Castile, January 1454

The Ambassadors of Sweden, Venice and Castile sat at the round table in the anteroom to the grand council chamber. No one else was in the room and the guards at the door prevented anyone from approaching the room. Pedro Antonio de Sancta Clara waited for the ambassador from Venice to finish before addressing the Swedish ambassador.

"Castile has noted that Sweden has done as it said it would and declared war against France. King Juan II has instructed me to tell you that we will also declare war against France at the earliest opportunity. At the moment Castile’s stability is precariously low (-2) and the newly conquered provinces in North Africa, Kabylia and Orania as well as some in southern Castile are restive and are occasionally rising in revolt. Castile needs to get its house in order before taking on the French."

The Swedish ambassador quickly responded.

"I would urge your king to reconsider the delay in initiating the war against France. They grow stronger every day and Castile must attack now!"

"Castile ‘must’? Castile knows what it must do to maintain the balance of power and it is ‘going’ to do what is necessary for that balance to be maintained. My king notes that Sweden has already reached a peace agreement with France while its allies, Poland, Lithuania and Bohemia still fight. None of them can reach France nor can France reach them. We are simply pointing out that this war will find Castile and its allies in the forefront of the hostilities. If we lose it will go very hard on us while Sweden and Venice have little to fear at this time. Castile has sent a letter to France urging them to divorce themselves from their holdings in England. Granting those English provinces independence will go a long way to reducing the tension in the region. However if this doesn’t happen then it will be war. King Juan II will of course not sign anything signifying a formal alliance between our three countries. He needs above all deniability in this matter. However he gives his word that as long as France continues to show a desire to expand at its neighbors expense Castile will oppose them. Let us pray that Castile is strong enough to withstand the onslaught of the French armies."

The two other ambassadors voice their agreement and the three men drink a toast to victory before they leave to report to their kings.

King Juan II was a sick man and yet even with death staring him in the face he was still concerned about Castile’s planned attempt to rein in the rampaging beast called France. Pedro filled him in on the recent meeting and Juan simply nodded his agreement to what had been decided. Pedro bowed to the king and went to put into motion the machinations of war.

A battle takes place in Champagne and the Al Djazair army is caught between two French armies and is destroyed. The peasants in Toledo revolt and win a battle against a Castilian army.

December 1455
The peasants in Pfalz revolt against France.

January 1456

December 1457
France agrees to pay Poland 200 ducats for peace. Castile loses a battle in Gascogne with the French.

February 1458
Again a French army of 30,000-men attack in Roussillon and the 17,000-man Aragon army defeats them in battle. Bohemia declares war against Hungary. Poland, Lithuania and Sweden join Bohemia. Siebenburgen joined Hungary.

March 1458
Another 41,000 Frenchmen attack in Roussillon and the 20,000-man Aragon army loses the battle. France besieges Roussillon. France annexes Cologne.

May 1458
The peasants in The Grampians are revolting against the Monarch of Sweden.

July 1458
Orania and Kabylia revolt against Castile. Armies are sent to put down the revolts.

October 1458
The peasants in Rumelia are revolting against the Monarch of Venice. Venice declares war against the Ottoman Empire. Bosnia joins Venice. Ak Koyunlu joins the Ottoman Empire.

November 1458
France captures Roussillon. Castile besieges Cascogne. Two French armies attack in Gascogne. Castile defeats the first army but loses to the second army.

King Enrique IV lacked the intelligence to understand the danger that Castile was in but Pedro knew that no matter how one looked at the situation it was clear that Castile’s fate rested in the hands of Venice who were already at war with the Ottoman Empire. How much help could they provide? Pedro just shook his head and prayed.

Venice 1459-1464

The year 1459 finds me once again among the living. Things have not changed much in the past fifteen years. Venice is still allied with Bosnia and yet again embroiled in a war with the Ottoman Empire and Ak Konyunku. Doge Pasquale Malipiero rules our nation. He is a man of average abilities who looks more like a large hulking and hamfisted dockworker than the Doge of a great country. He has a jaw you could break your fist on, a flat nose, and a wide forehead framed with intractable wiry mouse brown hair cut in the simplest of styles. Although not the most intelligent of men, he commands my respect for he is honest, honorable, uses plain direct language, and is wise enough to know his own limitations. His tendency has been to tell me what he wants Venice to achieve and then leave me free to create and execute the plans to accomplish that goal.

