So I'd like to restore the Karling dynasty as Count Herbert of Vermandois in 1066. But clueless as to actually go about this. It seems like it'd be an incredibly fun game but also really challenging. Any tips?

Use your alliance with your wife's family to your advantage. With their help you can pretty easily get the duchy of champagne. That'll get you a strong power base in France. Invite high diplomacy males if you have to, to get the fabricated claims quicker. If you need help fighting other vassals in France be sure to get alliances with other strong dukes in France. You can use your karling name to your advantage as other female dukes will often accept marriages because of your families prestige, which will get your dynasty elsewhere . From a strong power base and good alliances you can try to usurp france by forcing it to be elective. Or by staying in good relations with the Pope get an invasion somewhere. I tended to get invasions for Scotland and could expand from the into Ireland and Wales, while being strong enough to win the crusade for jerusalem.
I like to start in the William the conqueror start. As its easier to secure an alliance with england if you need it. He has two or three daughters, and due to your families prestige he'll accept a marriage with your son.

First, I would get to work on murdering your wife's family. Eventually you should be able to get her to inherit or at least get into a situation where you can install her as a claimant.

Next, work on pumping out lots and lots of Karling babies. Seduction focus might be a good call for this-- your dynasty brings a lot of prestige with it, and if you have enough bastards you can bring in a lot of claims and alliances.

You may be able to get the King of France to give you a duchy, but if not, he'll probably eventually put you under a duke. If so, not to worry! Faction your duchy into elective monarchy, then you can faction yourself onto the ducal throne! Once you're a duke, it's pretty smooth sailing, really. At that point, you shouldn't have problems even marrying into the HRE Imperial Family, brining a claim into your main line.

Marry Agnes of Toulouse. Kill her brother if any born. If you want you can kill her sisters too but not very necessary. She will inherit at least one duchy and other claims for whatever her sister inherited. This will really help your early game.

Do you mean marry my son to her? I've tried marrying him to other females who can inherit but their fathers always have boys. And I usually have 50/50 a chance of ever succeeding with killing them.

Have you tried using intrigue focus? When you spy on somebody you have a reasonably high chance of triggering an abduction or a murder event that would make you more likely to successfully kill them.
