Started as Duke of Lombardia. Now have way too many duke titles. Trying to get to king. I have enough to be King of Italy, but in my game (DV w/patch normal/normal) von Franken is the King of Germany, Italy, Burgundy and France.

Ideas? I tried usurping the title then going to war. I took control of all his personal lands, well okay, I missed one in Africa, and could not get the score even close to what I need.

What's the difference between grabing and usurping titles?

Grabbing gives you (more?) badboy, but can be done at any time provided you can pay the prestige cost.

Ursurping gives no (or very few) badboy, is cheaper prestige-wise IIRC, but can only be done when you control at least two thirds of the lands the title encompasses.

Only Duke and King titles can be ursurped.

To take on a powerful lord like the Holy Roman Emperor, you need to occupy all his demesne lands. You'll never get a high enough warscore to get a title like King of Italy otherwise.

Okay, but I occupied 9 of his 10 counties and it gave me a WS of around 350. When I put in the deal for the Kingship of Italy, that is 2800 plus.

I used most of my prestige in usurping the title and I doubt that last African county is going to up my score by 2500. Even if he were to take the deal, I would lose around 2400 prestige putting me negative. How is that suppose to be a good deal?

Total occupation will let you a much greater war score than just the sum of his individual provinces. Try to occupy his last province, then look at your warscore, it will likely be much higher than with just 9/10 of his provinces. CK is weird that way.

(And personally, I would consider a kingship worth a few hundred points in negative prestige at least. )

Also, if you own all of the enemy's personal demesne, he ALWAYS accept whatever deal you throw at him. Doesn't matter what is it, as long as you can select it, he will take it.

Take that last province and your war score will be in the thousands. It might even top 10,000. Plus, he'll agree to anything you lay on the table.

Precisely, but also make sure that any provinces that you seized from him in Italy you don't loot unless you don't want any of them.

Oh, he's been out of Italy for awhile now.

I will give it a try. The thing was I had all his lands but he made peace with someone and got that African land before my peace offer came in.

I didn't think about the "screw you'" present but I like the way you guys think.

Thanks

If he took time to consider your peace deal in the first place (which gave him time to get the African land), you didn't have his whole demesne. If you conquer someones whole demesne, you're effectively holding them at swordpoint at the negotiation table: they'll accept whatever peace deal you offer them, no matter how unfair, instantly.

True. I sent troops next to all 9 of his lands, declared war and moved in. In the time it took to win the seiges, he made peace with a few enemies. I saw that one of his lands that was help by an enemy was released so I took control of it. it was all the delay that let him get that African land. He didn't have it before my DoW.

He just has too many vassels to pull troops from for me to take in a fair fight.
