Peace on earth and good will toward men will increase odds of a comet by 500% in paradox land.
And events in EU4 are unlocked when you choose new idea groups. Events with choices that result in slider moves are no less "disconnected" than events that give or take MP. What you are asking for is for Paradox to spend time crafting more variations on a -1 stab event instead of things that actually would improve the game, such as the new Native American and Colonial systems, or a better internal management or dynastic system, (your mileage may vary on those). And in a way they already have, because again: Idea Group events.Yes, I want results to stem from causes, not mere randomness, because in real life stability hits didn't just "happen."
Take comets for instance. People took them as harbingers of war, famine and the end of dynasties. But, if such a "star" appeared during a time of peace, stability, plenty and dynastic stability, such a "sign of doom" is not going to get much credence among the people!
When famine, pestilence and war ravage the lands and the living begin to envy the dead then people look for signs in the heavens.
And all the real life events that caused stability hits are easily modeled and appropriate triggers installed. For instance reaching a certain level of diplotech.
If you played EUIII you already saw these "random" events were the essence of the slider system. "Narrow-minded" versus "Free thinking", or "Free Trade versus Mercantilism" were choices that led to results.
In this game, because people didn't understand the sliders they were eliminated and you just tech up blindly. And events just "happen" without apparent cause.
That's not an improvement.
Pretty sure the bi-yearly events occur twice a year, not once every 2 years.
There's a mod that disables comets (see my signature).
I highly recommend it,![]()
Without comets, some other mechanism would be needed to balance the game:
1) No state ever has been stable for several generations. Most often - not even for 20 years.
2) Any LONG game has to have periods of ups and periods of downs. A skilled player can set up such foreign policy that no foreign threat will come. But history shows well that NONE such situations have been perpetual into eternity. So, domestic threats it is.
3) People are irrational. Especially pre-scientific revolution. And the sky unspoiled by artificial lights? Yea, thats the playground of gods, spirits, forces of the universe. A red unusual light (aurora borealis, comets, Venus, Mars) in sky could for example signal a war soon to happen. Who'd be merry seeing it?
There's more comets in space than there's grains of sand on all of the Earth's beaches.

Yeah, but locally? And how many can be seen from one and only one country?
I think Paradox should stop forcing players to waste their money on rebels in an enemy's country, and finally allow us to fund astronomers!
Processed the event files. Looks like it's not just comets: high stability makes a lot of negative events more likely, especially for republics:

For as we all know, Sweden is known for its frequent civil unrest, terrorist attacks, and public shootings compared to Somalia.
Maybe someone should tell those peasants that it's called "The Moon."
Talking seriously now, "bad card draw" events are apparantly in for balance with Multiplayer games.
Bottoming out stability has non-event game mechanics supporting it (tax loss, revolt risk + rebels, etc.).
Equally applicable to SP and MP IMO
When did I say that having negative stability wasn't a bad thing? All I'm saying is that making events which cause stability hits happen *more* at high stability, and not at all at low stability makes no sense. The events are identical either way, it's not a case of how a shooting in Auckland would be a bigger deal than a shooting in Yemen, it's a case of the same event happenign more commonly at high stability.
That's true, but this is an artificial way of "balancing" the game. It's only recently been posted (as far is as known) that the intention is in aim for Multiplayer gameplay, where balance becomes more important, as two players cannot be Castille at the same time, and wherein each player is experienced enough with the game so as to be able to exploit the AI players.

When a nation is generally peaceful, riots, assassinations, murders etc impact on happiness more than where its in civil war and such things are par for the course.
As for comets, well, I guess Paradox could delete the higher stab increases, but to be honest I feel at least half of the current hysteria is inherited from EU3 ('waa I hate bad events, lets point at the comet, everybody does that!').
