Hi everyone,

I am here to present my first real city. I've been playing for 3 weeks and made 3 test cities before this one, to understand all the aspects of this awesome game.

It is a Swedish town, located on sea front and a local important sea/train connection hub. I have made the city looking like some of the cities I have seen. Being French, maybe some northern people here will find some stuff weird. Do not hesitate to tell me!

The downtown. Like many cities, it was originally made of wood, and after a big fire, rebuilt in stone using a grid plan.

The seaport is installed near the downtown since it always been a naval city. I use a circle system to avoid traffic congestion. You can see the highway splitting in two when arriving on the area. At first, only the left block existed. The right side has been recently built while the city keeps growing. It goes from 14 000 to almost 30 000 inhabitants in few years.

This is a typical suburb design. A mix of old wooden houses on grid areas, surrounded by some flats and houses on more curved roads.

This is the first area developed out of the downtown, we can see some little flats build after the ww2. And some bigger flats during the 60's 70's. This is the most charged area in traffic, where everything is connected to each other.

Another neighborhood, illustrating the mix of type of housings. This is a small train/bus hub, often crowded.

One of the most expensive, with a great view.

The commercial area, with shops, cinema and restaurants.

I don't use any traffic mods

I'm very much liking what I'm seeing here, a very realistic look, the relative small scale areas you're using, use of paths, realistic traffic solutions.
The only thing I'm missing is some handplaced trees and bushes.
Very well done for someone who just got the game!

Thank you for your feedback ShilkaLive.

You are right about trees and bushes, it is a point I am not satisfied about. I need to spend some time to improve this.

I have spent 3 weeks on this game, but I have to tell the entire story and not make people I am the genius I am not :), I have spent years and years on simcity 3000 and 4, so, city planning is something I am quite used to. I knew the kind of trap you can fall in when you never played a game like this.

I like it. Only thing the contrast between the city center and the surrounding suburbs is a little too sudden for me.. maybe if the city center would be a bit bigger, it would feel different.. just an opinion :) but otherwise, nice job.

Thank you hunkske :)

You're pointing an interesting thing I am struggling with for many years: how to make a smooth transition between the downtown and the suburbs?

I did not find THE solution for now, keep testing some things. I will make another save of my town and try to grow up the down town and will show you if it make more sense.

I think you could do the transition by adding more parks and trees at the downtown edge, and trying to change where the style/theme where you want the transition.. usually in the downtown / centre area you have all the nice buildings (like the big church/cathedral , opera , museums, etc..) and then spreading towards the suburbs it starts getting less nice buildings.. (there are some nice themes now on the workshop - you could use the berlin based theme for downtown , the uk or belgian theme for the transition area...) maybe something to try out ;-)
