Kidnapping should not "necessarily" reveal the identity of the captor

Let's keep in mind that we're talking about the medieval "kidnapping" of rulers, here.
It was very official and very public. And that was the point too. You would absolutely let everyone know that a noble is hold captive because what you wanted is a ransom or a diplomatic asset.

And it was fair game, too. It happened all the time.

If the captor wants to make it public, that is fine. This is why I said in the OP that using the kidnapping for any public benefit e.g. ransom etc. should automatically reveal the captor. But there should be an option to keep it hidden in case some vengeful (or psychopath) ruler captures someone and wants to torture them in their dungeon without anyone finding out.
