In this case realism would wouldn't easily show off that the jump point is used as a transit rally point if everything was at "realistic" distances. It's also part of the reason space combat is always shows at knife fight ranges. Otherwise, a couple flashes of light and shows over there.

Haang on the picture of the Argo looks like it has three docking collars. One attached to the jump ship, one attached to the Leopard Dropship and one free. Or is that just me?

The Argo has one main docking collar for attaching to a jumpship and two auxiliary docking collars for dropships to allow transfer of mechs and cargo.

It's just that the way it attaches to a jumpship means it has to take up two docking collars to be carried in jump I believe.

So it could effectively carry two Leopards as auxiliary craft in a jump.

The old, now obsolete BattleSpace rules and the Quirk rules are easily misunderstood due to wording issues.

"Large DropShips" don't technically need two docking hardpoints; they're just so big that the GM may rule that they make an adjacent hardpoint unusable by physically blocking it.
You should still be able to transport a "Large DropShip" on a JumpShip with only 1 hardpoint. And, at GM discretion, the quirk doesn't neccessarily apply in all cases.

One thing about the Argo being able to attach other dropships: might it mean that the other dropships aren't attached during a jump, but in the long period between jump and planetfall? Am I just late to the party and everyone else already got that?

The devs have said they dropped the idea of having the Leopards docked to the Argo during a jump because they found other ways to accomplish what they wanted in the game and therefore went with the more canon-friendly option. I imagine it's like you say where the Leopards are docked during transit.

I'm not sure if this is a thing in canon, but honestly it makes perfect sense. If the same unit has multiple dropships, docking them together en route to the planet allows them to move gear and personnel. It also means you could probably get away with smaller 'service' areas for the crew of the smaller dropships. They use the shared medbay, rec hall, training sims on the mothership for the 90% of the time they aren't jumping or landing.
