Part XXXIII, “Gloria in excelsis Deo" - (1713-1715)
In 1714 renewed violence against Christian traders in Constantinople occurred. Repulsive scenes took place in Constantinople.
Unprotected traders were slowly beaten to death by violent mobs all over the city. Probably 400 traders were cowardly murdered in the city in one day. Amalric was fuming and declared war on the Ottoman Empire.
Amalric sent the entire army against the Ottomans to finally wipe out this home of evildoers from the earth. Since the Ottomans was much weakened after the numerous wars against the kingdom only a small army defended Constantinople.
Amalric´s men immediately massacred the tiny Moslem army that stood in their way and then went on to attack the Holy City with artillery, cavalry and infantry in a massive assault.
The city was attacked on all sides and a huge fleet consisting of 60 ships cut off all supplies. The Christians attacked bravely without regard to their own lives since this was a holy city worth dying for. The Turks who were in the city, barbarous hordes all of them, desperately fought on the walls and repelled the first assault.
Many Christians died horrible deaths but new soldiers stepped forward and replaced the fallen ones. The artillery hammered day and night and bloodthirsty knights yearningly awaited a breach in the wall. Finally Amalric, protected by divine might, entered the city as a part of the wall succumbed to the intense bombardment.
He was accompanied with his most powerful knights and as he entered the Turks inside gathered to deliver battle. Amalric armed on all sides with the sign of the cross rushed upon them violently and overcame them in a quick skirmish. The Ottomans turned in flight, but most of them were killed when they tried to escape.
However they came back again, reinforced by others and joined by civilians, joyfully singing and praising the devil. A new battle commenced but again many Turks were left in the streets with their heads cut off at the hands of Amalric´s men. In the end the Ottomans decided to flee for their lives chased by wild knights who joyfully massacred all Moslems they encountered, while singing and drinking wine.
Amalric assembled his men and nobody in the whole world had ever counted so great an army of Christ before. Knights, counts, barons, peasants, baptized Arabs, all joined by the common wish to clean the Holy City and restore it to God.
After the initial defeats the Turks decided to surrender and many were immediately cut to pieces in the streets. The survivors were put in cages like animals. Many of the Christians had received martyrdom, and, glad and rejoicing, they had given back their souls to God. Hence the Christians treated the prisoners very harshly indeed.
Amalric entered the Sultans palace and gave the captured Sultan a blow that cut off his head. The Ottoman Empire was no more. Finally the Ottoman Empire, a shadow of a shadow had ceased to exist.

This was a huge victory for Christianity and this also meant that Amalric immediately proclaimed himself as Roman Emperor of the Third Roman Empire. He turned Hagia Sophia into a church again and invited the Pope to the opening ceremony there.
It was a truly solemn moment when the Pope entered the old church and officially installed Amalric as Emperor of the new Roman Empire. When the ceremony was over the old king Amalric was left alone according to his own wishes. He knelt before the altar and began to say his prayers as he had learnt them:
"Avenge Lord our blood which has been shed for Thee, who are blessed and praiseworthy forever and ever. May we continue to struggle in Christian battle lines, most invincible lines, struggle, that we may continue to assault infidels wherever we can find them and may we all deem it a beautiful thing to die for You in the land in which You died for us. Amen."
Amalric stayed there until the morning without moving and, as far as anyone could tell, without ceasing to pray to our Lord. When his men later found him before the altar he was dead.
When Amalric died, all the princes of the Kingdom assembled. All were in agreement as to what they wanted and his son Amalric II was anointed and crowned solemnly and in the usual fashion in the Church of the Lord's Sepulcher four months after his father's death.
To honour the Christians who gave their lives, honour Amalric and the new Roman Empire Amalric II decided to put up enormous sports meeting all over the city where prisoners had to fight each other and wild animals that were brought in from Africa. The ones that survived were sold as slaves. Finally a dream had come true, Constantinople was again in Christian hands.
