I was playing battletech this morning watching my Argo plod it's way across a small corner of the galaxy and when it docked with a jumpship I thought to myself...wouldn't it be cool if there was stuff to do on the jump ship. Maybe depending on the ship...there might be merchants with unique trades...or maybe even bonus missions on planets unlocked by conversations with other people on board. Other special events could occur as well...maybe the jumpship malfunctions...and we find hidden planetoid or we find an old station to go to for repairs...things like this would just added more variety and flavor.. instead of grinding through missions it would feel like a story that's more unique each time through. Do you guys have any ideas on other cool events we could encounter when docking with a dropship.

*fuzzy memory* I thought the Jumpship people were extremely closeted/keep to themselves/nigh xenophobic and don't really 'socialize' with other except in the performance of duties. Then again that could just be from a BT novel read back in the 90s and it was thematic to just that book.

Any lore gurus out there that can weigh in on this?

That I can't verify, as to their xenophobia, but like ships at sea or truckers on the highway grid, they very likely network, given the untold thousands of military, corporate and civilian jumpships that would have to maintain manned space in a volume as huge as Battletech descibes.

They would at least have a subculture, but I'd also like to know what's considered a standard tour of duty. Even veteran crew would eventually go batty without shore leave.
