I am having the same save game issue. It gets really annoying because you have poured several hours into the game up until that point. Then, when you are ready to make your move for world domination, no go . . . .
@BigBadBob: The strategy that I have had the most success with is turning north and going after the CSA first. Step 1 is to strategically redeploy all of your divisions to Washington DC and the surrounding areas. After the start of the war, try to cut off New York and Pennsylvania. You can usually cut off Wisconsin as well as the CSA AI will start traveling North and West to get more territory, and may abandon Chicago or Detroit. You can cut off and destroy a couple of divisions if you are successful with both encirclements. Depending on if you get aid from Russia, Canada, Italy, etc. you can add more troops to your front lines. Keep a small front and protect DC. In some cases, give up territory and let the AUS and CSA battle it out in Illinois and Missouri while you aim for VP provinces. If you can knock out the CSA, your rear will be clear. Then you can slog it out against the AUS. The PSA might be difficult, though, but they usually do not attack in large numbers at first, so you can keep them at bay with a militia screen running from North to South. Beat the AUS, then you can focus on pushing west and knocking out the PSA. Do that, then the Canadians may give you back Alaska and New England. However, I don't believe there is an event to allow you to reintigrate Hawaii, even after annexing it (like some of the Russian events). Anyways, that's my strategy, and it has worked a couple of times with no extra units. Also, put everything into reducing dissent to 0% ASAP, as your units fight better with no dissent. Then try to upgrade everything to '36 units, which can hold their own 1 on 1 with the CSA and AUS units. Only then should you start creating new units.