We were sitting in the Doge’s study discussing my recent trip to the Iberian peninsula. We had reached the decision that, due to the current war with the Ottoman Empire and Ak Konyunku, an inactive war against France would be the best way to fulfill Venice's commitment to Castile and Sweden. I was just getting ready to depart when the letter which forever changed Venice’s future was delivered. As the court page handed Doge Malipiero the rolled up parchment, I noticed the seal was that of the King of England. I had no idea what news it might contain. As my liege’s eyes moved slowly and intently down the document, I could see the agitation in his face intensifying and the blood in his neck rising. Suddenly he balled the letter up in his left hand and slammed his right fist down upon the serving stand beside his chair. The ornate stand shattered under the blow. His eyes turned to me. “Francisco, make ready for a full scale war with France. We will do to those bastards what they did to my daughter!” He then handed me the letter. After reading it, I too was infuriated. The French would pay dearly for this. I consoled Doge Malipiero, assured him of our victory, and then excused myself to my chambers to figure out just how we could achieve this impossible task. After several restless days and nights of constant pacing in the battle room, I had come up with a plan. It would be filled with risk but if it worked, the French countryside would be littered with the bodies of their dead soldiers. We achieved a peace settlement in the Balkans and began raising armies and building galleys as quickly as possible. 30,000 troops boarded ships in Dalmatia and prepared to set sail on a chilly morning in October 1459. On the pier, General Colleoni and I grasped hands and wished each other luck. He would fight the battles in France and I would remain in Venice to coordinate the intricate logistics operation, deal with the coming rebellions, and handle diplomatic issues. I was confident in his abilities, leadership, and judgment. He had served me well in the Ottoman campaign and we thought in much the same way. I assured him that fresh troops would be sent in six months and handed him a letter, “When you defeat the French Army in Provence, give this letter to their highest ranking officer who is still alive and send him to the King of France.”

Enclosed below are the contents of that letter:

To the french king (who I will not honor by naming or even capitalizing his title),

We had hoped to remain cordial with France and even to work together in harmony. However, that can never be possible after what has transpired. As you know, my youngest daughter Caterina who is beloved by the Venetian nobles and commoners alike was married to a fine English nobleman ten years ago. The King of England has written to inform me that French soldiers intercepted Caterina's carriage and heinously raped her. I demand French blood be spilled. This atrocity will not go unpunished. You may consider this our official Declaration of War.

Pasquale Malipiero
Doge of Venice

Venice kills 50,000 french soldiers, 2 warships, successfully sieges 4 provinces, and 2 provinces are eventually ceded to Venice for peace. France also cannot capitalize on the opportunity to subjugate the Iberian peninsula, has to deal with internal revolts, and winds up being DoW'ed by many German states (then has to pay multiple times for separate peace). France is still at war. Venice loses 3 ships (to attrition), 20,000 soldiers, and takes a tough hit in the reputation department.

Pedro Antonio de Sancta Clara and King Enrique IV sat at the dedication of the war memorial to the Viennese general Colleoni. The hero of such battles as the bridge of Varleno and the siege of Alsace not to forget the pillaging raid of 1460. When it came time for Pedro Antonio de Sancta Clara to give his speech the crowd was in a restive mood but by the time he finished there wasn't a dry eye in the crowd. The women were sobbing and the men were trying valiantly to keep any tear from escaping their eyes. As Pedro sat down king Enrique woke up and asked if the ceremony was over. Pedro sighed and said yes it was. So the king rose and followed my the nobles exited the stage to the cheers of the crowd.

Very good Backpack. You did your best.:)

France 1464-1469

France started out in a war against pretty much everybody...soon after the rest joined the war!!...

After having paid off a number of alliance & concluded some white peaces France finally found itself in a war with only England, Burgundy and Genoa...a great conference was organized and the end result was that the valiant English stabbed poor Burgundy in the back by accepting to end the war by forcing Burgundy to hand over the reigns of Lorraine and Luxemburg...and in return England would reclaim suveraignty over Wessex and Lincoln.

