Hello, I just wanted to say that I picked this up today because of the sale and my sister thought it would be a fun game for us to play together (we basically debate what to do and she corrects all my dumb mistakes :D), and I just wanted to say that we both absolutely loved the game so far and are quite happy with the purchase!

Townville..... cute name. :p It looks like a perfectly cozy and quaint village to start with. Glad to see you didn't instantly defer to a grid system, although your shops are complaining about lack of educated workers. You might want to get a school in there somewhere. Also, I noticed you built directly off your starting highway T-intersection. I tend to warn players to leave a gap there in case you want to expand your highway in that direction. As I told another player earlier, you need to visualize well in advance where you want to run your highway lanes because they take up a lot of space and you don't want to build there. In a guide I wrote earlier, the top tip I had was:

RULE #1: Spread out your city! Don't just start building from one spot and then jam everything right next to it. You have LOADS of room! Start building a neighbourhood on one area of the map, then move to a different location and start building a new neighbourhood. Then move out further and build a new neighbourhood elsewhere. Leave some space in between these areas for future expansion like adding a highway or something. You'll need lots of breathing room for a large infrastructure as your city grows. If your districts are very far apart, you can connect them with a simple two-lane highway to reduce travel time and then remove this later as the gap between districts fills.

Ooh that’s very helpful, thank you! And yeah we’re saving up to put in a high school, though I’ll probably bring up taking a loan next time we play to get it in faster.

I was going to post similarly to Glitcher, but he beat me to it. To illustrate the 'save space' advice, note the two one way roads straight off the highway connection on my latest city. These will be deleted later and replaced by an elevated highway when the traffic deems it necessary.

I tend to grid fairly heavily earlier on as this is the most efficient use of space when money is most needed early in the game. I get more creative later on when I'm on the CBD once high density buildings are unlocked.

Looks pretty good for your first city.
You might also get some good pointers/advice from this other thread in this forum. Take a look at it when you can later: https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/index.php?threads/initial-road-connection.1121110/
The advice and suggestions are somewhat "mixed" by many users who have posted, but use your best judgment on what will work for you.

One thing I advise you to do, is to pre-plan what 9 tiles you will more than likely purchase as your city grows. Push the big globe button in the very bottom-left corner of your screen to get a very high-up birds-eye view of the area (when done, push this button again to go back to normal view). Look to see what direction you will grow, and plan to extend your freeway system towards that direction. When deciding what tiles to expand to, take into consideration where valuable resources are located (like oil). If you want to later play with ships/vessels you will need a tile with a large body of water (the edge of a sea/ocean). With trains, you will need a tile that has a train line you can connect to. Etc, etc.

Don't forget to use the Cities Skylines Wiki page on the web, to get information on things/structures you are confused about. Here is a direct link: https://skylines.paradoxwikis.com/Cities:_Skylines_Wiki

Have fun, and keep posting pictures as you expand.
PS: To most players, your first city is usually a learning lesson. If after just a couple of weeks of playing you think you would like to start over (because you have better ideas, or wish you would have done this or that) don't be afraid of doing so. Some of us spend many months and hundreds of hours on just one city.

Yeah, but don't rely too heavily on elevated highways because they increase noise pollution. It's cheaper and more effective to keep your highways at ground level as much as possible and just bridge over them, since it allows you to place sound barriers wherever necessary.

Good point, but as I tend to build highways through Industrial or commercial areas (or build those areas up to the highway) the noise issue is not quite as big as if residential areas are affected. As with all these things, it's a case of personal preference.

StJimmyRocks,
Another hint .... In your first image, about center-left in the picture, I see where you have two or three major intersections that are too close to one another. When I say "major intersection," I am defining this intersection as one where a 4-lane and/or 6-lane road, intersect.
Try to keep these intersections somewhat distanced away from one another (a reasonable gap of road between them).
Otherwise, vehicles do funny things and cause major congestion, later in your game (when you have more vehicles/traffic in your growing city).
