Over a week ago Severian started new project, aimed to change ship's names in unitnames.csv. I join shortly later and, as mod developed, we decided to share it with this community, too. With this mod we want to:
1) Expand ship's lists in mentioned file. As an example France has only 4 names for BCs, so if player builds more they are named "1st BC Flotilla" etc. We want to provide additional list for ships, so if player desire to base his fleet on BCs, each of them get unique name.
2) Add names for destroyers and subs (and maybe transports in the future). I feel that counting each destroyer "unit" as 3-5 ships is crazy. We have numerous examples of destroyers capable of fighting with heavier ships (Tassafaronga is best example, I think). I seriously doubt that CL could easily win with 3-5 DDs. That's why we scrapped initial idea (DD=2 ships) and now each destroyer have it's distinct, original name. "HMS Greyhound" looks far better then "1st Destroyer Flotilla" in ship's sunk list, too Same thing goes with Subs.
3) Final thing is an historical OOB. I like to build historical ships and we agreed with Severian we want to give player such possibility. That's why we group units in the following way:
-group units according to HoI2 classes (unless things are really messy - as with UK's subs)
-finish each list with additional units; names are taken from future/older ships, other ship's classes, and sometimes pure imagination. Of course, everything in line with time and place of war.. well, excluding few easter eggs we prepared for you
In version 1.0 we aim to change all ship's names while leaving this mod "universal" and available to all. With version 2.0, we plan to edit scenario files, too, to create historical OOB & change ship's names properly. Also in 2.0 we probably change models.csv, to include new types of ships