After the worst troubles in France had ended France found itself at a crossroad where she had the choise of engaging in an aggressive campaign against the hated Castillians...but the new French king thought of him self as a great diplomat and first wanted to try his hand at securing peace...thus France chose the road of peace...and passivity...and now it only remains to be shown if this was a mistake or an act of brilliant statesmanship

Pedro Antonio de Sancta Clara and King Enrique IV looked at the document before them on the table. Pedro was the first to comment.

"He has a rather flowery way of writing doesn't he?"

King Enrigue IV who had trouble reading word larger than a single syllable just nodded his head, which was what he normally did when at a loss for words. Pedro finished reading and straighten up filling the room with the muffled crackling sound coming from his back. What was Castile to do was the question before him and the King. What to do ?

Castile 1474

Pedro Antonio de Sancta Clara nudged Enrigue IV with his
foot but the king continued to snore. Pedro shook his head at the drunken fool and put down the documents that Enrigue was suppose to read and sign. If the king had been sober he would have read that the country was in an unstable state of affairs (–2 stability level). However its treasury had close to 750d in it and the opportunity to increase the training of its land forces had just become possible. (Moved slider +1 land.) Pedro walk over to the map spread out on the table and saw that France was continuing to cast a blue shadow over Europe. Venice was little changed but Sweden had just had a successful war against Moscowy. Castile was at war against Morocco and Algiers, which Pedro wanted ended, as soon as possible. Castile didn’t need any more North African provinces at this time. At least the revolt risk was lower that before.

June 1474
Castile reaches a Status Quo peace with Morocco and is now at peace.

September 1474
Venice went with the selected Queen Caterina and the Venetians in the two queens.

October 1474
Pedro Antonio de Sancta Clara bows with the other nobles to the new ruler of Castile. Queen Isabel I had just become ruler of Castile and already Pedro saw the difference in the diplomatic abilities of the new queen. Improving relations with Castile’s allies has become much easier.

January 1475 France Declares war against Burgundy. Saxony, Oldenburg, England, Bavaria, Genoa joined Burgundy. France is alone, I wonder why, bad breath? A petition for redress occurs which we deny. (-1 stability) Asturias revolts but the rebels are destroyed.

April 1475
France annexes Burgundy. Pedro has had a map installed in his library, which he uses to color in the different provinces that France has conquered. The map is turning bluer with every passing year.

July 1475
Ingermanland revolts against Sweden.

October 1475
Vendee revolts against Venice. How Venice has managed to hold on to Vendee this long is a mystery.

April 1476
France annexes Oldenburg. Another country ceases to exist.

June 1476
VIVA ESPANA. Castile chooses to become Spain.

December 1476
-1 Stability hit because of a meteor sighting. Haven’t the fool peasants seen a meteor before?

January 1477
The Iberian wedding. Aragon went with royal wedding with Spain. Aragon becomes a vassal to Spain. The celebrations went on for a week in the capital. Even Pedro who was known for abstaining from celebrations, parties or even a gathering of friends joined in and drank a toast to the queen and her diplomatic success.

Relations with Aragon +150
Relations with Portugal –50
Stability +2
Aristocracy –1
Centralization +1
Innovativeness –1
Merchantivism +1
Offensive Doctrine +1

Finally get back to level +1 stability

January 1478
Diplomatic insult from Morocco gives Spain a CB for 12 months.

June 1478
Finally up to +3 stability.

December 1478
Gave a state gift worth 198d to Venice in gratitude for its support in the last war with France.

January 1479
Handed the game off to Venice.

