I'm trying to play with my two friends but 1 of them, when we try to join him the game will say something about "Not having the same version" but, we made sure that we were on the same version and that we had the same mods. Does him having all the DLC's and us not having them affect this? I understand that this might be a common issue with a simple answer but I couldn't find a solution for my situation.

Can you three play when no mods are involved? If so then there is a mod issue here, either you have different mods, different versions of mods, or even the mod load order can be an issue.
To test that all 3 of you enable one mod only - can you still play? then all enable another one - keep going until you find the problem mod.
