So I'm playing Commonwealth.

Austria has a 65 year old ruler no heir. On death, succession war between me and Castille. I would've either auto won or Castille would've declined since they were at war with Ottoblob and Tunis.

The old fart lives for 5 years with no heir. Has an heir at 70 and dies 5 months later. He was literallty the 3rd oldest ruler in the game.

I feel like there needs to be SOMETHING we can do force an enemy ruler to at least have a higher chance at dying rather than sitting there biting my finger nails just to have my dreams crushed like this over and over.

Just please make espionage have something like "while building a spy network enemy ruler has an extra 1-5% or whatever chance to die every month or something"

I know this isn't even the worst luck I've heard of much worse.

Because the AI isn't already annoying enough with their espionage actions to the point where people disable the DLC just so they don't have to experience any of em.

Them killing your ruler for no reason is exactly what the game needs.

Accept your bad luck and move on, kthx.

We had an event called "Regicide", where you could kill a ruler if your Spy Network was at 100 for a while.

They got rid of it the next hotfix, thank god.

An idea group that'd regularly allow you to PU all of Europe as a Christian, and still totally useless for ROTW? I'd prefer something that had a bit of a wider application.

I don't think killing rulers is a good idea.

But I think agreements could be made between countries with dynastic links. They didn't just leave it up in the air and Christians most of the time needed heirs from marriage. But the current system means that they don't need a queen to get a heir. Or a queen appears upon getting a heir.

So Old rulers without a heir wouldn't be able to pull a heir out of their ass, and would instead make a agreement to pass the throne to another part of the dynasty or someone with dynastic links. This would lock creating a heir. Upon the death it can still be contested and everything, but it just gives a bit of certainty. And the time before the death could maybe have battle lines drawn, with powers joining to 'Prevent Union'. France wouldn't care if two minor Germans PU, but will care if their rivals and fellow Great Powers, Spain and England are about to unite and would prepare before hand to prevent that.

More minor powers could also be forced into unions, not in direct war but strong arming or through combined interests. So France with Brittany and Spain with Portugal don't have to play luck of the draw. Instead they just have to be using Influence Nation, have a royal marriage and then either enough military power, a powerful common foe or something else. That allows a action, Bind Dynasty. Which will unify them under a PU upon hitting a condition either immediately or upon some time. Like a Male and female ruler, will unite in marriage and thus instant PU. Or a less immediate one would be Ruler named as heir, which is when they don't have a heir and so instead your ruler is named as the heir and thus PU upon their rulers death. Which also locks creating a heir, but is more the option for imbalanced powers not more even powers.

These would take time, and playing the diplomatic game to get the dynasty to tie together and to keep other powers off your back while doing so. Maybe even once the PU hits, their will be missions to keep them under control and bound to your dynasty. Like Austria PU over Hungary would be interested in driving the Ottomans back. While Aragon under Castile would have missions about expanding control in Italy.