Venice 1479-1484

Greetings. I am Domingo Mondavi, nineteen years of age, a noble, an aspiring musician, a man pressed into military service against his wishes by an overenthusiastic father. I am a lieutenant in the Venitian Army, an aide to Field Marshal de Treviso, and most recently the ink stained personal scribe of said Field Marshal. He has grown weary of writing about this four hundred year span of time and decided that, for a short while, I should do so instead, “It will be easy Domingo. I will talk and all you have to do is write down what I talk about.” And I can tell you he is always talking. Going on and on and on about things that happened long ago in the time of my grandfather. In fact the Field Marshal is talking now. Something about him returning in 1479 to find Venice wealthy beyond their wildest dreams and in a great position to strike at Austria. I know he will not read this. After all it is history, and I have heard his feelings on history...and how he despises reading it - more than once in fact thank you very much. I am pretending to pay attention while the Field Marshal continues his rambling oratory about raising armies, laying siege to cities, and other things of a military nature that are of no real interest to me. My eyes remain on the Field Marshal as my thoughts scamper off to more important and attractive things…like…Clarise. Ah, Clarise, that raven haired beauty whose smile could melt a man’s heart and his brain too. I can picture her now smiling at me, sunlight streaming down upon her olive skin, her large breasts heaving against her tight lacy top - struggling to break free….”Domingo!”, my head jerks up, “Wipe that bleary eyed look of your face right now!”, Clarise has vanished and my visage is full of irate Field Marshal, “I ought to stick your head on a spike and hang it from my door as a warning to other impudent little smart arses!”, my mind is tightly focused on survival, “Now, tell me about the events of 1479-1484! Your life depends on it.” I see my life flash before my eyes…it is very quick…and….unfortunately….there are no scenes of me with Clarise. Luckily, a part of me must have been listening to the Field Marshal for I satisfy him with the following report, ”Sir, conditions in 1479 were as follows:

Ruler: Doge Giovanni Mocenigo (high avg)
No Remarkable Leaders (other than yourself of course Field Marshal)
Alliance w/Bosnia, Tuscany, Siena, Sweden
War w/Duchy of Athens
Extremely Bad Reputation
11 Provinces (Picardee revolted away to France over last 15 years)

Venice starts out rich. It's time to payback Austria for previously annexing our vassal Mantua, two other Italian provinces, and now threatening our allies Tuscany and Siena who border Austria. Using a CB, Venice goes to war against the alliance of Austria, Papal States, and Albania. Austria loses 5 provinces and 200 ducats. Venice is dishonorable scum and everyone DoW's us. In 1484 we are at war with the world. Hopefully 1479-1484 is remembered as the beginning of Venice successfully standing up to the Habsburgs and Hungary...and not...the war that guaranteed Venice's fragmentation and eventual destruction.

Timeline of important events included:
January 1479
Isabel y Fernando rose to the throne in Spain.
Venice offers white peace to Duchy of Athens. Duchy of Athens accepts. DoA’s only province is controlled by Albania.

It seems that Spain has a fixation on North Africa in this game. I got them out of the last war with no lost but it appears that they can't stay out of trouble. Yes I want the French AI. That sucker just keeps gobbling up countries right and left. :( It will be very interesting to see if Venice can survive the hell that they have created.:D

without having looked at the AI files...could it be that the french AI just has a higher aggresiveness? ...(not starting this discussion here...but it would probably add something to allow a tweak or two of the AI)

Status: Spain is at peace and in an alliance with Portugal and Aragon. Navarra is no longer in the alliance. Stability is at +2 and there are 237 ducats in treasury.

Pedro Antonio de Sancta Clara sat perusing the official account of the last five years of the reign of Queen Isabely Fernando. The sanitized account was to make sure that future historians had the queen’s version of what had transpired from 1494 to 1499. He dipped his quill in to the glass ink holder and made a notation in the border for a minor correction. Satisfied at last he read the account one more time from the beginning.

In the year of our lord 1494 it was noted at the magnificent court of Isabely Fernando that Sweden declared war on Muscowy. Venice, Bosnia, Bavaria and Savoy joined Sweden in its righteous war. No one was surprised that no one came to Muscowy’s aid. Sweden was also racked by rebellion in the province of Ostlandet. Little else of foreign interest to Spain happened that year. Domestically it was a mixed year. Spain successfully established a trading post in Mazatlan to add to its increasing overseas empire. At the same time rebels captured the province of Kabylia on the North African coast. By the end of the year El Grand Capitain was besieging the rebels. Spain’s intrepid explorers discovered the Caribbean Sea, the Gulf of Darien and Guantanamo. At the end of the year the peasants in the capital, Casitlla revolted but they were defeated in battle.

In 1495 the people of Bulgaria declared independence from Venice and declared war against Venice. Bosnia, Bavaria and Savoy joined Venice but Sweden dropped out of the alliance. The peasants in Hannover revolted against the Monarch of France. Sweden entered an alliance with Hungary, Poland and Munster. El Gran Capitain puts to the sword several groups of rebels in Spain and North Africa. In the New World we discover Tampico Bay, Mississipi Bay, Bayou, Gulf of Mexico and Jamaica. The call is sent out for volunteers to go overseas and start trading posts and colonies. The numbers are far too few for the needs of Spain.

