Keeping Bishopric advice?

My bishop turned heretic and I banished him so I took over his Bishopric. Previous to this he was not granting me any levies or taxes because of his high favorability to the Pope. Now that I control the Bishopric as a Duke I get the "wrong government type" penalty but it seems to me to be better than before, I get some taxes and all the levies. This Bishopric is in my capital county so shouldn't I just hang on to it? What are the down sides of this? Thanks and I'm pretty new to CKII even though I've owned it a while, finally really get into it.

It's usually just better to grant it to a courtier that loves you like any other Barony.(Especially when you get a piety bonus for a clerically educated character)New Bishop will probably love you more than the Pope.

Might as well keep it until you can get hold of a barony to fill out your demesne with instead. Thing is that a county or even a barony would have a higher turnover in troops and income (because there is a -75% income penalty for having the wrong kind of holding). Long term it may be a bad idea, as the bishopric wont get the upgrades which the bishop might have been able to afford.

Yeah, there's no point in giving the holding to anyone else until you've got enough holdings that you're at/near your demesne limit. Sure, it's more efficient, overall, for a proper vassal to be holding the proper barony/bishopric/city, but it helps YOU more if you control it directly, rather than holding nothing else.

Whenever I start as a count, I always seize the city and bishopric until I manage to get more counties. It always results in me being able to field a slightly larger army than I could otherwise. And when I finally do release the holdings, I've got better/more loyal vassals in place and some extra piety (worth the loss of prestige for seizing, IMHO).

Thanks for the advice, makes sense. I'm pretty early on in my game so I really could use those extra levies for some upcoming conquesting, plus the Pope is a pretty well liked fella these days so my chances with a new Bishop are a bit slim. So, I think for now I'll hang on to it and use the extra troops, and eventually hand it over to a proper Bishop that will hopefully like me enough to bring in some decent taxes.

In fact, for small starts in general, I like to banish everybody. You get all their titles and all their cash (potentially enough to hire mercs), and when you eventually generate new ones they're blissfully ignorant of your tyranny.

right click on a holding you own.Three buttons appear.the one with 3 crowns creates a random vassal of your culture that takes ownership of holding.If you do this you lose the Piety bonus for granting a Bishophric.

If you don't do this. If you give the holding to a courtier with an established dynasty he will most likely either inherit something else later on or someone else will inherit the holding - and it will possibly leave your realm. It can create very messy situations. If you use the create vassal button you will be creating a new Dynasty with no ties to other realms.

Actually, you do get the Piety bonus. It doesn't tell you but if you look at your Piety score you will see it go up.

If you use the create vassal button you will be creating a new Dynasty with no ties to other realms.

While it is true that they won't have any ties, you aren't creating a new dynasty: All characters are created lowborn.
