I'm new to CKII but feel I have a reasonably good grasp of the basic game mechanics having had a couple of practice starts and a good read of the forum and guides.

So I'm playing Sweden and have reached 1131, I've been steadily chipping away conquering the pagans and have also become king of Finland.

Next step I send 3000 men off to the crusade thinking to win a little prestige and glory but after getting my arse kicked I retreated what was left of my troops back onto their fleet and back home thinking that would be the end of it.

Well, next thing I know I'm awarded the Kingdom of Jerusalem and my demesne has suddenly expanded to 42!

So the question is guys what do you suggest I do with all these holdings, award a few to every vassal, or hand the kingdom to a son maybe, or make a few Dukes instead?

HELP!

Unless you do a pretty serious job of defending it, Jerusalem will probably be reconquered in a few decades. So if you give it away expect that it'll get destroyed.

You could give it to the Papacy or a Holy Order. Personally I'd move my capital down there and try to defend it because it's more interesting than screwing around with Norway for the next hundred years.

It reminds me of one of my first CK2 game as England, I basically gave up the crown of england during a succession and keeped Jerusalem and conquered the levant, then things got weird as my antipope destroyed Catholic authority and europe (and my realm) descended into heresy. the game ended with my ruler being Greek, orthodox and being part of the byzantine empire to survive.

Getting Jerusalem as reward brings you an interesting choice :
1. Try to keep both you kingdom + jerusalem, but it's doomed to failure as your vassals in the levant will revolt, and the muslims or byz will take what's left.
2. Keep your kingdom and give away Jerusalem (poor chances of survival for the AI if the muslim are still going strong but sometimes you can see interesting results),
3. Give up your kingdom as I did, and try to survive alone in the levant.

If they exist then give it to a holy order as they can summon forth large armies to defend it when everyone else will be able to raise right around 0 men in the area, if not then give it to the pope. Either way expect to see it get destroyed.

You could also keep both until the culture and religion penalties wear off, and then give away Sweden/Jerusalem. That way Jerusalem still has a fighting chance.

HELP!

There are many solutions to this, some people don't want to deal with it and suggest you grant the title to the Papacy. You can also simply give the kingdom to a vassal - grant it to your heir, for example, and he'll divvy up/administrate the holdings beneath him - and it'll eventually come back directly under your control when you become the heir.

What I like to do is grant each County in the Jerusalem kingdom to a different person and keep the county of Jerusalem, so I'm still the center of power in my realm there. I'll usually move my capital there too for the lifetime of my current king, and until my kingdom there is powerful enough to defend itself. Your home realm is probably powerful enough to support and defend itself, whereas you have -zero- local military presence in Jerusalem for at least 5 years, and in practice usually your military is basically zilch for 12-15 years, and very weak for close to 30. Moving your capital there lets you instantly mercenaries and start your retinues in Jerusalem to deal with threats you would normally deal with using your levies. Otherwise you have to pack everyone in boats and take months to sail down there.

As for who to make the lords of each province, follow whatever system you use for determining whether your counties will be run by Lord Mayors, Prince-Bishops, or Counts. There are advantages and disadvantages to each (that are basically irrelevant for decades til the conquered penalties wear off). But the reason you probably want to keep the individual vassals weak there is because once the penalties fall off, if you have like 1-2 vassals running all of the kingdom of Jerusalem, it'll be very easy for them to tell you to go stuff it when the core of your power is in Sweden. If they're small, petty county lords, it gives you time to add to your holdings and create a larger base of power there. With 1-2 vassals controlling most/all of it, it's also easy for them to be Stupid Disinterested AI if the Muslims come to take you back over, watching impassively and barely defending themselves while the Muslims conquer them, whereas if they're all Counts directly beneath you, you will have more direct control over your military there.

In a recent game with an otherwise very insular Wales (I was just Wales, I wasn't trying to fabricate claims or anything, I was just chilling in Wales trying to breed as many positive genetic traits into the line as possible) I was granted Jerusalem twice. the first time I really didn't want to have to deal with it, it was still early in the game and Wales still needed a lot of work to get into a decent state. So I gave Jerusalem to an uncle (or something) and just let him go off and fail to hold the Kingdom. He actually didn't do all that bad a job. By the time he'd lost it he had converted the entire kingdom to Catholicism and a few of the regions had even become ethnically Welsh. Then he came back to my court, died, and bequeathed me a lot of money. So that worked out well.

Then I was granted Jerusalem after the second crusade too. This time I had a pretty rich realm with a decent standing army (for a 6-region nation) and my Queen was young, had fantastic stats and an heir that was also a genius. I figured I could make a go of holding it. Most of Jerusalem was still Catholic and two of the regions were still Welsh so I actually had some chance of holding on, at least for a while. But I didn't move my capital to Jerusalem, so every time I had a Holy War declared on me I had to spend more than a month shipping my armies to the war zone.

It was going so very well until the Ilkhanate turned up and steamrollered everything that wasn't Byzantine. I still have the title "King of Jerusalem" so I'll get given it if any Crusades are successful, but I doubt they will as the Ilkhanate in that game are an absolute tank and can field more than 300,000 men. More than the combined armies of the HRE and ERE (which are allied, that's the only reason the Ilkhanate haven't crushed the ERE yet).

Jerusalem is a fun sideshow to occupy the mind while waiting for tech and buildings in your home kingdom.

I usually just give it to the pope, It can really start becoming a headache as time progresses, especially if the Fatimid blob is still around :glare:

I just took it in my Karling game a few years after becoming King of France and decided that I couldn't be bothered with the constant stream of Capetian pretenders so I created Aquitane and gave up the French Kingdoms to my younger sons and took my heir off to be actual crusader kings. It's a lot more fun though vassalising at least one Holy Order really helps out in the first few years. Egypt and Persia are both shattered and the Byzantines are fairly strong so I've been lucky so far.

Give them to the church like a good little Catholic Crusader King XD

Know why you shouldn't give it to the Pope? Because the Pope is a huge a-hole. Even if he has 10 positive traits and they're all called "Not a Huge A-Hole to the Player Character" all of those traits are FAKE. The Papacy is a jerk. I'd rather give the damn thing back to Islam.