1496 and word reaches the court that France went with Take Control of the Guilds. Venice captures and annexes Bulgaria only to have them revolt less that two months later. The peasants in Anhalt, Meath and Wessex are revolting against France. The peasants in Trøndelag are revolting against the Monarch of Sweden! Meanwhile Spain discovers Matagorda, Mobile Bay, Tampa Bay, Havana. We also establish a colony in Guantanamo and a trading post is Matagorda.

As 1497 starts Pedro is pleased to note that a Saint was sighted winging its way over Spain and the people took it as a sign that God was pleased with Isabely Fernando’s reign. (-3 revolt risk for 12 months) Pedro is interested in the fact that another province has revolted against France. This time its Kent. The war between Sweden and Muscowy ends with Muscowy paying 500d to Sweden. Venice is at it again with the annexation of Bosnia and the declaration of war against the Ottoman Empire. Bavaria and Savoy join Venice while Ak Koyunlu joins the Ottomans. This year our explorers discover Cape Canaveral, the coast of Carolina, the everglades, Cape Hatteras and the Bermunda Triangle. Trading posts are started in Bayou and Havana.

In 1498 Kustrin revolted against France’s new king, Louis XII. The people of Norway declared their independence from Sweden. Hungary, Poland and Munster dishonored their alliance with Sweden. Sweden enters a new alliance with Siena, Eire, Baden, Holstein and Navarra. Bosnia revolts against Venice and Wessex revolts against France. Meanwhile Spain discovers The Bermudas and Tortuga Island.

It should be noted that peace-loving Spain has stayed out of the various wars that have racked the continent. Queen Isabely Fernando has plotted a course for Spain that is to put our hopes and dreams in the prosperity to be found in the New World. It has been decided to call that promising land America.

Signed
Pedro Antonio de Sancta Clara
Ambassador at large from the court of that most wonderful of queens, Isabely Fernando.

Venice 1499-1504

sdp1599.jpg

A shot of Francisco working on his novel.

Venice, the Queen of the Adriatic, was strong in 1499. I was not surprised to find us at war with the Ottoman Empire and Ak Konyunlu. It was getting to the point where I could run this drill in my sleep. We quickly ceded Daghestan (no land connection, different religion, foriegn culture) to Ak Koyunlu for a separate peace and turned our forces against the Ottoman Empire. By concentrating our armies I was able to kill two of their most notable generals in separate battles and subsequent relentless pursuits. After laying siege to all of the Ottoman Empire’s holdings, a peace agreement was reached in 1500 which saw the heavy yoke of Turkish oppression lifted from Macedonia and Kosovo as they were transferred from Ottoman to Venitian rule. Why did we settle early for two provinces when we had a death grip upon the Ottoman’s jugular? A few reasons really. One, Macedonia and Kosovo were the only Ottoman provinces having the same culture and religion as the rest of our empire. Two, Kosovo provided us with a land connection to Rumella and Bulgaria. Three, we were now free to attack an overextended, bloated, and most notably unallied Hungary.

My chest swelled with pride as I stood before our army, 90,000 strong, in Dalmatia. I had staged men strategically throughout the mass of assembled soldiers to echo my words. In a loud clear voice I began, “Look at the men around you. They number 90,000 scarred and combat tested veterans outfitted in the best equipment money can buy. They are men who can be relied upon to cover your back in a fight. They are men who will not flinch in the face of danger. They are Venitians! Now…look across the border. What do you see? The Hungarians…they are poorly lead, ill equipped, and small in number. They will fall like chaff before the scythe. Today you and I march forward together into battle. Victory is ours for the taking! This is a glorious day. Remember it well, for it shall be spoken of for generations to come. I am proud to lead you, the greatest army in history, the Venitian army!”

Our forces rode forth to victory against Hungary as predicted. Venice accpeted Serbia, Croatia, Wallachia, Odenburg, and Krain for peace in 1504.

France: Lots of revolts...but...no problems for big blue....uhhh...BTW hovered the mouse over the French capitol...11 on land tech...EEEE gads man...Venice is in the stone ages!

