- JOUST RULES -

If you wish to host a tournament in your realm, you will need to fill out this application and hand it to Lord Paul Rebelodicus the Master Herald via PM. Tourneys are rare, and it is purely the Master Herald's discretion when and where they are held. A keen wish to really get stuck in and roleplay heavily as host is a must if you want one in your realm.

Lord Master Herald

The Lord Master Herald is a moderator tool in the joust tourney and is neutral. In very exceptional circumstances, he is able to exercise powers of arrest on any character at the tourney as if the joust venue thread were his own court thread. He announces winners and answers queries on chivalry. He has the power to expel any contenders under the code of chivalry.

Tourney Duration

Venue posts must be delivered by the host to Master Herald well before this time!

The tents go up. Joust venue-thread posted by Master Herald

Throwing Down the Gauntlet
Next, applications are made by the competitors to be accepted into the Lists. Where a competitor wishes to issue one to a specific foe, a challenge is issued. The challenger's foe must submit his acceptance of the challenge to the Master Herald. Both the challenger and his challenged foe must state whether they intend to yield at the point of death. Competitors who do not issue a challenge will be paired off by the Master Herald with another suitable opponent.

A tourney event will be held approximately every two days, real time. When all the different contests have been resolved, the tourney ends.

At the end of the tourney, a feast is thrown. Roleplayed posts are expected by all players attending the tourney to finish the event in style.

Champions

After his first winning tourney, a champion will have a
+1 modifier in his favour on rolls made on the Points System table, below, in the next. This can be gained cumulatively as he wins up to +3.

If a named champion goes to, and wins, three tournaments, they will be considered a legendary champion and will confer a +1 to morale bonus upon an army when fighting at the head of it in the stead of it's HoS. Although note: an army may only have one leader present at any one battle.

Champion of Renown: +1
Champion of Exception: +2
Legendary Champion: +3 (+1 morale in battles as HoS)

Queen of Love and Beauty
For a later date, when you're well practiced.

Contending nations may put forward a maiden to attend the Joust. Before the 'main' event of the Joust, knights may choose to 'tip', wearing a lady's favour (a scarf tied to arm or lance, etc.) to win her the golden crown of the Queen of Love and Beauty. The QoLaB then sits in pride of place with the host throughout the proceedings and eventually gives the laurel wreath of victory and the prize to the ultimate champion of the tourney.

'Tipping'
At the beginning of the tourney, rings are placed on stakes along the 'lists'; the long arena used for the main joust. The knights have a chance to demonstrate their prowess before the main event by charging down the lists, trying to pierce as many of the target rings with their lances as possible. The knight with the highest total 'lanced', wins.

Unhorsing and Injury
If a knight is unhorsed during the main joust, there is also a
1 in 4 chance of injury and a corresponding dice-roll made on the Broken Body Table.

His opponent may claim his horse by the following day and no later.

Broken Body Table (BBT)
Modifiers apply to future rolls on the Points System table.

1. (RP effect only) No effect other than a broken nose.

2. (RP effect only) No effect other than a visible scar and a limp.

3. -2. Broken fingers on left hand.

4. -3. Broken fingers on right hand.

5. -4. Broken ribs.

6. -5. Bloody gouge to body.

7. -6. Multiple concussion and
blackened/swollen eyes. Has to be pried from armour.

8. -7. Broken rib, broken fingers on right hand and multiple concussion. Has to be pried from armour.

9. Severely injured. Permanent compound injury. Out of current tourney. (-1 to all rolls in future jousts when healed).

10. DEATH. Broken neck and back.

Rolls on this table are cumulative.

Losing Consciousness
If the modifier of the BBT causes the result of a roll on the Points System table to drop to 1 or 2, it is considered that the Knight passes out from his injuries.

It is also assumed that a knight has no more than two mounts. If they are lost or forfeit another must be borrowed from another contender (which must be roleplayed) or bought for the princely sum of 1 econ point. You must post notice of the purchase of a new mount to the Master Herald
and in the Nat Stats thread.

Combat Afoot
In the event of a personal challenge, there will be three passes of the lance, where only the first pass is relevant to the Tourney's scoring. If, at the end of this, both parties are capable of continuing combat they shall step from their horses to fight afoot until one or the other has yeilded or is dead.

All penalty modifiers are are inflicted on the opponent. They are cumulative and include those already picked up from the BBT (see above). Prior to the start of a challenge both combatants will state whether they will yeild when near death.

Rolls are made for both combatants simultaneously. This continues until one of the combatants can no longer fight.

Afoot Combat Table (Used during challenges only)

0 or less. No strike achieved; tiredness and injury deprive combatant of the ability to retaliate well. Opponent gets +1 and then +2 to his roll next round for each increment below zero.

1. Critical miss! A comical yet demeaning display. The combatant falls flat on his face to the crowd's delight.

2. Critical miss! In trying to manoeuvre afoot, the combatant shows poor martial skills by stumbling about and nearly tripping.

3. No effect. Good show of the martial art.

4. Exceptional defence. The remarkable hand weapon mastership displayed here deflects all attacks this round.

5. -1. Fracture to opponent's cranial region.

6. -2. Blow to opponent's abdomen.

7. -3. Blow to opponent's shield arm. Shield arm is deadened and useless for the next round.

8. -4. Blow to opponent's upper leg. Strained and bruised muscles slow him.

9. -5. Blow to opponent's knee. Knee dislocated. Static combat.

10. Knock-out Blow to opponent's head.

11. Knock-out, with damage, to opponent. Opponent suffers permanent compound injury and is out of current tourney. (-1 to all rolls in future jousts when healed).

12. DEATH. Broken neck and back. OR: YIELD. Opponent can take no more and asks for quarter.
