Some of my vassals have some plots going that would weaken a potential troublemaker. But I can't start the same plot, I guess because it wouldn't result in a direct inheritance back to me. Is there any way for me to join the ongoing plot, or must I wait to be invited?

You have to be invited and that only happens if you really hate the target of the plot.
