  • Europa Universalis III Complete
Hello, I just nearly completed my first full game as Number 1 power using the United States. I chose ideology over establishment in the one tech if it helps with my question.

From 1896 I had become a Socialist country without me really trying, it turned out alright and I began making more money than before; however after a few years of that I noticed the percent of people voting for the American Party begin rising. I was trying to go for either the Democratic or Republican party (the conservative one not the liberal one) but both of them never go higher than 15 percent while the American party has 50 and the socialist party 20.

I suppose it would make an interesting history, but I don't really want a party that kills 25 percent of my pluarity or puts slavery as one of its positions (this isn't a game problem since I'm about 600 points ahead of GB who is in second place, its more of a personal matter)

So any advice on how to get these Nativist out of office? If all else fails then I'll just tax the poor so badlly that I get a socialist government again.

Are they fascist? If so, once they change the constitution you can just manually change it again, by first setting parties to "bannign allowed" or whatever it is called, then voting rights to "universal suffrage", then switching the ruling party to a liberal, conservative or socialist one and lastly banning the American Party.

That should end you up in a democracy with a bit of militancy and angriness, but nothing you couldn't handle.

The constitution change might end up un-banning the American Party again though, but by then the lowered consciousness of the POPs ought to boost the support of your ruling party.

The rise of socialism

If u play victoria revolutions and manage your country well enough, the socialists start to gather support around 1880 and then get around 10% of the votes in the elections while a liberal or conservative party stay in power throughout the game. This wasnt at all what happened in real life. In most countries (except for the US) socialist parties continued to grow through the twenties and thirties and often became one of the major parties. One of the reasons for this was often that a big part of the population was very interested in social reforms, such as unemployment subsides or pension funds, which the socialists promised to provide. In Victoria you can often ignore costly social reforms, except for public medical care. I suggest that u should be more or less forced to either decrease plurality or provide your citizens with social reforms, if not, militancy should rise and pops should turn communist.

If your consciousness is high enough, POPs will become more militant due to lack of reforms. You can usually avoid revolts, though, if you don't screw up.

This is the case in Victoria because there is no capitalism present. It's very easy to provide every pop with employment, balancing the budget to get wealth to everyone to buy their daily bread and so on. The state is in full control of all industry, infrastructure and RGO. This is why the population never become revolutionary in Victoria.

However, if the game modelled the capitalism in a better way, with private enterprises competing against each other, and if unprofitable industry would actually close down and make people unemployed, then I'm sure the situation in the game would be a little different. As it is now, unemployment is not a "problem" in the game. It's a possibility to build another factory, to create more wealth or strategic resources. I hope this will change in Victoria 2.

I'm going to assume that you went with 'establishment' here. (If you did, this'll be easier to manage, but it'll still work even if you didn't.) Certain types of POP are more likely to vote Conservative than others. Essentially, the more old-fashioned the pop's occupation is, the more likely it is to be conservative. Soldiers, farmers and officers are probably what most of your conservatives are. Labourers, when not voting socialist, seem to usually vote conservative for me. Craftsmen seem to go either way.

In most countries, aristocrats and clergy are also conservative, but American clergy are liberal (because of their Liberty national value, if I recall correctly) and you probably don't have any/a relevant amount of aristocrats.

So how do you deal with this? Generally, the best way to do it is to find your conservative pops using the ledger and promote them. Since you're running a socialist country, just build new factories in the heart of conservative territory and send people to work in them. You'll find that eats away at the conservative support base rather effectively.
