That was the best part. You could seize a bunch of land from a protectorate. Then it would break free for no reason. Then you could make them a protectorate again and seize more land.
The question now is whether they take up a diplo slot or not and how forcing vassalization/protectorate status works during peace deals. And of course the trade power thing and colonial wars. Well, everything about protectorates really.
I would have liked it if there was some distinction between overseas vassals and local vassals. Obviously England's relationship with Scotland will be different from their relationship with Kilwa or Bengal. But I'm still thrilled they fixed a broken mechanic
You can ask vassals to divert trade. If you own the DLC yes, but if you don't than not, does that mean that vassals are useless in the New World/Outside of Europe if you don't own DLC?
Aw, I was hoping to recreate one of my old Spain-games where I protectorate'd Africa.
It's kinda hard to think when I'd want a vassal overseas. If I diplo-annex them I'll be paying for full-cores that I'm unlikely to want, each one I have takes a relation slot, and if I try to feed them up to make taking their trade-power worth it then I'll probably have liberty-desire issues. Hoping there's been some more retooling/rebalancing of them that's yet to be announced.
It's nice to be able to ask vassals to divert trade though. I always disliked that you couldn't. Now they'll be more powerful economically...and probably more prone to bankruptcy.
Allowing vassals to divert trade is very nice. I hope you won't be able to get 100% though because playing as a vassal would be awful now. It should at least give very high LD, like +40%.
...but this is another nerf to Merchant Republics who were the only ones that could do that.
