Ok, so I started playing HoI2 a few days ago, and there are quite a few things I still don't know.

Right now, I'm playing a campaign that started in '36 as SU. I've played a few campaigns before, and I was reading the forums and saw a campaign idea where someone couped and allied Republican Spain and then sent troops over to help in the Civil War, and built up a powerful ally.

I decided to try this, but it isn't going so well. I did coup them and ally them before the war, but now that we're in the war, there is no way for me to get troops to Republican Spain. I built 5 transports and placed them in Sevastpool, but any troops I load on them cannot reach Spain. If I tell my navy to rebase in the provinces that are on the drop-down list, they get the mission but just sit in the port. I want to give Rep. Spain a lot of outdated 1918 infantry divisions, but I can't escort them there. I've given some as expeditionary forces, but so far they haven't come to pick them up, or anything. Is there someway I can get troops to Rep. Spain, or manage to help them win the war besides sending them lots of supplies and blueprints?

Also, I don't quite understand how rebasing and missions with navy work. I can supposedly dock my boats in allied ports, but when I attempt to, it tells me that the target is out of range, when it is only 2100m away, and my range is 3000. Is this a bug, or is there some kind of requirement I have to meet in order to dock my navy in allied ports?

Diplomacy screen - Open negotiations - divisions

Then you can send Rep. spain 5 divisions. And you can do that every 7 days. After a month or so they can be used by Rep. Spain.

New in DD much easier than transports. :D

Regarding the naval range. Are you looking at the range for the fleet or for a single ship? Because if you have a fleet of 11 Cariers with a range of 3000 and one Destroyer in it with a range of 500 then the whole fleet has a range of 500 and not 3000.

Alright, cool, I guess I didn't see that. But, after I send them the divisions, do they just appear in their capital, or what? Also, can I ever get them back?

And as for the navy thing, I might be doing that on some occasions, but with my transports, I just have a fleet I pure transports with a range of 3000m, and for some reason they won't rebase or do any transporting to a Rep. Spain port that is under 2200m away.

As far as I know the show up in there redeployment pool. So the AI can decide where to place them.

Nope, you gave them away so don't cry that you don't get them back. :D

From which port are you trying this and to which destination?

Yes, it might be another bug. There are two ways how to rebase fleets. And one of them sometimes doesn’t work when you are trying rebase into ally’s base. The one working only sometimes is by using “ctrl key”. If you have problem with it, try to choose the task (rebasing) from selection of the fleet on the left of the screen and then click on the base. It should work now.

From Sevastpool port to Valencia, or to Seville, both are controlled by Rep. Spain and in range.

A possible solution can be to move the fleets to the sea province in front of it and then disembark the troops instead of entering the port? Have you tried this already?

I did try moving them into the sea province, then ordering rebase, but all they did was turn around and go back to port. I'll try just having them go from sea province to sea province.

Don't try to rebase then just unload you troops without going in to the port.

Ah, I thought having to go through Turkish waters may be the problem. Is there no possible way to get ships from Sevastpool to Leningrad without being able to pass through Turkish waters?

Also, a question that doesn't have anything to do with this. For repelling Germany when they come with Barbarossa, is it a good idea to build mass anti-tank attachments to put on most of my infantry, or is better to just keep building more mass infantry?

to answer passing through the straights, I think that if you have permission to pass troops through Turkey (can't remember the name of that on the diplo screen), that you can then also pass through the straights. To answer the question directly though, no there's no way in or out of the Black Sea other than through the straights.

In terms of Brigades, the general consensus that i've seen is that your better off just building more infantry than brigading the existing ones. Generally, people recommend spending you're time and IC on brigading more expensive units like MTN, ARM, MEC, etc...

Ok, thanks.

I have an update on my current situation. The damn Spaniards screwed me over. For some reason, when the Civil War started, they went from Stalinist back to their former government type, I figure this is just forced by the event. So, I decided to help anyways and gave them some divisons and mass resources and blueprints, and they ended up easily winning against the Nationalists, where they then immediately left our alliance.

So, I now have a normal Rep. Spain except super built up and with a damn lot of troops. Was there anyway around this problem? I guess I just have to recoup and re-ally.

Also, when people are placing new troops, and there aren't any generals in the province that can hold any more divisions, what is the best thing to do? Choose a good general from the list that can command the troops, or promote the current general, or is basically relative to the situation?

I do not recommend selling infantry divisions to Rep. Spain, because the Republicans won't be able to supply or reinforce them efficiently (they arrive at 1% strength). Don't sell any divisions unless the Republicans are already winning.

You can't do anything about the Bosporous straits in the game except to DoW and conquer Turkey or to ally with it. Nothing else works.

For the SU which I am currently playing:
  • Rename any formation to include General or FM at the start of the formation's name.
Also include HQ in your larger formations because you don't have enough Generals or FM after the purge.
As your army size increases, you will get automatic promotions if that is turned on.
When the next cycle is built, go to your statistics page and use the land leaders page. Sort first on commision then on rank.
When you see a General without having General in the name of his formation, you have received an automatic promotion and can remove that General from his smaller formation and use him for a longer formation.

You should have placed your transports in Leningrad they would have reached Bilbao. You cannot go through Bosphorus, it becasue of the historical agreement signed by major powers in the 30s that forbade any naval ship to pass pthrough Bosphorus. IT was mailny the result of I WW when two German Battlecruiser reached Constantinopole, and were given to Turkey and in a nick of time attacked Allies , making Turkey join Central Powers.

Ok, what do you mean by renaming the formation? Like if it said 3rd Mechanized Division or Turk Millitary Division I would change that somehow? The rest of that I understand.

I have some other questions on my campaign. Since my last post, I've re-couped Spain and allied them once again. I've only given them 5 divisions over the entire game, and they have a total of like 49 infantry divisions. Their resources seem to be fine but I give them shipments of supplies and everything else everyonce in a while.

I have a question about leaders, again. For example, I have a province bordering Finland with three groups of divisions, each headed by a Lt. General containing three divisions. If I were to attack from that province, it would give me a penalty because I would still need an overall leader for the attack, and it would only be a Lt. General commanding nine divisions, correct? So, the best bet would be to promote one of the Lt.Generals to General?

Also, when invading Finland for the Winter War, what is a good overall strategy, and what brigade attachments should I build?

For the Great Purges, is it generally considered to be best to purge them? I can't see a 30% hit on dissent ever being good.

Ok, that is a lot of questions, thanks to anyone that answers.

Select the formation which might have 3 inf div. Then click on the formation name at the top of the screen and start typing. Then delete what is there that you don't want. You can do the same for a division by getting to the statistics page where you attach brigades, but I was recommending to change the name of formations to include GENERAL

If you have 3 Lt Gen each with a size 3 corps, then only one corps can attack without penalty, or two corps if there is an HQ nearby. The Land Combat FAQ is still valid for DD:

Accept the purges the first time that you play the SU. Get rid of the dissent immediately. The only that I am building at that time is factories, so just stop the factories and get rid of the dissent and then finish the factories. In a normal game, I did 3 rounds of 25 as the SOV.

For Finland: gather all your mountain div and put them just south of Murmansk. They move fastest in winter and use them to take Vaasa (VP). Have 6+ inf div in every border province except for Leningrad. Be ready to use two attack waves of 24 div from Leningrad. Bomb Viipuri. Even if the first wave wins, it will be weakened, so send in a second wave to continue the attack. Combine any armor with motor inf div in CA formations which will move the fastest after a breakthru. Wait until you get an event and then decide whether to settle for what we asked or to go for annexation. Annexation will give you a 5% dissent hit so be prepared for that.
