I mean, at maximum speed the clock ticks so slowly... It is a lot less faster than EU3 at maximum speed. It makes for some very boring times, in between wars, with most things figured out...

I wish you could speed it up a bit more... I normally pause and hit max speed all the time...

This is just.. boring..

I don't think I will ever get to the point where this game is too fast for me, at the highest setting. I like to take my time. Heck, I think speed 3 or 4 is plenty fast enough.

^That is probably the reason. The EUIV demo ran unbearably slow on my notebook, and as soon as I installed it on a more powerful PC it ran faster.
I think, that the maximum game speed is mainly dependant on the power of the CPU.

I had the same problem with my dual core processor laptop. EU3 run very good but when I installed EU4 it was very slow (1day=1sec at maximum speed). Problem solved with a new i5 quad core laptop.

For me it takes 42,39 secs to pass a month !!!

That's pretty slow. My machine is almost 5 years old now and I'm running on Linux, and IIRC it's still quite a bit under 30 seconds for me. I'll have to time it again, but I think on speed 5 one minute is closer to 1 year than 1 month...maybe more like 3-4 months but still.

Is there a cap on 5 speed, or does it literally go as fast as a machine can handle?

It seems that's the biggest differences to performance are achieved through a faster processor. An SSD drive will speed up the loading of the game (and your operating system) fairly significantly, but won't necessarily make much of and difference to the speed of the game while playing.

I'd also suggest that it perhaps isn't surprising that EUIV runs slower than EUIII - it is after all version 2.5 of the class with engine, and EUIII is several years old now.

Speed 5 will be as fast as possible as I understand it, so for higher end machines speed 4 may be a smoother experience. This is, sadly, not an issue I have until I upgrade, I'm playing on a now very dated AMD Athlon 4600+

Vanilla runs too fast on speed 3 and 4 for me to be playable (literally cannot follow whats going on).

My own mod (that adds hundreds of provinces and dozens of tags) runs too fast on speed 5, so i have to keep it at 4 in order to be able to micro properly.

Its your hardware.

Yeah I still have a dual core 3ghz setup. I could do much better now, even without dropping more than $1k.

I suspected it's processor; this game doesn't seem to do anything that would load the graphics card (a more typical game bottleneck) while with 100+ nations on the map making calculations all over the place it's not surprising it would load a CPU.

That said, if someone's running very low RAM that *could* cause an issue, but probably wouldn't unless you're really playing on a toaster.

Uhhh at speed 5 it takes my PC less than 10 seconds to do a month. It is surely processor dependent. I never do anything past speed 3 and speed 3 is only during peace time when waiting for something to finish.

Without a doubt your hardware, I've got my i5 3570k OC'd to 4.4ghz and can run 2 years in just over 40 seconds at the starting bookmark, doing it with the Rev France bookmark it slows down to taking a full minute for two years, this is also with bianual saves.

I went from a 4 core old generation CPU with 4 gb RAM to I5 with 16gb of RAM (same graphics card) and the game performance increase is beyond words.

Basically M&T mod was unplayable for me, each day would be roughly 1 second, and at the end of every month id get at least 10 seconds of complete freeze.

Now the game runs a whole month in maybe 5-7 seconds, and there is virtually no end month slow down (freeze is completely gone). Also bought a new HDD (but its a normal thing, nothing special so that cant be it).

All of that cost me about 600 euros and IMO was well worth the money. EU4 runs perfectly now (like i said vanilla is even too fast at speed 4 and 5!!!), and i also noticed huge improvement in older games as well (like CiV3 etc).
