Just inherited Poland with no PU??

Fully reformed HRE (with Austria) so was much more powerful than Poland. We had an alliance, royal marriage, and very good relations (almost 200), and I just randomly received a message saying I had inherited their entire Kingdom.

Fully invested diplomatic, expansion, and religious ideas.

How did that happen?

Under a restricted subset of the conditions that produce spontaneous PUs, sometimes you get a full immediate inheritance.

This happened to me the other day. I randomly inherited a very unfriendly/outraged, and very massive, Oirat Horde.

Yea as my fledgeling brandenburg I straight inherited Bohemia, doubled my size and made the game so much easier.

It's only ever happened to me once but dam that gives you one massive boost. I'd like to know the exact conditions that trigger it.

I think the inheritance rules are one of those 'black box' things we'll never really know for sure.

I do know that in hundreds of hours of EUIII & IV I've never had any luck with random inheritances. I think one time I randomly inherited a two province German minor or something worthless like that, but my only other inheritance/unions have been via claim throne/force war.

As GB i inherited Portugal twice with out a PU (vs 1.3.2) In other game versions i never see a inheritance with out PU's.
Sems those "black box" changed a littet in 1.3.2...

I think the inheritance rules are one of those 'black box' things we'll never really know for sure.

I'm pretty sure it's the same calculation as regular inheritance, which is odd because if you don't inherit but go to PU, then you need a PU for 50 years before you can inherit again.

I've noticed that AI sometimes spontaneously inherits small countries like Saxe-Lauenburg.

AI Poland often loses PU over Lithuania and fails to incorporate Mazovia so it's not that big for an inheritance.

I had it happen only twice so far. I inherited Cologne once as Burgundy (and this time literally just a few days after royal marriage) and Bosnia as Ethiopia. I *thought* one condition is that you had to be much, much larger compared to the country to be inherited, but Lakedaimon inherited Bohemia as Brandenburg? How large was your "fledgling Brandenburg" in comparison to Bohemia? I thought you'd never be able to inherit an even-size nation but well, now I guess it can happen if that doubled his empire...

I'd always assumed it was the same mechanics as a random PU, pretty much with a small percent chance of getting a straight inheritance instead of the PU.

I've only had it happen once - as Austria I inherited the Palatinate. It was nice because I got the electorship.

I PUed Muscovy as Brandenburg relatively early before I had even integrated Pomerania probably at 5 or 6 provinces. It had been saying my dynasty would rise there but then after a few more months it turned into a PU and I got it.

In the diplomacy screen, if you mouse over the ruler of a nation, it pops up a tooltip that says what will happen if that ruler were to die. This is periodically updated and, since some results are random, not always accurate but it is usually fairly close. So, for example, in a case where it says you get a PU you will sometimes inherit instead (and vice versa), if you are supposed to get a ruler of your dynasty you might get a PU (or inherit) instead, and so on.

I've randomly inherited Lithuania as Sweden once.

Really annoying and inconvenient. I slowly gave it away to vassal I created just to I didn't get rebellions to religious and cultural differences.

Earlier this evening in the same game I actually got a message saying Scotland's heir is of my dynasty. Fingers crossed for a PU or, even better, an all out inheritance!
