I'm a relative new comer to 'Darkest Hour', and while I'm enjoying the game immensely thus far, there are a few things I feel would give 'DH' a fresher feel. I drifted to 'DH' from 'Arsenal of Democracy', and I feel that 'DH' could benefit from adapting a few of the 'AOD' ideas.
1. I, for one, would like to see updated pics for as many army commanders & politicians as possible. Honestly, looking at the same old pics is beginning to feel a bit stale.
2. The 'Victory or Valhalla' option. There are many occasions when it would be very beneficial to have my armies hold for as long as possible, even if it means my divisions, armies, etc., suffer enormous casualties, or perish altogether.
3. Super Heavy Railway Artillery. If you want to smash fortifications or pound a city into oblivion, heavy artillery is the way to go.
4. A 'compare losses' chart. I'm not sure why, but I always found it satisfying to see what kind of damage I was doing to my enemies
Other suggestions I have, are;
1. The introduction of a proper system of chain of command. For example; A General or Field Marshal to command an army group, a general to command the army, a Lt. General to command a corps, and a major general to command a division, and so on & so forth.This was one of very few things about 'Hearts of Iron 3' that I actually liked.
2. Brigades that can operate quite independently of a division. It would be a fascinating addition to 'DH' to be able to construct Infantry, armour, cavalry, paratroop, mountain troop, or heavy artillery brigades that can be used in a similar way to a regular, full sized, division. The brigade could be commanded by a general, or by a brigadier or colonel from a newly created 'junior commissioned officer' pool. Now, I know I may be getting well ahead of myself here, but I see no reason why an officer who hasn't yet been promoted to major general couldn't be placed in said 'junior officers pool' and then used to command a brigade at the players discretion. I think this would be a wonderful addition to 'DH'.
3. Finally (and this is where 'chain of command' and 'junior officers pool' all ties in), I'd like to see the addition of a folder where the performances of the officers commanding my troops is monitored and appraised. For example, if the commander of an army was disatisfied with the performance of a particular corps or divisional commander (and of course, the commander of an army would be answerable to the group commander, who could also recommend his promotion/demotion), he could recommend to your army chief or chief of staff that said corps/divisional commander be replaced. The same could apply to a commander who had performed particularly well, and thereupon, could be promoted without any loss of skill or experience. This could be extremely interesting when dealing with junior officers -brigadiers, colonels, etc- in command of brigades. Perhaps the more junior officers could be promoted to major general well before they were historically. Anyways... just a suggestion
I'll probably think of other stuff throughout the day, too
