A self congratulary thread to celebrate the end of a career.
Just managed a Kerensky score, though it was close (not ridiculously close - still had some chassis and parts that could be sold but didn't need to). Had roughly 100M in the bank at end, I guess I could have bought/sold enough heat sinks to push me over the edge if it was just under the line anyway.

Playing on 1.9 with Flashpoints, Urban Warfare, but not Heavy Metal.

Started off circling neutral space to get planets and building rep, then worked over the Magistracy before going to Marik space. Crossed back and forth across Capellan space to build rep at each end, just careful to hit new planets each direction.

I built up and improved 2 marauders and progressed missile boats from centurions to orions to highlanders. After the development phase my lance peaked at 2 marauders and 2 Highlanders. With 4 missile hardpoints the Highlanders got 4xLRM 15's, while the Marauders were a 3D with 4LL+++ and a 3R with a gauss rifle and 2 LL+++. That Gauss rifle was a killer. From there on in I kept hoping to find a MAD-2R in a black market but I never did. I did add DHS to keep the 3D cool though. The headshots for salvage really are the way to build up cash.

I thought I screwed up with a reputation mistake: I lowered my Marik rep thinking I was going to push Kurita up, but then couldn't find a single Kurita contract to get my rep started. Every single one was 4 stars or higher! So I thought I had lost too much time recovering this lost rep, but it turns out there is a little more wiggle room for mistakes than I thought, and I was still able to get to Kerensky. I made a couple of other smaller errors along the way too, such as a tactical decision that caused me an Orion and a good pilot, so it shows you don't have to be all that lucky or perfect to get a Kerensky score.

Good job! I've logged well north of 700 hours of this game, but I still haven't finished a career, much less with a score like that. I think my closest career run is about 90 days to go though, so I might just have to push that one over the 1200-days limit...

That's the danger of unchecked Alt-oholism; I'm always starting new careers and never finishing any of them :)

Congrats! Getting at least 760k on the score really pushes the player; I'm at two days of finishing a Career myself, but I miscalculated and I won't get the bonus for visiting the 170 systems (lacking 19). :(
Ah well, still getting the Legendary achievement, though.

It really takes a careful planning of touring the systems in a certain order and which factions to align or not oneself with, not to mention in knowing how to maximise the potential to salvage mechs and maintain the pilots alive. And a lot of determination, not to mention a wee bit of luck with the RNG. :D

Nicely done! If I start another campaign, it's going to be a Kerensky run, and it seems like the way to do it is to not worry about reputation until near the end, hitting as many contracts as possible in the meantime.

@Kharille - If you want to get a Kerensky score you pretty much have to play ironman mode. It's hard to make up the difficulty points elsewhere and still get the score. Ironman isn't that bad if you play cautiously. You need to pay attention for ambush contracts though... there seem to be a few.

@stjobe - I have done that a few times too. I find the building part of the game where your company is growing its mechs and options the most rewarding. Once the lance is more or less set and you're grinding for cash, it's defintely harder to stay interested. It was only having the goal that kept me going

gh0s7 and MarkDey - Faction reputation almost sank me! I think it's pretty safe to tank Canopus and Taurians right away, but to get enough contracts you pretty much have to keep the rest happy. At some point though, you have to go all out on getting two more negatives. I went Kurita because I couldn't get a positive contract with them, and Capellans seem to be surrounded by enemies, so may be one of the easier ones to find contracts against.

Sounds reasonable! Makes me wonder if I should start a forum story thread when I do my Kerensky run. I could probably play a mission every day - I'd just need to find a way to post daily forum updates where writing them doesn't take up too much time.
