Over a week ago Severian started new project, aimed to change ship's names in unitnames.csv. I join shortly later and, as mod developed, we decided to share it with this community, too. With this mod we want to:

1) Expand ship's lists in mentioned file. As an example France has only 4 names for BCs, so if player builds more they are named "1st BC Flotilla" etc. We want to provide additional list for ships, so if player desire to base his fleet on BCs, each of them get unique name.

2) Add names for destroyers and subs (and maybe transports in the future). I feel that counting each destroyer "unit" as 3-5 ships is crazy. We have numerous examples of destroyers capable of fighting with heavier ships (Tassafaronga is best example, I think). I seriously doubt that CL could easily win with 3-5 DDs. That's why we scrapped initial idea (DD=2 ships) and now each destroyer have it's distinct, original name. "HMS Greyhound" looks far better then "1st Destroyer Flotilla" in ship's sunk list, too :) Same thing goes with Subs.

3) Final thing is an historical OOB. I like to build historical ships and we agreed with Severian we want to give player such possibility. That's why we group units in the following way:
-group units according to HoI2 classes (unless things are really messy - as with UK's subs)
-finish each list with additional units; names are taken from future/older ships, other ship's classes, and sometimes pure imagination. Of course, everything in line with time and place of war.. well, excluding few easter eggs we prepared for you ;)

In version 1.0 we aim to change all ship's names while leaving this mod "universal" and available to all. With version 2.0, we plan to edit scenario files, too, to create historical OOB & change ship's names properly. Also in 2.0 we probably change models.csv, to include new types of ships ;)

Nice idea, although IIRC the excel files that store information are not limitless, so if you add 400 destroyer names for UK, let alone US, you may run out of room before you are done.

The excel files indeed aren't limitless, but you can always edit it in wordpad. We tried it - it works. You could always discard some units, too. Does Armenia really need 25 Strat Bombers, anyway? ;)

In the first part we're using historical names only. They are sorted according to HoI2 DD classes, each "type" starting with ship leading its class . Then, we're using additional names - either historical (post-war or pre-war) or fictional, but fitting :)

You can see some examples in the first post

BTW, we're facing a serious problem now :( You can read more in the following thread:

Beta 0.2 is available for downloading.

We've already exceeded max capacity for excel file - now it ignores last lines (YUG units). In future version we plan to delate some unecessary units (like 25 Amenian Strat bombers) & provide additional lists for countries that player could copy-paste

I'll provide list of delated units here, for both information & discussion

We won't update this mod for about week or something like that

Hope You enjoy it ;)

We're using Wordpad for editing, but it seems that unitnames.csv has a limit anyway. It's bigger then in Excel (capped at 65.562), but it exist :(

As seem in this topic few people had problems with expanded file, I hadn't. However, after adding RM I tried it again and YUG units were discarded :( So it seems there is no workaround for this ;(

No idea how many ship/unit names we're supporting within CORE, but as we've modelled the navy 1:1 (single unit subs/destroyers), plus added loads of additional names by default I'm pretty sure we're exceeding the max Excel limit ourselves (the old Excel version that is), without any problems AFAIK.

Since Wordpad is also Microsoft related that may be the cause of things. Ever tried Notepad++? Very, very convenient, and free. :)

Unfortunately mod files are still in Polish, but maybe English version will come soon. It's not very important files in Polish, but it can produce some problems. At this moment the best way do enjoy mod is installion EmEditor or Notepad++ and replacemant unitnames.csv in folder DB. Modded unitnames you can find in folder named "Wersja dla posiadaczy EmEditor lub Notepad++". I recommend to do backup of your unitnames.csv in case of troubles.

Here is direct link to the mod - it's Polish version. Link to English version is in the first post.

Great idea for a mod - I'm sick of destroyer flotillas. Clearly they have the stats of a single ship, not a flotilla (compare a destroyer and a light cruiser).

Excellent work, chaps.

EDIT: Oh, you could maybe add King Edward VIII to the list of British battleship names - it was the original name planned for the Prince of Wales, prior to the Abdication.

On the assumption that at some point you intend to correct/modify the models.csv file, here are a few corrections for Great Britain & Germany:

Great Britain

Hood-class = Admiral-class
Erin-class = Queen Elizabeth-class
Queen Elizabeth-class = Revenge-class

Great Britain in particular needs a fair bit of correcting actually. The main problem here is that all of her pre-Nelson battleships are thrown together, when in fact there's a clear split between them. All the ones beginning with 'R' (Royal Sovereign, Ramilles, &c.) are Revenge-class, whilst the rest (Warspite, Malaya, &c.) are the older Queen Elizabeth-class.

Also, HMS Argus should be an Argus-class escort carrier, not a fleet carrier. Likewise, HMS Hermes should be a Hermes-class escort carrier.

Germany

Nürnberg-class = Leipzig-class
Moltke-class = Deutschland-class

The Leipzig should be the lead ship of its own class (with the Nürnberg), not a K-class, as is the case at present. Also, the German Moltke-class battlecruisers Schleswig-Holstein and Schlesien should in fact be Deutschland-class (not to be confused with the later 'pocket battleships'...) battleships - the first class of German battleship (Great War) - on par with Britain's Queen Elizabeth-class.

King Edward VIII was to be the name of the first King George V class. Which would have been the 'King Edward VIII class'. After the abdication, it was to become the King George VI class, but King George suggested it be the King George V class, due to his fathers efforts with Britain during WWI.

Likewise, HMS King Edward VII name is going to impossible ... but for flavour ... meh.

Erin ... wheres that in Vanilla?

Great Britain in particular needs a fair bit of correcting actually. The main problem here is that all of her pre-Nelson battleships are thrown together, when in fact there's a clear split between them. All the ones beginning with 'R' (Royal Sovereign, Ramilles, &c.) are Revenge-class, whilst the rest (Warspite, Malaya, &c.) are the older Queen Elizabeth-class.

Like I said in the 1914 thread, theres not that much difference between the two. The Queen Elizabeth class was faster and larger then the Revenge, but then the Revenge was better protected.

Therefore its difficult to put as the Queen Elizabeth class as a class 1, they were far supieror to the Italian ships, and had no massive weakness compared to the Revenge.

Also, HMS Argus should be an Argus-class escort carrier, not a fleet carrier. Likewise, HMS Hermes should be a Hermes-class escort carrier.

Hmmm ... are you using Doomsday?

In Armageddon, they are all escorts. But thats wrong.

Hermes, Argus and Eagle were all fleet carriers, small ones, but fleet carriers none the less. Giving them no Sea attack value is ... annyoing.

You seem to asking for more ships to have different classes, when no classes exist.

The reason HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Revenge are the same class is becuase there aren't enough techs. HMS Hermes and HMS Argus were different classes, but the differences were minor, so Paradox just moddelled them into the same class due to tehre not being enough techs.

P.S Stop changing your flag and title! :p
