I'm currently playing as Japan, just enacted the Meiji restoration, was hoping that my samurai units would change into modern styled infantry units with guns. Was just wondering if anyone has played as Japan and whether or not your units graphics change? Also, China seems to have gun units and they're not even civilized yet, so was wondering why this is?

This "SHOULD" really be the other way around in terms of Japan's unique unit graphics where the Japanese have rifles and a blue US/French style uniform..

OK done it now, will test it. Do you think you could post a pic or something so I can see the new Japanese sprites? :)

Thanks a lot for the reply.

It could be worth a try to move unit=1 into the Meiji Restoration event.

That could be done I guess. Just hope it doesn't crash the game when Bolt-action is researched...

but but, are needed a middle uniform, beetween the Samurai and '900 Uniform

I have no idea what the Japanese later sprite looks like. It could possibly pass off as being there as early as 1860...

The line should be deleted from the b-a tech, when he copy it somewhere else...

But then no other country would ever change sprite appearance. All countries research the same techs.

Like Gonji said, it might stop all the other countries from receiving upgraded sprites if we moved unit=1 and made it "SPECIALLY" part of the Meiji event. So I think its best just to move it within the script (tech folder) like Gonji's done just incase ctd's start to happen.
As for the Japanese uniforms, they should look like this: http://www.chakoten.dk/plancher/ruhl4/j02.jpg

I have high hopes anyway that someone in paradox will eventually release an expansion pack that fixes all the sprites, even the German and British uniforms don't look quite right because there are details (although small) which are noticeable on th European sprites that don't quite fit in for the era or styles of that period. Some uniforms I've noticed were already outdated by 1845 (British) here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:53rd_Foot_uniform.png. British units after 1845 should look like this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:King's_Regiment_(Liverpool),_1891.jpg. Its like all the European infantry have the same model, but in different colours, which shouldn't be since they were all unique.

Anyone else notice this or agree with me?

I agree that if they were going to bother with sprites they should have made each one accurate. I think it's cool that there are samurai, but it does feel weird having them so long. I personally wish there was a option for counters as well.

Would it be difficult to mod it so that when the Japanese research some military tech they are just given the same pre-1900 sprite that the Chinese and Koreans use? Maybe it could be a decision that can be activated after researching a certain tech if having it in the tech files would mess it up for other countries.

I really like the Samurai sprites personally.

I like them too, it just doesn't fit in the Meiji Era simply because back then and in reality, Samurai were deemed uncivilised by the Western Great Powers. So even if some of you like the Samurai sprites, I and many others think that it would just defeat the object and what the Meiji Era stood for, which was civilisation and modernisation of Japan as a country and culture. Having samurai around even after the Meiji period would have been seen by the west as Japan sticking to its old ways and not being open minded to a new more modern world. Japan would simply not have become the power that it was leading up to WW1 and 2 had it not been for Emperor Meiji and the restoration or arrival of Commodore Matthew C Perry.

Maybe if they had a Samurai sprite wielding a machine gun or a rifle lol then it would look pretty cool, but then again that would defeat the object of what a Samurai stood for, so there just isn't any way around it really. The only time Japan tried to incorporate traditional Samurai and Western cultures into modern warfare was through the issuing of Samurai swords to Japanese Officers and the ideals of Boshido, the Banzai charge and Kamikaze (honour in death or way of the warrior) in WW2 and look what that did. Killed more Japanese than it did the enemy.
