Currently there is almost no risk attached to joining a coalition: Since the AI only joins coalitions, if they think they can win, you are almost guaranteed to have superior forces. It is harder to lose the war, since there is no separate peace and even if you lose, you have few to fear, since the enemy has difficulties to accumulate meaningful warscore (since so many nations are involved) and since the enemy can't take any land, because he can't afford any more AE.
So I think something has to be done to make being coalition member more risky. Here are a few suggestion:
-Countries rivaled to any coalition member should be more likely to ally the target
-Losing the coalition war should by itself cause a massive loss of prestige and power projection
-All peace demands against coalition members should be far cheaper
-A free CB against all coalition members should be given (as soon as the coalition achieves a certain size)
-Some special very punishing (but not to useful) peace demands in coalition wars
-Being in a coalition should take a diplomatic relation slot (if it doesn't already)
