Ok, to set the stage, I've been dancing with Austria for a bit to see who will be the major power in the middle of Europe; them or my unified Italian nation. I won some early wars and pushed them eastward where, while I was busy colonizing most of the new world, they got busy eating up Poland, Lithuania, Muscowy & huge tracts of hordeland. Should have paid closer attention because they started to field a bigger army than mine but thats a lesson for another day.

Anyways, I hit on the semi brilliant idea to try and wrest the imperial throne from them so that they would lose the bonuses and have more trouble keeping that giant army intact. Spent so much in bribes to the electors that it made my head spin. Italy was hemoraging money but it seemed to be working! Thus we get the following timeline:

March 1679 I get the third elector pledged to me. Austria now has two & Bavaria two but both have crappy reps so I look to win the next election. My old king is 8/7/9 and we have a 9/8/7 in the wings. Things look good!

July 1679 Bavaria and Austria are both getting upset with me and actual ally. Between them they are allied to most of Europe. Austria even has Spain as a vassal. Am not worried though because without imperial title I don't think Austria can hold their borders or maintain their army. I've enough allies to keep Bavaria busy and should be able to slap Spain down. Still not too worried.

Late July 1679 the old Austrian king drops dead. Italian king elected emperor. Life is good.

August 1st 1679 Italian heir drops dead. Not a good development. Most of europe is sabre rattling at me so I begin building up army just in case. It's already huge but with imperial bonus should be able to keep it in the field without too many problems. Without that bonus though would get huge penalty for being beyond my force limit.

August 10th 1679 old Italian king drops dead. o_O Ok, now officially panic time. Austria managed to bribe away one of my electors by just a couple of points and regained the imperial title. Huge wave of armies marcing towards Italy as Bavaria, Spain, Austria and some places I've never heard of declare war. This is not going to be pretty.

At any rate....had a good laugh at it all. Since my treasury and army will start to self destruct pretty quickly I imagine my new capital will be north america....which I own pretty much all of. At least I'll have a direct land link to all those provinces so can have some income.

(see....keeping an up beat attitude despite impending disaster. :p )

Ouch. Even if you play without reloads, I think you're definitely entitled to one after all that. Good luck if you keep going despite the bad fortune. Hopefully you can make a dramatic comeback!

Austria will always hold a disproportionally large army due to the mineral wealth of the Osterreich* and by constant campaigning and expansion. Wresting the imperial crown away from the Habsburgs may help you, but won't significantly harm them. If you want to defeat Austria, defend yourself in the Italian Alps with disciplined troops. This becomes easier when Austria is not a lucky nation, and I usually turn lucky nations off.

*This can occur for any AI nations with considerable wealth. One time, I've seen the duchy of Lorraine build a CoT in Metz which controlled half of Europe (A bug must have deleted all of the original CoTs.) Lorraine gained so much wealth that I have seen them field a 35k army, which was soon dismantled.

A unified Italy that cannot maintain its army and gets raped by Austria deserves to lose.
He specifically said it wasn't just Austria. It was Austria, Spain and Bavaria. Also an Austria that has expanded heavily into russland, Poland and Lithuania can hardly be seen as an normal Austria especially when it has the hre.

Got a 8-8-8 heir with Portugal and then 3 "heir falls ill" in about 5 years. Sent 3 trained medicus but the third one couldn't manage it... just my luck :/

Just wanted to rant somewhere in a thread about luck...
