Playing as England. Asked Aragon, who has 75 trust and owes me 18 favors, to join a war against Castile, and offered them land (they are rivals). But Aragon refused, as they are 567 in debt.

Fine. I war dec Castile on my own.

1 month later, Aragon declares war on Castile; 'conquest' CB.

I think this is an AI bug. Aragon should have been willing to war dec Castile with me - they clearly have no issue war dec'ing Castile on their own.

You could say that Aragon wants even more land than I'm willing to give (though keep in mind I have 75 trust), but then 'promise land' needs to be reworked.

Unless they suddenly payed off their debts in that month, I agree that the AI should not be willing to declare on a country that they would not join their ally in. Even if not for realism reasons, at least for balance and player experience reasons. They should at least have given you that willing to join notification at the top of the screen.

I don't bother with allies, they are more of a burden than a benefit.
They don't join wars, defensive or otherwise.

And the "distant war" modifier is so often not working. I really don't get when it comes into play and why.
I just played as Hungary and Bohemia (that I bordered in the north) refused to even consider (about -70 reasons) joining a war against Ottomans (which I bordered in the south), because walking through my country was apparently way too distant. And later had Sweden join me in a war against a southern german OPM without any complaint about the distance.

Its technically not a bug but bad design.

The call ally modifiers are different. The AI on the other hand, sees no issue whatsoever with declaring their own wars while in debt, on low manpower, etc.

Of course it just drives them further into debt, but the AI doesnt care.

Best part? You cant mod the declare war action to stop the AI from declaring wars while they are in debt because its hardcoded. Yet another problem that paradox created that is not fixable by anyone else, and which they show no sign of fixing on their own.
