Many countries use a greater and lesser coat of arms, England, Denmark and Sweden for example.
For those who want to use the greater coa in the game, shield sets like this can be used. :)
(The greater arms doesn't look that good as a small shield)

Don't be sorry cuz it seems that it's you that doesn't know anything. When it comes to European heraldry I think I know a bit more that you... :)

Look here for example of greater and lesser arms

how come the english flag doesn't look like the shield? ahhh i can't remember all these different combinations of big shield, small shield, flag!

Eeh, it's because England use a coat of arms AND a flag. However in the 15th century it was common to use a banner of arms (a flag depicting the coa).

I know, I realize all that (and you're right, I prolly know very little about heraldry and all that stuff)

But in terms of gameplay, it might be very hard for a person who doesn't know anything about coats of arms or different flags to figure out that this:
SWE.gif
and this:
SWE_LESSER.gif
actually is the same country!

Not to mention that the flag
flag_swe.gif
looks nothing like either coat of arms.

I mean, it's all historical and that's good, it's just that a person not too well versed in European history could get really confused... (ie I keep sending my English merchants to this CoT, but I never see St. George's cross in the CoT, and I can never beat this guy with three yellow lions as his shield... I can't even find this guy on the map!)

^- this guy not realizing that three yellow lions IS england, which also uses St. Georges cross as its flag

You don't need to know much about coa to understand that. I've never heard of anyone being comfused because the shields and flags are different

Well that's why I wrote, the ones who uses the greater arms could use this set. :)
If you want a flag with the three lions on it I could make it for you.
