so just before I go into this I want to say how cool the game is overall but im just having an issue I cant get around.

67CAB6DDF4458D5D834A5A9E5C2BBE93E9C705F5

for some reason the traffic wants to jump across the other 2 lanes to get into the inner lane from the on ramp as seen above, I know its something to do with choosing lanes for exit ramps further up the highway but its miles away and can't really be changed. I have tried moving off ramps ect like removing the one right at the bottom of the image but still vehicles try to cram into the inner lane :/.

Need to find out where everyone is going in that left lane. Moving the off-ramps here will not help as they are empty or not being used anyways (at least in this pic). To solve this issue, you need to go to where your traffic problem starts... Could you post a pic as to what is causing all this traffic.

A 'perfect' pathfinding AI would be too computationally intensive. A few suggestions have been made and it may improve, however as of right now, you have to look at the idiosyncracies of the pathfinder and try to solve it by changing your road layout.

I had an instance of a highway entrance where cars stubbornly piled up in the rightmost lane. The solution was not to change thahge the highway entrance, but looking at where the traffic was going afterwards, inside the city. I had an all-turns right situation.

I changed the main avenue entry layout to make cars go forward, right and left into the city, and it improved matters greatly.

Only after this change I also modified the transitions from the highway to the main avenue to make cars use both the right and left lane to get into the city.

It worked wonders.

If you look at wonky traffic, don't assume 'bugs' outright. Think about your road layout, and always look forward from where you see the problem.

While I think that traffic AI may be improved without requiring a supercomputer, It's leagues ahead of SC2013 already.

Best luck mayor.

ok so as ppl are interested this is where they are heading and the majority of the inner lane filter to the outside lanes to get off onto these 2 offramps

I managed to better the flow of the previous junction using a 2+1 into 3

but this has just forced the congestion of the same issue onto inner city traffic further back

I know the argument on this last image would be they are not trying to get off the 2nd offramp but they still choose to ignore the middle lane and flow into the outer of the 2 lane but insist on sticking in the inner lane of the 2 lane section.

Your last post shows the need of being able to build 1-6 lanes of any kind of roads. And it also shows we need more feedback on how traffic behaves.

its hard to tell from the pics but it looks like you don't have enough exits, they only have 1-2 choices of where to go and are all forced into the same traffic mayhem.

I mean just in that bottom pic alone says enough for me... they are too spread out, ramps and space taken up far too big, you need more of them. Those 2 lane highways are probably causing merging problems too.

Actually in your very first pic I see the problem. You have an avenue bridge going over it but only an on ramp for one side. I image a buttload of them are getting on the highway there hoping to do a u-turn asap.... simplez

ok so after some experimentation I found that Florida style turnpikes really help the issue of removing the cars desire to filter into the middle lane altogether. it has created some traffic further up again where there are no turnpikes but i will try replacing some junctions to have more turnpikes further up. i would however find this impossible without the Some roads mod which adds 2 lane highways. if i did this with normal 2 lanes the cars would priorities the turnpike for the speed so thank you some roads mod.