Sweden: Some revolts, some wars, treading water.

Spain: Annexed Aragon as soon as I started the game. Looks like the
Spanish AI took our cheap shots about its lack of ability personally and decided to outdo France this round. Moderate revolts...some wars in the new world...AND...now allied with Portugal and England.

ok I guys I take it that u read my entry in the MP forum...u can relax Its not that bad :)

The situation in 1504 was that France had a low stability of -1 and was at war with some heathen african tribe called Ashanti...However when since this could hardly be called a war and since France possessed the most splendid and advanced army in the world something clearly had to be done!...and after a carefull study of which of our nabours we had any outstanding issues with it was decided that the existence of the basque people was clearly an insult which could only be corrected by force of arms! so....

March 29, 1504 : France declared war upon Navarra."
March 29, 1504 : Sweden joined the war on the same side as Navarra, Siena, Eire, Baden and Holstein in their war "
against France.

...France now suddenly found itself at war with the despised sweedish hillbilly warmongering vikings...

June 1, 1504 : Our army in South Indian Ocean has been completely annihilated!"
June 1, 1504 : Our navy in South Indian Ocean has been completely annihilated!"
June 1, 1504 : Our army in South Indian Ocean has been completely annihilated!"

October 5, 1504 : Holstein accepted our generous peace offer."
....and gladly decides to join the empire!

(we must save the pagan people from the eternal hellfire ...its all for the good of their souls...really it is! :D)

June 9, 1505 : Zhengde rose to the throne in China."
(who the hell is that & and whats china?)

NOW...now was the time of terrible revenge against those turncoat Venice pigs! muhahahahaha!

July 1, 1505 : France declared war upon Venice."
July 1, 1505 : Helvetia joined the war on the same side as Venice, Bavaria, Savoy and Mainz in their war against "
France."

(Well, actually I didnt invade Venice once...and I tried several times to buy them off with a seperate peace...but they wouldnt accept my money...?? why ohh why? - anyway I only attacked Venice because I had a free CB and they happened to be allied to Savoy & Mains who possessed some territory in Germany which I needed...as it happed I also took a bit of territory from Bavaria too)

July 11, 1505 : Saxony is now granting Bavaria military access to their country."

August 10, 1505 : England is now granting Venice military access to their country."

(it seems everybody and their mother is granting Venice military access!)

November 16, 1505 : Heretics happened to us.
(actually quite fitting for once...since it happened in some remote pagan province in africa)

February 1, 1506 : France accepted peace with Eire on the following terms : Connaught to France, Leinster to "
France & Munster to France."
(listen to me...its only for your own good,...really it is...I´ll protect against those pesky brittish)

(uhhh super alliance here!)

September 17, 1506 : Fortification Effort happened to us.
(well hannove might not be the most important province in my empire but well...now its lvl 3)

August 27, 1507 : We captured the province of Piemonte from Savoy"
August 27, 1507 : Savoy accepted our generous peace offer.
(piedmonte & some dutch province to France!)

September 1, 1507 : Austria is now granting England military access to their country."
September 7, 1507 : Genoa is now granting England military access to their country."
September 11, 1507 : Austria is now granting Poland military access to their country.
(its not only Venice who can get MA all over the place...seems to a quite popular hobby these days)

August 26, 1508 : Sweden accepted our generous peace offer.
(Sweeden wanted to give up several provinces...but I graciously declined and only took whats mine(! :D) - Jutland to France!)

September 1, 1508 : A White Peace was signed between Aztec Empire and Zapotec, Maya and Navaho.
(not smart fighting against each other when the white man comes along!)

September 21, 1508 : France accepted peace with Navarra on the following terms : Return to Status Quo.
(the whole war started because of the constant provocations by Navarre...and sadly France had to accept that I could not revenge this...a day which shall live in shame)

October 3, 1508 : Saint Performs Miracle happened to us."
(we truly are blessed!)

December 6, 1508 : France accepted peace with Benin on the following terms : Palanas to France, Ivoria to
France, Accra to France & Nigeria to France.
(more pagan land to us!)

