20080629183640pj4.jpg

What Väinö didnt know, this was only the beginning of a major conflict in Finland, later called the Finnish Tribal Wars.

A battle was joined, and the warriors of Satakunta led by Ihala were outnumbered heavily and the tactical abilities of Väinö secured Tavastian victory.

crusaders20080629183800ia8.jpg

After the battle, Ihala realized that it was futile to attempt win the Tavastians in means of war, as they were so proficient in it. Therefore he tried to secure peace with Väinö offering a small sum of gold.

crusaders20080629183807ws4.jpg

Väinö, a stubborn man, refused the peace offer of course, since he wanted land and men instead of gold. So he began sieging the various villages of Satakunta and slowly Tavastians were gaining hold of the whole province.

Meanwhile, Väinö got happy news from back home; Rauha had given birth to a son. He was to be named Olavi (Olaf), originally a Scandinavian name.

crusaders20080629184710zy0.jpg

The effort in gaining hold of the Tribe of Satakunta prooved to be very slow; it had taken an year and half already. Therefore Väinö gathered more able warriors from Tavasts, and 500 men were conscripted. At the same time he paid a visit to his home, being away for almost two years already. He was greeted by his wife, and the following morning, Väinö left for war again. He was to receive more happy news soon; Rauha was pregnant again.

crusaders20080629185001gy8.jpg

After Väinö had gathered more men, Ihala of Satakunta realized he cant win the war. He decided to save his own life by offering his place as Chief of Satakunta to Väinö. Väinö accepted the offer.

Väinö becomes Chief of Satakunta

After receiving the news, Voitto, Chief of the Finns, was outraged. He started sending insults to Väinö and had his pagan shamans perform a curse ritual on the Tavastians. He also claimed to be King of Finland in order to annoy Väinö and his dream

crusaders20080629192106mx1.jpg

Voitto, Chief of the Finns and selfproclaimed King of Finland

Voitto arranged a tribal warrior tournament to decorate his new title and at the tournament he started to foul-mouth the Tavastians and Väinö again.
crusaders20080629184931sx9.jpg

Väinö thought it was enough. He prepared to silence the mouth of this fake King of Finland and arranged an invasion force. It would be good chance to expand the Tavastian lands at the same time.

time for some replies again

I have a feeling that this is going to be epic. :D
Epic failure perhaps :p j/k, I hope I manage to finish this

Capibara said:
Will the Mordvids be your first target? :D
Yes, I will most likely go for the Mordvins after I conquer the Finnish tribes

Kazmir said:
I'd say go for Orthodoxy, that would have most likely became the religion of Finland hadn't the Swedes managed to take control of us and convert us to Catholicism. Orthodoxy was spreading in the east already when the Swedes came.
Yes Orthodoxy would be very logical...but if I become catholic I get some nice bonuses in EU3! hehe...I can imagine the Finnish kings thinking that far ahead "Once we reach the EU3 era we dont get any tech penalties!" :p

Snugglie said:
Quite, it would be the most logical. Not to mention that in that case he can take up the battle for the Orthodox crown with the Russians and the Byzantines. :D
Sounds neat :)

comagoosie said:
 I had no idea it is going to be this tough.

I wish you luck. The best moves, imo, would be to conquer the other finnish tribes.
Not that tough because almost all my opponents are one province minors :)

Enewald said:
Why don't you just some load some extras to make the game allow pagan playing?

And I shall definetly be following this one... ;)

But were the samis really ugric tribes?

And what happened to the goths living along finnish coastline?

Extras? You mean mods? Well I would, if there existed any for Deus Vult...and as comagoosie said, the Samis were finnic tribe, not ugric

The goths of Finland were assimilated by the emos :p and the Vandals left for spain in the 5th century :p

Coinneach said:
Claims on the rest of Finland don't sound too unreasonable, especially if your character is the self proclaimed king of the finns ;)
Yes it's reasonable, thats why my character just proclaimed himself to be the King of the World, thus giving me claims on every province hehe :p

Kazmir said:
No, Samis were not an Ugric, but Finnic tribe (and still are). Unless you consider the term "Finnic" to represent Baltic Finns of course. :)
correct :)

Auray said:

Thank you! and welcome

Snugglie said:
A good ambition, and -- if carried out successfully -- pointing towards a future great power.
One has to note that most of the provinces are pretty poor so I might need to expand somewhere else aswell :) Finland as great power sounds nice

comagoosie said:
It is a pretty crowded region. Hopefully you will prevail :)
Dont worry, the number of nations will decrease pretty fast :p

Snugglie said:

Yes, he needs to be fast since he's 30 already. And the event didnt really make much difference since I had claim on their province already *nod nod* :)

Enewald said:
Go Väinö! :D

Olaf, sounds too christian!

the name Hämäläinen sounds lamish...

but what can we except from our ancestors... :p
Most of the Finnish names in the game are originally Christian...and Olavi sounds like a good name for a King :) and in my opinion Hämäläinen is better than "of Tavasts" :)

comagoosie said:
One down, how many more to go?
After quickly counting, 14 left :) my BB is gonna skyrocket...I hope I dont become a common crusade target hehe

TheConqueror said:
Go! Tavasts I did it like you in my AAR too! ;)
Hmm yes I read your AAR and it's very interesting :) perhaps I should help the lettigalls to form their own nation in my game :)

Actually, you get no tech penalties for being Orthodox, you can still be latin tech with Orthodoxy as religion. But yes, Catholicism (and reformed/protestants) tend to have better bonuses in EU3.
