Just managed to turn Nigeria Catholic and Portugese in around 15 years. Culture imba?

So, I was just rounding out my first play-through of the demo as Portugal when I came across how silly the culture system in the game is. Through my administratively skilled ruler, I managed to core and culturalize the Gold Coast of Africa in a short span of fifteen years. FIFTEEN YEARS was all it took for me to get rid of the African natives and make the area considered as part of Portugal's patrimony.

Does anyone else think this is as unbalanced as I do? I'll never have to worry about revolts in my colonies since:

a) they're not colonies anymore.
b) they're considered Portuguese and Catholic.

My technology wasn't even that impacted; I was the same color as all my fellow neighbors and most of Western Europe. Seems like it could really use some sort of balancing issues, not to mention that it is rather silly that Portugal could displace the Nigerian population in such a quick period...

Hello,

Yeah. The religious conversion rate doesn't really seem problematic, but the culture change is far too quick. I prefer Victoria II's system : it does take ages, but seems more believable, at least in my opinion.

I agree that religion, while fast, at least is more understandable than culture.

Portugal coudn't even conquer Morocco by the 16th century, so yes the west is too op.

Oh yeah, I also managed to convert the tip of North Africa that Portugal starts with as well!

Hello,

This game is about being historically plausible, not bound by it. In the game, don't worry, you will be able to play as Morocco and conquer the Iberian peninsula if it pleases you. And that doesn't make Morocco OP.

This was one of my bigger issues with the previous game as well, culture and religion switched incredibly fast. If I'm to be honest I'd prefer culture to virtually never change and religion extremely slowly, apart from colonies perhaps where the influx of non-natives could have a real impact, for me it's a real immersionbreaker.

IF culture should switch it should do it in AT LEAST 150/200 years... for religion... u need at least a couple of generations.. wich at the time it could be like 60/70 years... maybe 100 would be better

Well you are going to need a way to simulate the situation with culture change in the Americas, as they had a huge native population with clear cultural identities, which only changed through forced religious conversion, European suppression and massive plagues and starvation causing the culture of the European colonists to eventually dominate. 15 years seems short though, unless it is just a couple of provinces in a very backwater place, something Nigeria was not.

I think the problem is with overseas coversion and how even North Africa is considered overseas. North Africa and mainland Asia(I dont know if this is) shouldn't be considered overseas.

+1 culture conversion is absurd as it is. Theres a few instances where it kinda makes sense (think cape colony, originally portuguese, then dutch, then british, you wouldnt want that place to always be portuguese just because they were the first to settle it), but every settled territory should be veeeerry slow to switch cultures, except for the native america tags, which should have specific events to speed things up.

I personally think of religion and culture as the religion and culture of the local aristocrats/ruling class and not the average person. If you think of it that way, it makes more sense to change quicker.

However I DO think the growth rate in colonies is far too high.

Converting culture can actually be easy in Europe too.
For instance, Northern Europe typically has low base income. For instance, except for Stockholm, practically every province in Sweden is between 1 to 3 base IC. Converting all of Sweden and Finland will probably only set you back 400 or so diplomatic points.

It can result in a perplexing outcome where it's easy to Russify Sweden / Finland, but Russifying the Tatars is harder than historically (since their base income is larger).

I guess we'll have to wait for mods to fix this. Except for culture in Anatolia, the Old Prussians in the Baltic, Finns in Neva and Ingermanland, and the Tatars on the Steppes, there shouldn't be any cultural conversions in Europe.

I personally think of religion and culture as the religion and culture of the local aristocrats/ruling class and not the average person. If you think of it that way, it makes more sense to change quicker.

However I DO think the growth rate in colonies is far too high.

This explanation, while used to death by everyone who tries to explain the rate of conversion or wacky cultural mechanics, isn't very satifying either. I don't think the ruling class would convert that quick, and replacing them with yours wouldn't be very easy either.
Also, how would explain the fact that converting only the ruling class would quell any kind of nationalism as it does right now? If it truly is the aristocrats and stuff, the cultural map would be very different too, with welsh being already wiped out, as well as a lot of other cultures too.

This is irritating, and what I feared the most about this pro-active approach to cultural conversion / core process: being too easy to get cores and culture conversion.

I seriously hope it will be changed soon.

Hello,

Well, it shouldn't be too complicated for Paradox to modify that. But then the question is : will they for free, or will they package it in a future "cultures of the world" dlc ?