...To sum this all up...I hope that Sweeden and Venice does not consider this a direct attack on their interests...because trust me it wasnt...all I can say is that if u insist on allying yourself with the german minors...then sooner or later u WILL find yourself in a war with France...

France has NO territorial claims against Sweeden, Venice or Spain...but I do consider the north western continentel europe to be within my sphere of interest. ...additinally when it comes to colonial expansion I consider west africa mine...then spain can take south america (I had the option to invade the Maya..but decided to decline since this would probably put us up against each other?)...sweeden & venice...well u can take what u like...and north amerika well....well see....I cant see that yet anyway.

one reminder...the ToT is now in effekt...Portugal just stole of my colonies (dakar)...I would like to advice spain that I will consider it an act of aggression if any of my colonies are taken during your turn!! ...and additionally I feel free to take back any colonies that the AI has taken from me...

Pedro Antonio de Sancta Clara raised an eyebrow as he read the missive from the French ambassador.

"additionally when it comes to colonial expansion I consider west Africa mine"

He raised the other one when he read.

"the ToT is now in effect...Portugal just stole of my colonies (Dakar)...I would like to advise Spain that I will consider it an act of aggression if any of my colonies are taken during your turn!! ...and additionally I feel free to take back any colonies that the AI has taken from me."

Pedro mused. "It seems that France feels itself strong enough to dictate to the world what is to be allowed and not allowed. Pedro shook his head and ponder how to counter the growing arrogance of France. The old saying that the bigger they are the harder they fall came to mind."

He dipped his quill and started a missive to Venice and Sweden....

I would say that the very existence of the ToT is a sign of Spanish arrogance....so if u think that the fact that France declines to sign over all non european territory to Spain is an act of arrogance well then I am....but atleast no more than arrogant and full delusions of grandeur than those same spanish who lay claims to all territory regardless of the fact who possesses it or whether they have explored it yet...

I paced nervously back and forth across the room. The noise of my bootheels striking the marble floor punctuated each step. I stopped near the window and took a moment to look out over the water and clear my thoughts. After several minutes of watching small boats scuttle like water beetles along the canal,
riviera2.jpg

I returned to my desk and prepared a letter in response to the French advisor.

Sir de La Trèmoille,

Venice wishes to have no quarrel with France. We intend to consolidate power in our sphere of influence, namely Italy, the Balkans, and to a limited degree central Europe. We do not look favorably upon previous French acts of hostility. An unprovoked Declaration of War against Venice and the slaughter of 60,000 Venitian soldiers are not what we consider honoring a nonagression pact/alliance. Then France offers Venice a few ducats to forget the matter? I think not. We are not a puppet to be jerked around in whatever manner France pleases. Future attacks upon Venice or intrusions into our sphere of influence will not be overlooked.

Pedro Antonio de Sancta Clara sat at the reading table with his chin cradled in both of his hands. He had been reading for the last four hours trying to learn everything that had happened in the last two and a half years. That was the length of his exile from the Spanish court of Queen Isabely Fernando. He sighed while thinking back on the minor indiscretion with the queen’s favorite handmaiden that had brought about his down fall. The queen had never forgiven him and it was only her death that had rescued him from the boredom of the island of Malta. Nevertheless what was done was done and he continued to read about the last few years.

In 1514 Spain was at war against the pagans in the New World. Specifically the Maya, Zapotec and Navaho nations. The war was going slowly and the new king, Carlos I, wanted the war resolved quickly. Pedro was amused to note that France had guaranteed Spain’s independence that year. It was also the year that Our ally England declared war against Sweden. Portugal, Scotland, Poland and the Knights joined England. However France who was also in the alliance with us decided to decline to join the war. France and Spain in the same alliance? Spain also declined to join being busy with a war with the pesky pagans. Siena, Navarra and Eire joined Sweden. France was still having minor revolts from its recently conquered provinces. Munster was the latest to revolt followed by Anhalt. Sweden was also having problems when Østlandet revolted. Spain was also having the occasional revolt but was having no problem destroying the rebels. Pedro was shocked when he got to the military disposition of the Spanish army. 20,000 men in Kabylia, 20,000 in Tunisia and 25,000 in Sicily led by El Gran Capitan. In Spain there were 40,000 in Valencia and another 30,000 spread throughout the rest of Spain. In the New World there were approximately 10,000. The fleet, which was spread around the known world, numbered 33 warships and 19 transports. The financial burden for the nation was profound. Pedro was surprised to read that Spain rejoined the alliance only a month later. He suspected that one of the reasons Isabely had rejoined the alliance was in order to use these forces and hopefully reduce them through battle loses and take a province from Navarra. However not three months passed when the queen offered Sweden a Status Quo peace which Sweden accepted, which brought us peace with Navarra. This vacillation on the queen’s part hinted at the fact that she was beginning to lose her mental abilities. With peace at home the war effort was redoubled overseas. The war with the Mayans was proving to be inconclusive so the war effort was focused on the Zapotec nation. The reports also mentioned the continuing discoveries of Spain’s explorers.

