This is correct, no custom avatars. We have over 760000 members and we'd spend more time policing avatars and actual work if we had them "free for all". This is also why we have over 200 different avatars depending on what games you own (BT will get its own as well).
We use the same basic styling across the whole forum with a rotating banner at the top highlighting important stories. So whilst the theme may not be BATTLETECH specific, it will get it's time to shine across the top soon enough.
