I'm playing my first game with CK2 Plus installed (and very pleased with it so far), but I have a question about the new factions (Glory, Prosperity, etc). Why would I want to join one of these factions in the court of my liege? I can only think of a couple of reasons: because I want to be appointed to a council position, and joining one of the factions would increase my chances, or because it looks like a faction is heading for revolt and I want to be part of it. Are there any other benefits, either for joining one of these factions or starting one?

Those factions aren't just for revolts -- they can also make other demands of the liege which could benefit you. Ideally you'd want to lead such a faction so you could determine what those demands are, but if you've no interest in advancing your position you certainly don't have to join any of the factions. The AI certainly will, however.

These factions can also improve (or reduce) your relations with your liege - I remember quite a few events about how vassal X spoke in my favor/against me in the faction meeting that increased/decreased my prestige and increased/decreased my opinion of him.
