In In Nomine at least, it's thoroughly possible to join and become Emperor as Orthodox. I know this since I've done it. In HttT I've no idea

vassalize enough electors to become emperor yourself, then spread the empire to your provinces that way. it's the only way i found to get provinces into the empire since the current emperor always refuses even at +200 relations and an alliance.

you can also annex then convert provinces, then relase as vassals

It's been renamed to "Infamy" in HTTT, and it's on the top of the screen by your Legitimacy.

You have Heir, where the term Infamy is used instead, but is otherwise equivalent.

If the new nation ase big and strong than they are, they'd probably be afraid of them competing with them for rule of the empire. Escpecially with the Byzantine emperor, since he already claims the title of Ceaser!

Emperor refused me entry lots of times as Holstein

Oh man, thats cold! Leaving poor little Holstein out there to get eaten up by the big mean Scandinavians! I don't think I've seen Holstein ever survive more than a few years up there with Denmark and their Kalmar Union just waiting for the game to start so they can pounce.
