For me, part of the problem with traffic is situations like this;

junction.jpg

The highlighted Sedan has decided to drive on to the tram crossing despite its exit not being clear (well it is really but the sedan wont move until the car to the south has moved). This has the effect of holding my trams up on a route where they would otherwise be free to bypass the traffic as the tracks are in the middle of the avenue. And since the road is gridlocked, they get held up for quite some time.

Plus my own tram has decided to make matters worse by driving halfway into the road and stopping.

Common sense, and probably most traffic laws, would dictate that vehicles shouldn't enter a crossing unless their exit is clear. The game appears to follow such rules for simple road only junctions, so I am wondering if it would be possible in a future patch to have traffic treat tram crossings in the same manner?

I agree, I mostly am okay with the traffic except for stuff like this. Even if the cars knew how to change lanes, he could move over into the open lane. Alot of traffic is a good and fun challenge but not when one dude holds up all the lines haha.

Maybe a patch like you said for an AI driver fix?

I love the game though, this just bothers me and there is really nothing you can do to work around this

Tram 1: Dude, theres like a free lane open.
Sedan: Nope I like this lane better.
Tram 2: But if you move into the lane you can change back, just please let us move.
Sedan: Nope, its not fair you can move forward while I get stuck.
Tram 1 : Dude hes not budging.
Tram 2: So whats the prison time for murder?

To be continued.........

kaleckton, you just made my day :).

This might just be the reason for the amount of gridlocks, as they seem to start when you start running buses or trams on certain roads. As stated earlier. I like the amount of traffic. But the traffic locking up is just horrible.

A similar thing happens with buses at two-lane roundabouts by the way. My bus decides to use the left lane. It enters a roundabout and wants to exit - but can't, because the left lane at the roundabout is blocked due to traffic. Common sense would dictate, that the bus changes the lane because the right lane is empty and it could exit the roundabout with ease (especially since it's the next exit it has to take).

(Another nifty thing would be waypoints by the way :) )

Yeah this is just a PITA. This happens a lot when a tram line intersects a double road (with grass median). Apparently the game already prevents car from stopping at intersections, maybe they should also be prevented from stopping on tram tracks?

I've restarted the campaign yet again, been trying different things each time. Tho this time I ran into a serious problem. See the image below.

At the centre of the image, my tram is trying to make a left turn and I believe the sedan next to it is also making a left turn. This caused complete grid lock as nothing will move after this happens.

I had the exact same situation on Vienna once. If you wait long enough one of the vehicles will timeout and disappear, only to be soon replaced by another that does the same thing. Another approach is to momentarily send that particular tram back to the vehicle depot. However, you'll have to keep an eye on that intersection throughout the game.

This is something that happens thousands of times in every major city on every major intersection.

Do you mean in CiM, or in real life? :p

Probably both!

For example: this.

Vehicles seem to be bright enough to reserve the space they're about to drive into (whether that's road, metro platform, tram track etc) and other vehicles will wait for that space to become clear before they try to drive in. The problem is that cars are happy to wait on tram tracks. In real life, I'm pretty sure this is illegal! In the screenshot above, the car is waiting for space on the other side of the junction. The car should be bright enough to know not to wait on the tram tracks!

It gets even better when you try to have a tram line end outside of the road. When you make a loop the incoming and outgoing trams can "trap" cars between them resulting in month-long gridlock. In berlin I had to resort to having trams completely outside of the road network and use buses to shuttle people to the tram stations.

Indeed stopping on tram tracks is illegal in most countries. It often results in a very very swift punishment of having your car totaled by an incoming tram :)

If you want to see another example of real life gridlocks, just take a look at this one.
This picture was taken a few weeks ago in Tel-Aviv, the traffic lights malfunctioned and everyone wanted to cross the intersection:
untitled_wa.jpg

This blocked intersection affected the whole city, there were traffic jams for hours, the police came to direct traffic in a few minutes, but the damage was done.
Sometimes human drivers can be as stupid as computer bots.;)

Haha, that's quite funny actually. Well, it would be less funny if I didn't live a thousand miles away from that jam :)

Phillipe, what size was the loop? If it's the smallest possible size (a tiny circle over 4 grid squares), I don't see how more than one tram can fit on the loop at a time!

In germany we have mostly street signs under the traffic lights, so that they rule the traffic in the night, when the traffic lights are disabled. That works very good ^^

That is also the case in Israel, if you will look closely, you can see a stop sign under one of the traffic lights.
The problem is that most driver prefer to "forget" that when the traffic light are not working.
