So in short it is better to use on the Assault mechs and your playstyle. No surrender no retreat i mean why need JJ to retreat then? Use it to jump behind enemies to perform strikes? I am no ninja. But can see the need yesterday when tried on a 3 skull mission and ended up with commander and one other pilot in sick bay for 94 days. Back to 2,5 now until can get my hands on a second heavy. Thank you will try out.

Jump jets let you move in any direction, land with any facing, and navigate any terrain, and they give you high evasion as a bonus. Sure, you might need to drop a weapon or a bit of armor to mount them, but shooting from the side or back makes up for the loss of the weapon, and shooting from cover with high evasion makes up for the lower armor.

...In my current play through, I have an Urbanmech. The JJs are the ONLY way to gain evasion without sprinting with green MechWarrior. If I move I get nothing, but if I jump, I at least generate two chevron.

Also, if it is a mission like Ambush Convoy, there are some instances where jumping covers a lot of ground and still allow you to shoot the convoy in pursuit...
UrbanMechs?
On Convoy Ambush Missions?

Two separate occurrences :). I was talking about my Urbie experiences, and also just a different mech trying to chase a vehicle down and still being able to shoot.

I put JJs on everything. Only exception might be LRM-boats, but even those get at least 2 normally, just in case I want to go up/down a cliff or something.

The added mobility is - in my opinion - well worth the little loss in firepower. Sometimes I just use them to jump one of my Mechs in front of the enemy and brace, so they have something to shoot at (and miss alot, because of defense gyro and evasion) while my other Mechs move in for the kill.
And eventually, the tonnage for JJs might not even result in less damage dealt, because you can position much better, might get shots you normally wouldn't. But at least with my playstyle, which favors armor and mobility over firepower, they are definitively reducing the damage I take.

I wanted to play a "JJs just if they are stock"-campaign, but I really couldn't. I missed them. Badly. I really like HBS allows me to put them on every mech, because there would be Mechs I just would never use otherwise.

When all tools can do all jobs...

Ah!

I love me some Urbiness. : )
The challenge inherent in BattleTech’s Urbie’s 2/3/2 Movement Profile is a big part of what endears the Urbie to me. The more that is reflected in BATTLETECH, the more “Urbie” a BATTLETECH UrbanMech is to me.

Chasing down Convoys? Can it be done by BATTLETECH’s UrbanMech?

Given 4 Jump Jets, I have no doubt it can be done. But it eats into the Urbiness of BATTLETECH’s UrbanMech for me.

Nobody has really talked about the advantages of a "fighting retreat" yet, it seems.

Backing up will tend to get the AI chasing you, and depending on the terrain the rear units can have some trouble following. So it can lead to a nice spread-out force that can easily be picked apart one at a time. Jump jets allow you to back up and still be facing forward while covering much more distance than any possible retreat-and-turn-around you can get on the ground. Though admittedly, I usually only back up when I accidentally got in the thick of it, with reinforcements that show up before I've finished off the main force or similar situations. Regardless, I hate to give up shots while backing up and jump jets allow me to keep firing.

It's particularly useful when you're fighting mechs that are significantly slower than yours. Taking down assaults with lights or mediums is entirely possible, but I wouldn't want to try it without jump jets. Much higher risk of misreading the terrain and getting stuck in range.

Plus all the advantages previously mentioned.

I took one on a Target Acquisition mission precisely because of this, I had five mechs total and one was in the repair bay.

It actually worked out, in that I beat the mission and didn’t lose anyone. The Urbanmech itself basically sprinted towards the evac and then I used my JJ to continue moving towards it while sniping at range with the ac/10. At least it knocked off some evasion chevrons.

I played a JJs on stock mechs only campaign with some mods for funsies and then realized I was running a force mostly composed of Highlanders, Grasshoppers, and Dervishes with a Catapult or two in the mix.

Speed 3 assaults are just so sluggish in cover I can’t bear to run them without Jump Jets.

This is my biggest problem with going sans jumpjet. Speed 4 mechs are quite usable without them, but speed 3 just doesn’t move enough to keep up with the action.

I have tried to use JJs less, which has paid off in payload for my mechs. I still really like them for my light mechs to get out of trouble and for my slow mechs to position well.

When debating whether to install/keep Jump Jets or remove them, one could always ask themselves...What would Van Halen do?..

Might as well jump!