Pedro rubbed his temples and continued to read what were last year’s reports. In January 1515 François I rose to the throne of France. Munster once again revolted against France as did Ansbach and Würzburg. In the war against the pagans there was some good news. The Navaho agreed to a Status Quo peace. All military action against the Mayans had stopped and they didn’t appear to want to renew hostilities so an uneasy standoff ensued. The Zapotec weren’t so lucky with all of their provinces either captured or besieged. El Gran Capitan died in August still on the island of Sicily. Pedro shook his head. Such a waste. Pedro read that Serbia had revolted against Venice. Queen Isabely in one of her last vaguely sane moments tried to get a peace agreement with the Zapotec but was turned down. Pedro wondered why when Spain had just about won the war did the queen want to throw most of the victory away with only a part of the Zapotec nation under Spain’s control. The last thing of note for the year was when Smyrna revolted against Venice.

Pedro leaned back and stretched out his aching back. The last notation in the report was the death of Queen Isabely Fernando and the coronation of King Carlos I. It was king Carlos I that had called Pedro back from exile and had once again allowed him to oversee the running of the government. January 1516 ushered in a peace agreement between England and Sweden. Sweden had to pay 200 ducats for peace. Then England immediately declared war against Denmark. Portugal, Scotland, Poland, and The Knights joined England. Pedro convinced the king to dishonor the alliance. This turned out to be a wise decision since in the next month France declared war against England. Scotland, Poland and the Knights joined England. France had no allies. Pedro still thought that England and its allies were going to be in for the fight of their lives.
Finally the last province of the Zapotec is captured and their nation is annexed. Pedro then offers the Mayans 75 ducats for peace and they agree. Spain is at peace at last. News comes that Sweden has declared war on Denmark. Siena, Eire and Navarra join Sweden. Denmark stands alone. Late in the year Venice declares war on the Ottoman Empire. Bavaria, Savoy and Helvetia join Venice. Ak Koyunlu joins the Ottomans. At the very end of the year Pedro is caught by surprise when the Aztecs agree to an alliance with the Mayans and Navaho. He had been planning to attack the Aztecs and this would complicate things.

1517 was quiet until April when Spain declared war against the Aztecs. The Mayans and Navaho joined the Aztecs. Spain stood alone but Pedro was confident of victory. By August the Navaho had enough and agree to a Status Quo peace. By the end of the year the Aztec were on the run and it was only a matter of time before victory was achieved.

A new leader was appointed to the war against the Aztecs. His name is Hernán Cortés. Before the month of January 1518 is over the Mayans have signed a Status Quo peace treaty. On August the 13th Spain and the Aztec agree to a peace treaty. Michoagan and Jalisco are ceded to Spain. The ink wasn’t dry on the treaty when Spain joined the alliance of Portugal, England, Scotland, Poland and the Knights who are still at war with France. King Carlos was concerned as to why Spain needed to enter this war with it powerful neighbor to the north. Pedro explained that Spain needed to join a powerful alliance and he was sure that a peace agreement could be arraigned between Spain and France. In the same month Spain offered a Status Quo peace and France turned it down. The king wasn’t amused. Having no choice Pedro orders an invasion of France. Spain besieges Lanquedoc. In September France reject another peace offer. Spain besieges Gascogne. In November Spain wins a naval battle and offers peace, which France rejects. Spain besieges Poitou. In November France reject another peace offer and the king is about to send Pedro off to exile again when news comes that France has agreed to pay England 400 ducats for peace. Spain is at peace again. (Whew, that was as close as it gets.)
