Nah 1780-1830 needs doing first ;)
Real proper Napoleon scenario.

Couldnt wait to try to keep a Shah-i-Shah Peter III on the throne as Supreme Commander of SMOM and Tsar of all Slavs, Emperor of Constantinopel and Protector of the Holy Lands. :D
Oh yeah, and friend of the revolution.. lol

We obviously need a WW1-game. This period has been sadly overlooked in Paradox games; given a half-arsed representation in Victoria and then nothing. Many small provinces fortified to hell and gone for me!

I think Hearts of Iron is good for WWI, of course it could be more complex, but WWII could and should, too.

I don't have a problem with someone posting about what's next for Paradox in the Rome forum, since this is the latest project. The OT forum is too diverse, and I would not have been inclined to read this thread, if it was moved. Perhaps the moderators should have an OT, but purely Paradox game related forum...could call it "Paradox Plans..."

Personnally I would like to see a Victoria 2. I have been heavily addicted to EU3 to the point that my wife calls the computer my mistress. :D

But I would really like the oportunity to due a Mega campaign from EU3 to Victoria to HOI. Perhaps they could do a game that covers from 1836 to 1956. Of course it would be difficult, and the game engine would require major changes since the shock/fire combat model would not work out too well for the modern period. Not sure if you could have an game engine were the combat model evolves from 19th Century style warfare to mid 20th Century style warfare.

World War II is definitely the advent of mechanized warfare, and in some respects it makes sense with how it is handled by a seprate, war focused game-engine Hearts of Iron. Of course the Hearts of Iron engine has problems, in my opinion of how the air and naval campaigns are handled, but that is a separate and long discussion.

Yeah, that could be interesting. But a contemporary game would have the slightly disconcerting effect of becoming obsolete with every passing day.

Really recent history hasnt created many new states or political ideologies, so I think it would work well...

Personally what im really interested in is modern concerns of statehood - i.e. creating a developed country from a developing one by choosing relevent policies, or in the case of developed ones, gaining prestige through soft power, helping less fortunate nations become developed, and building free trade areas and (perhaps) superstates like the EU.

Of course, people who wanted to play more aggressively could act out a nationalist scenario like China taking Tibet and Taiwan or the USA vs USSR or something, but it would be really cool to build a perfect economy, watch huge metropolitan areas come up and produce cultural works...

History is really interesting right now - two billion people in India and China fast becoming globalised, etc - in real life people have fun watching the rise of such states and commenting on what economic policies they should do to achieve an end to poverty and total literacy etc - so it would be cool for such people to act out such policies in a game.

So far the only ones that have attempted this, such as ones based on the CIA database, have been unplayable... And I had trouble with Victoria too TBH.

yes, this might be OT but I so agree with maharaja!! Something with UN, IMF, EU, petrol crisis, ... Supreme Ruler 2020 is on the road but some care on diplomacy and economy and not so much war stuff would be just great.

Yeh, exactly what interests me too.

Imagine slowly bringing together an EU from the aftermath of WW2...

Hammering out (or perhaps forcing) treaties like 'single currency', 'no passports', 'constitution', etc - the satisfaction would come from eventually seeing states across Europe (or somewhere else) suddenly turn the same colour, be re-named, have a new flag, etc.

Or imagine taking the reins of an African country that is facing several factions - religious extremists, nationalists, socialists, etc - and trying to develop it using whatever ideology you choose (or perhaps doing this from the outside by supporting a relevent faction, etc).

Im not sure how soft power like entertainment could be modelled other than as a bland statistic, but imagine trying to make your country a haven for creative industries, so that the world watches its stuff like how everyone watches Hollywood or Japanese anime...

Try the game "superpower 2" ;) its a game where you can greate organisations like the UN or EU, nukes, wars, healthcare systems... but paradox would have made a better game ;)

I think I tried the first and could hardly play it....

Also:

Apart from modern era games, it might be fun going back to the very beggining of human history too - imagine a world map reflecting earth circa 6000 BCE, where most of the land is inhabited by hunter gatherers or agricultural settlements...

...then raising a civilization like Mesopotamia, the Indus Valley, Egypt, the Minoans, the early Chinese, etc.

I also dont want the game dumbed down so it can be "easy"

The problem with ultra-complex games is they are too hard for a laymen to play. I could hardly keep track of everything in Victoria - rather than ordering every little supply I need, id like to issue a broad command, like more toward market economy, or move toward socialism.

Otherwise its just too hard to handle and not enough fun.

Take this scenario for example - in Victoria I tried to take control of a small country, and change its policies so that it would be attractive to immigrants - I wanted them to flood in from across the world, and I wanted to create a haven for free trade - a small enclave like Singapore or something. It was virtually impossible and not satisfying.

Managing larger nations was also not that satisfying because the only development indicator was literacy, and the only way to develop was building individual factories and stuff, rather than a more Sim City 'build it and they will come' type thing - i.e. put down infrastructure and industry arrives.

The problem with HOI was it was all about the war - but not the states fighting the war.

I.E. you couldnt create a thousand year reich, or socialist utopia, or united India, or colonial-free China, or resurgent Britain, or greater East Asian prosperity sphere - all you could do was engage in conflict - not attractive to someone who wants to play out a different style of game, making a single country change.

alvaro said:

Yeh, if going ultra-modern is too politically sensetive - then ultra ancient would also be damn interesting.

- Mesopotamia
- The Indus Valley Civilization
- Early China
- Ancient Egypt
- Phoenecians
- Early Greece
- Hittites
- Persia

Imagine guiding a group of primative farming provinces around a river until they are an urban civilization with millions of inhabitants, great cities, temples, road networks.

oldworld.jpg

Seeing it all on a map would be cool - the roads spreadign like a spider web with each infrastructure upgrade a province gets, the cities growing into artificial blobs on the map with thousands of new inhabitants. Guiding early religions - maybe an event for the birth of the Buddha, Confucius and Christ which allows you to adopt a new religion, and alter the demographics of your empire with state policy...

Even if it only moddelled an area between Britain and Japan, that would be cool as hell.

There is Supreme Ruler 2010.Very deep complex that takes alot of reserch to understand its depth. The AI is ok in some parts of the game but weak in battle tactics. No cross water invasion.
Supreme Ruler 2020 is being worked on now and will be put out by Paradox.Around May 2008 is the expected release of the game.
This time the game is played on a world map that has almost every country.
Improved AI with 3D graphics. The specs to play the game is well within most computors now.
It looks like its the only game in the near future that will give us the kind we are looking for.
Superpower was intresting if you used the editor to build complex scenario,s
but AI lacked long term goals to keep ahead of you.
For now modded Hearts of Iron 2 Doomsday with DAIM is about the best strategy game there is on all levels.War-economy-diplomacy.

agree. it's a problem because finetunning the game won't be that naif in a modern day game as to release a patch. if terrorism, hunger, populist revolutions,.. are in the game paradox might not get complaints for "overpowered sweden" or alike but to defend one ideology or another as better paced for the future. (I know it may sound crazy but in Spain we have the experience of a TV channel that likes to freighten people about games and the internet)
still there is no serious game about modern day and it may be a niche for political and economical simulations.

What I really love in strategy games that if often lacking, is the ability to build things a lot, without going to war - like take an ancient civilization and construct every concievable thing without spreading across a map - I like EU because you have the ability to form new countries (France, Italy, Germany, Britain, etc - although unfortunaly not speculative ones). So one thing id like to see irrespective of era next time is a ton of things to do that arnt war related - like alter demographics, change religions gradually, build infrasturcuture, etc.
