This post implies there is only one advanced type of government per initial form? If so, while a neat feature to represent a more contemporary government becoming more 'sci-fi' (e.g. a standard representative democracy becomign a 'utopia'), it is slightly oh so this game is still wtf incredible disappointing? As far as I can tell...

Direct Democracy -> Democratic Utopia
Plutocratic Oligarchy -> Mega Corporation
Military Junta -> Ordered Stratocracy
Military Republic -> Martial Democracy
Moral Democracy -> Irenic Democracy
Science Directorate -> Illuminated Technocracy
Enlightened Monarchy -> Irenic Monarchy
Divine Mandate -> Whatever it is where the ruler title becomes 'God Emperor'

It would be neat to see multiple choices per base govt type! I get the idea that each advanced type is supposed to be a more sci-fi/'out there' of the base form, but as an example, just from the name, Military Republic sounds more futuristic than Martial Democracy (whatever that is supposed to be)

military republic seems the closest thing to space Rome (until Caesar), martial democracy is probably starship troopers... but yes military republic sounds better and, also for me, martial democracy is not a really futuristic name...

another thing Illuminated Technocracy should be renamed Enlightened Technocracy to sound even better...

i would also prefer another name for Mega Corporation, like Corporate Congress or something better sounding...

i love all the others as they are...

YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG.

This is not a case of "Oh there's only two governments per starting type, boring"
It's a case of "Oh there's 15*2=30 types of government, ooo, diverse"

You're at a restaurant and you've got 15 choices, each of which comes with main and dessert.
It is missing the point to complain "This sux I only get 2 courses give me some choice".
The choice comes in picking one of the 15, not one of the 2.

That likely has nothing to do with Despotic Hegemony and is simply the unique government form for the Robot uprising faction. I imagine the other endgame threats have their own government types as well.

I wonder if upgrading is a possible option but not a necessity

As it say you are a Moral Democracy, you can change to a Irenic Democracy but you don't have to, to maximise you position.

From the tool tip there is a change government option even without the tech so we aren't limited to only two.

I think that AI Overlordship makes a sensible "advanced" form of Despotic Hegemony.

Despotic Hegemony - This government is a materialistic form of autocracy, where citizens are viewed as little more than cogs in the state machinery. Efficiency and technological progress are valued above all things.

In Despotic Hegemony all citizens are merely cogs working together to advance the state. However, it is ruled by an overseer which detracts from its "perfection", allowing for human (well, or alien... but you get my point) judgment and error which reduce its overall efficiency. Only by discarding the outdated, limited organic mind and replacing it with an AI overlord you can truly optimize the state.

After all, we could trust the Computer.

Friend Computer is terrible (kudos to anyone who gets that reference) I like your idea/prespective, but I think there'll be a different upgrade for despotic hegemony.

And if we're accusing (or congratulating) Stellaris of plucking sci-fi tropes from all our favorite series, benign AI despotism is the name of the game throughout Niel Asher's Polity series.

How about something like an Enlightened Empire? Why does all the imperialistic (one leader) government be on the more "evil" side?

Because power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely?

Eh... how do you interpret 'Enlightened Monarchary>Irenic Monarchy' if not as 'Enlightened Empire'? And who says a Militaristic/Technocratic autocracy is automatically evil?

These two are pacifistic. I more envision a Empire that isn't pacifistic, even perhaps militaristic to some point. But not despotic or sees his citizens as cogs in a machine etc. An Empire that works for the good of his people (no slaves but alien integration). There isn't really a fitting option for that. You are either a democracy, pacifist or (in our moral standards) more or less evil.

We don't know what the generic despotic hegemony gives, and many governments are unlocked by ethos, doesn't mean that the enlightened monarchy can't be the "good monarchy" for more reasons than that.

"Despotic" Hegemony... and the description of it clearly says it sees its citizens as cogs in a machine. and you can't have individualism with it. And the Enlightened Monarchy has the same issue with individualism and you need to take pacifism to get it. So that one isn't working at all.
